3 THE COLUMBIAN BLOOMSBURQ, PAJ WASHINGTON. From our Regular Correspondent. Washington, Nov. jo, 1809. Republican members of the House are scrambling as eagerly as though the big prize the Speakership had not been awarded months ago. Tne clairmanships of committees and the patronage of the House are prizes for which they are now struggling. Can non and Hitt, both of Illinois, have been assured of retaining their places at the head of the Appropriation and Foreign committees; consequently there is no fight upon cither of them, not because the selections are ac quiesced in but because they know that fighting will be useless. The big gest fight is over the chairmanship of the Ways and Means Committee, which carries with it the floor leader ship of the ""party. Payne, of New York, was chairman of that committee after the death of Mr. Dingley, in the last House, and he claims it again. But several other members, including Dalzcll, of Pennsylvania, and Hopkins, of Illinois, think they have equal claims, and as Mr. Payne is not over popular with members they are getting strong backing. The fact that Illinois is already booked for two big chair manships will probably operate against Hopkins. A big shake-up is likely in the membership of the committee on Bankine and Currency, which was packed by Reed for the especial pur pose of preventing its reporting a fi nancial bill. In this House it is to be packed for the purpose of reporting a financial bill, the one declaring for the single cold standard, to which Mr. Henderson is thoroughly committed. The job of reorganizing the Committee was made easy for Mr. Henderson by the failure of some of its most prom inent members, including its chairman "Joe" Walker, of Mass. to return to the house. The old Reed officers of the House are all fiuhtinti for re-elec tion. The latest imperialistic dream in eludes a combination between this government, Great Britain, and Ger many, for the purpose of dominating the commerce and preserving the peace of the world. Some believe that this combination has already been partially made. report containing a single sentenoe of praise for Otis. And that isn't all that has become known. Admiral Dewey, while declining to criticise Otis, told Mr. McKinley that if the American army had been commanded by the right sort of an ollker there would have been n war viih ihe Filipinos. That is Baid to hive been the principal reason for curtailing the authority of Otis, by fixing it so that Gens. Mac- Arthur, Lawton, and Wheaton, would be left free to fight the troops under them in their own way during the present campaign against Aguinaldo. Very few democratic Senators and Representatives have yet reached Washington, for the session of Con gress shortly to open. But those who have been in Washington since the State elections have all been disposed to regard the outlook for democratic success next year as decidedly favor able. With a majority of votes in the President's own state, where vast sums of monev were used, against his party's candidate, they do not even regard that state as sure to go for McKinley. It is,' they believe, merely a question of uniting the anti-republican vote to elect tne next President, and the re publican Congress may assist materi ally in doing that. Lack of sufficient rains to make rafting floods will necessitate the banking before freezing weather sets in of twenty-two million feet of logs lying in the Susquehanna River and and its tributaries west of Lock-Haven and in Pine Creek. This will have to be done by men and teams and will cost the lumbermen thousands of dollars. Next spring the logs will be rolled back into the streams at another big expense. Eight million feet lying be tween Williamsport and Lock Haven will be driven into the boom on an artilTcial flood made by means ot a 'splash" dam erected on the 'breast of the dam at Lock Haven backing the water up twelve miles and letting it loose ween the dam is broken, a four loot flood. The Cruiser Charleston, wrecked off the coast of the island of Luzon, although one of the oldest ships of our new navy, was worth more than half a million dollars, and that sum may now be added to the large and rapidly growing amount that this country is paying for imperialism. What readers of this paper have known for sometime that Boss Piatt was scheming to get Gov. "Teddy" Roosevelt on the ticket with Mr. Mc Kinley next year is beginning to be fully understood by friends of other would-be running mates of Mr. Mc Kinley. That Piatt was working with the knowledge and consent of Roose velt has been suspected from the first, and now it is practically certain. Roosevelt told a prominent New York Republican the other day that if the nartv managers wished him to run for the Vice Presidency he would accept Humph ! of course he would accept and be almighty glad of the oppor tunity, too. Arrnrdine to what seems to be trustworthy information, the adminis tration is secfetly dickering with Aguinaldo. It is said that Gen. Otis, was instructed to open communication with Aguinaldo and submit certain propositions from this government to him. and that Otis replied that he had forwarded the dispatches to Gen. Mac- Arthur, with instructions to net tnem to Auuinaldo. if he could find him Not a word of information as to the nature of the propositions submitted tft Auninaldo. or rather which this government is trying to submit to him, can be had in official circles, further than a ctfitement that thev relate to Spanish prisoners. Why the preliminary report of th Phitinnini Commission, which was forced by Mr. McKinley for use Ohio did not throw any boquets Gen. Otis has been ascertained. Ad miral Dewey put his foot down on the How Animals Doctor Themselves. If a person has a sick animal re member nature has made it to be its own doctor. When a dog losses his appetite he eats dog grass if he can get it. Cats do the same. An ani mal that has rheumatism gets out ot the sun. Certain kinds of ants have regularly organized ambulance corps. A dog run over by a carriage stayed three weeks in running water and thus cured itself. A terrier hurt its eye. It refused to eat much and cot under a counter where it was dark and stayed there till the eye was better. Its treat ment consisted in applying saliva to the upper part of its paw and rubbing the wounded eye. Animals sometimes cet traumatic fever and they treat themselves with continued application of cold water if let alone and they can get the water. Dare Not Tell the Truth. ss A preacher once said : "You editors dare not tell the truth. If you did you could not live. Your newspapers would be a failure." I he editor re plied : "You are right and the min ister who will at all times tell the bare truth about his members alive or dead, will not occupy the pulpit more than one Sunday, and he will find it neces sary to leave town in a hurry. I he press and pulpit go hand in hand with whitewash Drusn ana Kino worus mag nifying little virtues into b'g ones. The pulpit press and grave-stones are the great saint making triumvirate And the great minister went away looking very thoughtful, while the editor turned to his work, telling about the surpassing beauty of the bride while in fact she was as ugly as a mud fence. The reputation which some large stores get for being disobliging to their cuMomcrs or having uncivil clerks could In the ninjority of enses be trnced directly back to the shoppers them selves, writes Kdwnrd ISok In Ladies' Home Journal. I moke tio claim of perfection for the clerks who stand be hind lie counters of our great stores where women shop. They are only common mortals, full of fuults. Hut, considering what they are culled upon to go through nnd unduro nt the lunula of thoughtless women, the constant wonder is thnt they nre so chil nnd obliging. If the truth could U known it would be found thnt they suffer far more than they inflict Buffering. If the roll could be called of hnrd-workiiig, innocent girls who have lost their posi tions because of ill-founded complaints made by "influential" customers whose accounts the 'firm could not afford to lose, It would be u roll of riisgrnce- to American shoppers. The girls behind the counter nre human although from the actions of some women we might believe otherwise human In yieir faults, but nlso in their finer reelings. Very often they represent better fam ilies, better breeding, than thnt which is revealed to them from the other side of the counter. Started Ton IllKh.
