and judicious persons to serve as jur

1900.
Commonwealth vs Mrs. Jane Bntt,

brought by Ellen McCloskey. The
scene of the affair, which was a quar
rel amodg neighbors, is Cenlralia. No
witnesses were heard for the detence.
The Jury rendered a verdict of guilty.
Commonwealth vs Minnie Sassa
roan. The Jury was called into the
box, when it was discovered that F.
L. Shtiman, a leading witness, had
disobeved the subixena and was not
in attendance at court for which the
court imposed a fine of $25.00. The
case was continued till next term.
Commonwealth vs Pursel, larceny.
The defendant, a mere youth was
charged by the prosecutor, Emma
Edgar, with having entered her hus
husband's poultry house and robbed
it of four game roosters. The defend
ant denied that he was in the barn,
said that Edgar's chickens had been
trnrk and he decided to
put a stop to it. He caught the chick
ens one by one and informed Edgar
to that effect, telling him that he
could have them back if he would
settle the damaees. Several witnesses
testified to the boy's good character.
The case was given to the Jury, which
body returned nineteen minutes there
after with a verdict of guilty.
Commonwealth vs John Bosin, as
sault and battery. The principals in
this case were of a foreign nationality,
could not speak the English language
and had to be supplied with an inter
preter. They live at Centralia. John
Shencavitch, was the prosecutor and
he claimed that the defendant, above
d hit on the head with a
stone. The verdict was not guilty and
each pay half the costs.
The next case taken up was Com
monwealth against Mary Reice : on the
charge of adultry, preferred by her
husband. Mr. Flynn, attorney for the
defendant, moved to quash the indict
ment, on the ground that a man has
. no right to appear against his wife on
such a charge. The court overruled
Mr. Flynn, and the case proceeded,
resulting in a verdict of guilty.
Commonwealth vs Joseph Levitcn,
fornication. Prosecutor Joe Reice.
Tins, it will be noticed, is another one
(( those Centralia cases, which, for all
tliev amount to, could and should
nave been senled cut of court. The
trial of such petty r ise is a useless
expense tn 1 lie rn.intv. This was
another case in wi 1 1 the services of
in interpeter w.u required. The
prisoner was an ignorant Polander
and didn't even appear to know what
he was arrested for. The case was
brief and the Jury acquitted the pris
oner, placing the costs on the prosecutor.
The following Sheriff's deeds were
acknowledged in open court :
Property of A. A. Kramer in
Greenwood to J. W. Conner.
Properly of A. Irvin in Hemlock
to M. C. Wanner.
Property of A. & A. Kramer in

creek to W. A. Baucher, trust.
Property of Ruckle in Espy to B.
F. Rice.
Property of Stephen Creasy in
Mifflin to Geo. I. Creasy.
Commonwealth vs Wilbur Shultz.
In this case the said Wilbur Shultz
was charged by the prosecutor Law
son G. Shultz, of having' entered his
corn field and taking therefrom six
teen bushels of corn. Considerable
evidence was heard on both sides of
the case, and after short addresses by
the attorneys and the court, the Jury
went out, returning in about thirty
minutes with a verdict of guilty. The
sentence of the court was pay the
cost of prosecution, restore the stolen
goods, pay a fine of $50 and undergo
imprisonment in the county jail for
thirty days.

of the Court in regard to modifying
the sentence imposed upon Edward
Boone, the Court stated that the order
made on Wednesday afternoon tor a
rule returnable Monday afternoon
is vacated and the sentence re
mains as imposed without modification.
The assault and battery case of
McCle'.lan Delhi against J. W. Perry
was calk'd. It appears that an alterna
tion took place between the two men
in the store of one Mr. Kern, at Elk
Grove, at which time Pcrjy struck
McClellan sn the face. The defend
ant claimed that the act was com
mitted in self defence. The jury de
liberated on the evidence for nearly
two hours and returned a verdict of
not guilty but pay the cost of prose

Commonwealth vs Abraham Peter-
man. In this case Abraham Peter
man was charced with' havins made
threats and pointed a gun at his bro
ther. John Peterman. who was the

evidence introduced. The interests
of the defendant were looked after by

of the cost and the defendant one
third.
The Grand Jury came in and re
