3 THE COLUMBIAN, BLOOMSBUf WASHINGTON. from our Hogular Correspondent. Washington, Oct. i, 1897. The Treasury deficit is still the fly in the administration's milk. The deficit for the third month of the lust quarter of the fiscal year, which closed vesterday, was not so great as for the first two months of the quarter, but that was because of a heavy decrease in expenditures and not because of any large increase in receipts. The deficit for the quarter is in the neigh borhood of $30,000,000, and there is no good reason for expecting that it will be much less in the second quar ter, although members of the admin istration are now predicting that the receipts of the government will equal the expenditures by the first of Janu ary. It is known that this continued deficit has been a source of consider able worry to Mr. Mc Kinky and his cabinet, and believed that it was one of the reasons why the administration was so willing to have the sale of the Union Pacific Railroad rushed before Congress meets. They count upon the government's share of the pur chase money to increase the available cash in the Treasury. Mr. McKinley has returned to Washington, but his traveling isn't quite over for the season, as Uoss Hanna needs him in his business, and lias arranged another trip to Ohio for him. It is understooil that tins trip will be made the latter part of this month and that while in Ohio Mr. Mc Kinley will make at least one speech for Ilanna. If a little thing like con sistency cut any figure with the I Ianna- McKinley combine, it would be per tincnt to ask if there was impropriety in the Secretary of State taking part in the Ohio campaign, why the I'resi dent can do so with propriety ? The little gathering of goldbugs calling themselves a '-monetary com mission" and claiming to represent the entire country has, after dividin themselves up into committees on, Metallic currency, demand obligations, and banking, taken a recess until October 11. So far as the public is concerned they might just as well have adjourned sine die. The machinery of the Tension Bureau is being unblushingly used to help along the campaign of Uoss ilanna in Ohio. A rummer 01 cictks have been transferred to the middle division, in which Ohio is, from another division, in order to expedite all applications for pensions for citi zens "of Ohio now pending, and ir order that all pension inquiries made by Ohio Congressmen may be answer ed the same day they are received. Of course, this is not fair towards ap plicants for pensions in other States, hnf it allows the Ohio voter to see what "pull" Hanna has, and after election Ohio applications will cease to be specially favored. When a man adopts quesuonauie methods in an avowed attempt to get rich by catching "suckers," as Mr. John Wedderburn, head of the busi ness of John Wedderburn & Co., did, he knowingly accepts all the chances of having himself officially branded as a fraud. Therefore no sympathy was wasted on him when it was announced that the Commissioner of Parents had decided to disbar John Wedderburn & Co. from practice before the U. S. Patpnt Office, for fraud, and that the ' . 1 1 t,Soo and 2,000 people will be pre sent. The business sessions will be held in the supreme court room and the officers will m.ike their headquar ters at the I. !it'; Intel. The sixth ami seventh d.y.rtes will be conferred on the evenings of Nov. 10 and 11 in the opera hou.x, J. II. Urigliam, the national master, will preside at the sessions ot the meeting. Deafness C.iunot ba Cured by local applications as they cannot reach the diseased portion of the ear. There is only one way to cure deaf ness, and that is by constitutional remedies. Deafness is caused by an maimed conoition of the mucous lining of the Eus'achian Tube. When this lube is inflamed you have a runib- in sound or imperfect hcarine, and when it is entirely closed, Deafness is the result, and unle s the inflamma tion can be taken out and this tube restored to its normal condition, hear tng will be octroyed forever ; nine cases out of ten are caused by Catarrh, which is nothing but an inflamed con dition of the mucous surfaces. We will give One Hundred Dollars for anv case of Deafness (caused by catarrh) that cannot ba cured by 1 tail's Catarrh Cure. Send for circulars ; free. 1'. J. CHENEY & CO., Toledo, O.
