V i HE COLUMBIAN. BLOOMSBURG. PA. W0SU3 OF WISDOM. Find a way or make one. Every thing is either pusher or pushed. The world always listens to a man with a will in him. Morden. The only worthy end of all learning, nf all science, of all life, in fact, is that human beings should love one another better. George Eliot. A loving confidence in the God we have offended is the key to his heart, the key which unlocks the treasury of his grace. Rev. E. M. Gouldburn, D.l). There are no songs comparable to the songs of Zion, no orations equal to those of the prophets, and no poli tics like those which the Scriptures teach. Jno. Milton. If you would be well with a great mind, leave him with a favorable im pression of you i if with a little mind leave him with a favorable impression of himself. Coleridge. When God sends darkness, let it be (larK. a is u vum iu mm wc tun light it up with candles, or make it i !t: ..: . . . anything but dark. It may be be cause of the darkness we shall see some new beauty in the stars. The Story of William and Lucy Smith. Restraining grace is an amazing work of God. It is more wonderful than his setting a bound to the sea that it cannot pass over. Think what a hell every unconverted bosom would become if the Spirit were to withdraw and give men over to their own hearts' lusts. McLheyne. The universal reign of love, creat ing new economies, a new commerce, new politics, a new social life, sup. planting greed or gain with passion for service, and mutual competition with mutual helpfulness, unreal as it seems to us, immersed in the struggle and held by the habits and ruled by the ideas of to-day, is yet the destined result and fulfillment of the centuries and ages of divine teaching. Philip Moxom. Creation is the organ, and a graci ous man finds out its keys, lays his hand thereon, and wakes the whole system of the universe to the harmony of praise. Mountains and hills, and other great objects are as it were the bass of the chorus; while the trees of the wood, and all things that have life, take up the air of the melodious song. Spurgeon. Make the Must of Yourself- It is the duty of every man to make the most of himself. Whatever his capacities may be, he is sure to find some place where he can ba useful to himself and to others. But he cannot reach his highest usefulness without eood health and he cannot have good health without pure blood. The blood circulates to everv orcan and tissue and when it is pure, rich and healthy it carries health to the entire system. but if it is impure it scatters disease wherever it flows. Hood's Sarsapa rilla is the one true blood purifier It cures salt rheum, scrofula, catarrh, dyspepsia and rheumatism because these diseases have their oriinn in the blood. Mowing of the Harvest. After everv harvest, especially a wet one. there is sure to be a rank growth of weeds that until harvest have been kept back by the growth ot grain. So soon as that is removed they have all the soil to themselves, and if rain occurs while the weather is warm a ereater amount of plant food than the field has previously furnished. No wonder that the weeds find these conditions so favorable that they ouickly overshadow the grass and clover seedings. The only way to cure this evil is to go over the piece with the mower set high enough to miss most ot the clover and there fore not leaving much' of a mulch over it when cut. If this is done, the fag-weed and other weeds that crowd out the clover will themselves be overshadowed and smothered by it. The check to growth of ragweed, which h at this season nearly ready to flower, is much greater than it is to the clover. which is not so tar aa vanced. As a conseouence the clover giowth quickly smothers the ragweed so that it is scarcely able to blossom again. This is not the best of this method. The stimulation to the soil by cutting o!f the tops of ragweed and an occasional clover leaf will make so large a growth of clover that a month later it will probably also need to be cut to keep the clover from blossomim? and seeding, as spring sown clover will sometimes do the same vear it is sown, says American Cultivator, authority for the foregoinx. A Delightful Balm to Catarrh Suffers Time was when such drastic measure as the ohvsician's knife or burning the affected parts in catarrh cases were resorted to. Modern medical scisnce has stepped in and the means of curing has lost nu ine barbaric tendency. Dr. Agnew s Catanhal Powder is a most potent Temedy. It relieves in a few minutes and cures most stubborn cases. Sold by C. A. Kleim. Truths Told la a Few Words. A child's respect tor its parents is not secured by over leniency any more than by over-severity. A daughter should never seek nor be allowed to "outdress" her mother. In every family the mother should be the best-dressed member. The discarded finery of a daughter should never constitute a mother's wardrobe. No one feels especially dignified in the presence of one whose old clothes she is wearing, and a mother should at all times preserve her dignity before her children. The mother who never loses her queenli ness will never lose her crown. Preventable misfortunes consist, chiefly, of manifold things little to do, but immense things to have done. The man who earns one dollar and spends two, and the man who earns two and spends one stands on either side of the hair-line between heedless ness and discretion, between ruin and safety. Parents generally receive that mea sure ot filial respect they deserve not always perhaps, but very gener ally. When a mother allows her daughter to appropriate her wraps, gloves, veils or other articles of personal attire, she begins a policy of familarity which, sooner or later breeds contempt. A respect for one's belongings engenders a respect for their possessor. Ladies' Home Jturnal. JUR0K8 FOR SEPTEMBER Many are Called, but Few are Chosen Walk Into the Box.
