AFTER RICH CORPORATIONS Cinker Snyn JttMlre Shall' be l)iini-Tlin Principal Mow Ik to Oimt'tlie Klevatnl Btriit'turt) from Nnv York' llnttery Park Where It Has Stood for Twenty Team. New York, Feb. 21. There wan an In- tetvKtlng rumor yesterday thnt the ' avowed purpose of Messrs. Gould and Batee to equip the Manhattan system with electric power had brought much of the trouble which has Just manifest ed itself as coming from the direction of Tammany Hall. Mr. Croker Is largely Interested In compressed air as j V 1UUU T O w I iui I CI. I. 71.vjn. v.... LUI . 1 Tammany Hall leaders would like to nee a change in the Manhattan man agement before the contracts for mo tin power are determined upon. In an Interview yesterday morning Richard Croker posed as the champion of the people's rights, and said he ts after other corporations. He said: "There Is but one thing; In this mat ter that Tammany wants, and that Is Justice. Tammany was returned to power In this city because a majority f the citizens thought that the big corporations were not respecting tho lights of the people. 'Vye were put into office to see If the people could not get back something which belonged to them. We wunt Battery Park for one thing. That belongs to the people, and Tammany will see that the people get what's coming to them. Then we want better service from the Manhattan rail road. We want a clean service. We want well ventilated cars and we don't want to get the pneumonia every time the guards open the doors. Vestibules on the cars in winter would prevent the people from catching colds when the doors were opened. We want clean cars. We don't want those dirty rope mats which absorb all kinds of disease germs. The mats ought to be of some material which could be easily clean ed. "If the Manhattan had the Interest of the people at heart It would not have allowed a week to go by without fixing the accommodations at the stations, Half of the water pipes which broke in tbe stations in the ccld snap last week am still unrepaired. For that reason the rooms In many of the stations have been closed. We want quick service at n(?ht and mora cars In the day time so that business men need not stand up oil the way to and from Harlem dur ing the busy hours. "Our policy Is one at a time. After ire have set everything In motion to awe thul the people get Justice from the Slanhattan, other street railways will receive attention from Tammany. We want all corporate Interests to do Jus tice to the people who put us In office, Financiers may call this persecution, tf they will. I den't care. It Isn't per secution. It Is a desire on our part to that Justice Is done. We want these corporations to obey the law made by the people's representatives; not to make laws for themselves and override the will of the people." The Elevated's Side. The Manhattan directors still have a few cards left, and while no poHltive information was obtainable, it was re ported that the Tammany authorities may find thoniHelvcs held up as the worst obstructions to the Improvement of the elevated system. In fact, it is possible that at the tm-etlnK of etockholders of the Man litttun on February "8. originally call-c-d for the purpose of ratifying the plan to c-hunae the motive power on llw elevated Hystem and to provide other improvements for the public, it may bo voted to give up for the pres ent all such pluiiH. For If a part of thrir property may be taken away from them, some of the heaviest hold era of Manhattan securities argued yesterday, what is the use of spending noney to improve it? The directors of the Manhattan Ele trated Uiiilroad were not prepared yea terday to make any open answer to the attack on the corporation by Tam many Hall. If an open fight should come there will be Interesting revela tion affecting the stock market and the desire of Influential inert in Tam many to forco a sale of the Manhattan road to the men who control the Met ropolitan Traction Company. Judge Dillon, It Is understood, has advised against any statement at this time by the owners of a majority Interest In the Manhattan, but It Is said that at the proper time the facts will be forth com Ing. The Improvements demanded by the board of health along the route of the "I." roads will, It Is said, have to be carried out by tho company, and It Is asserted that the municipal assembly Hill And other means of causing a mon cy outlay by the Manhattan directors. This, with the expense Involved In changing from Bteum to electricity, would cause a fall In the quoted val uta of tho stock, and of course the future of the property would be In financial danger should Tammany force the company nt enormous ex IMrnse to buy the right of way over or through private property to the Bat tery. Tammany's demand that the Man hat tan system shall get out of tho Battery Park before the end of August Is not taken seriously by tho.e who are well Informed. Should the Mar. hut tan people fall by any other tneutia they would bo forced to compromise with tho Interests that are now at tacking them. Those who are on intl mate terms with the Goulds say that there will be no compromise, und that Tammany Hall will be prevented from Interfering with the operation of the road through the park. The Gould interests are confident 011 this point, and the rise in the slock 2tt points yesterday In a few hours showed that the Tammany men who expected to realize large profits by a sudden fall in prices, will be badly huit if they remain in the market.
