Reed, if one can judge trom pres ent indications. If anything In: is more dictatorial than the man from Maine ever dreamed of being." That is not a Democratic opinion, but one uttered by a prominent member ot the House, whose name cannot be used, because he spoke in confidence to a personal menu. It indicates, however, that things are not turning out in accordance with the numerous prophesies of reform that were to be inaugurated when Mr. Henderson became Speaker. Democrats are rather enjoying the Republican criticism of Mr. Mc Kin lev's cold standard bill, alleged to J SJ l have been prepared by a Republican caucus committee, which was made public several days ago. Although the bill explicitly declares for the sin gle gold standard, and favors the national banks, the ultra gold men object to it because it does not pro vide for calling in the greenbacks as well. Several Republican Senators have said that the bill cannot get through the Senate in its present shape, and have predicted such radi cal amendments thereto as will result in a dead lock between the House and Senate, and no financial legisla tion. Democrats are not discussing the bill to any extent, just now, but they will be glad to have the Repub lican party go into the Presidential campaign with that bill defining its financial position. lirasks, says all the Republican talk about, not having tried to carry that State and being glad that Col. Hall's Famiiy Tills are the best. has been decidedly improved upon during re cent years in attorning a more numau death, Philadelphia officials are con fronted with the lact mat uiey not a scaffold ot sufficient capacity to hang four persons. The Sheriff is in a quandary, as he does not wish to u whnW.ile hancinc. The lac of a scaffold big enough to hang the five men together may prove a means that may pievent ail from being exe cuted upon the same day. If a new scaffold is not erected for ;,-,,( nvnition of the murderers, then the Mauch Chunk structure will be secured, as it has been loaned to different county officials in tne aiate during the past twenty years. In 1876 four men met their death at Mauch Chunk, and it was at this ex oontirm that death proved less painful to the unfortunate than at an,y ot those held in the State before that date. This humanitarian feature was the result of an idea conceived by the late Mayor Edwin Fitler, ot Philadel phia, who witnessed the bungling L;n,r n( William Gettv, at Easton, after the rope had btoken. That death should come in the easiest way possible is a belief shared by specta- tors, and, ot course, uie viuiu. n.v. likewise. Getty was found guilty of tho murder ot his wife, and as hang ,.,r nnt as numerous then as how, the officials concluded to con duct the ceremony in an island on the Lehigh River, near where it empties into tne Delaware, and grant the pub lic an opportunity of witnessing it. It was a great day in Northamp- 1 ton's county seat and the people 101 miles around turned out in iarKc num bers, expecting to see a successful ex ecution, but they were wofully disap pointed, as it was a frightful affair. Cutting the rope method of hanging was then in vogue and the rope broke ,;.i-, nttu. who annealed to the Sher- iff to stay the procedmgs and let him 1 go free. Getty was Kept waning while another rone was secured and he was dragged up and strung to death. Since then the island in the river has been called Getty s Island. Haunr Fitler concluded to make a special brand of rope that would pre vent this unnecessary suucuug humiliation on the part of the exe cuted, and this he djd. Since then this brutal feature of executions no longer exists, and in whatever section of the county a hanging occurs, rope is forwarded to the officials without cost.
