ATTENDING THE WOUNDED.

Never have the arranf menta for
dealing with the wounded been in bo
thoroughly satisfactory a condition ns
they are to-doy, says the Churrh Fam
ily Newspaper. During an engage
ment, and aa the troopa advance, the
wounded are Bought out as quickly as
may he possible, their wounds tem
porarily dressed, fractures temporar
ily splinted and any other "first aid"
erven that may be necessary. Each
soldier carries with, him a small "first
aid" equipment In his tunic, so that he
wny bandage himself or temporarily
arrest bleeding, or give such help to a
wounded comrade. After "first aid" Is
rendered the wounded are borne on
comfortable litters to the "dressing
.places," which aro sheltered spots a
'abort distance behind the line of bat
tle usually In the rear of the artillery.
Here they are examined by the sur
,.aii: hemorrhage Is securely arrest
ed; bullets which can be easily and
-ulrUlv removed are taken away: for
eign bodies and splinters of bone or
.shell. If loose, are removed; limbs so
(cured as to render transport to the
field hospital ensy and comfortable,
:snd anything else done which can be
done with ease and rapidity. No big
epcrntion Is done at these spots except
In the case of limbs so shattered ns to
rrnuire Immediate amputation. The
surgeons at the "dressing places" do
only what is absolutely necessary, and
tlien the wounded are made comfort
able in specially constructed ambulance
wagons and transported to the field
hospital.
