The State law was invoked at At lantic City for the first time on Sun day for the purpose of closing amuse ment places on Sunday. The war being waged by the city against the desecrators of the Sabbath, it is an nounced, will be vigorously pushed until the offenders have either closed up or are in jail. Manager Flood, of the Scenic Railroad, who was fine! last week under the city ordinance, has certioraried the ordinance, which takes the case into the Supreme Court. He kept his place open last Sunday, and on Tuesday a warrant for his arrest was issued under the State law. He is charged with being a common nuisance. D. Dedonnea, who was sentenced to three days in the city jail some lime ago for barking, was again ar rested on the charge of keeping his place open on the Sabbath. He had boasted that the city ordinance had no terrors for him and when he was brought before Recorder Ingersoll that official sentenced him to ten days imprisonment He is now in jaiL The authorities are determined that Sunday amusements must cease, and if necessary all places of business will be closed on that day. This ex treme step will not be taken unless the opposition of the amusement men becomes so great that it is unavoid able. OHE OF TWO WATS. The bladder was created for one purpose, namely, a receptacle for the urine, and as such it is not liable to any form of disease except by one of two ways. The first way is from im perfect action of the kidneys. The second way is from careless local treat ment of other diseases. chief cause. Unhealthy urine from unhealthy kidneys is the chief cause of bladder troubles. So the womb, like the blad der, was created for one purpose, and if not doctored too much is not liable to weakness or diseases, except in rare cases. It is situated back of and very close to the bladder, therefore any pain, disease or inconvenience mani fested in the kidneys, back, bladder or urinary passage is often, by mistake, attributed to female weakness or womb trouble of some sort The error is easily made and may be as easily avoided. To find out correctly, set your urine aside for twenty four hours; a sediment or settling indicates kidney or bladder trouble. The mild and ex traordinary effect of Dr. Kilmer's Swamp-Root, the great kidney, and bladder remedy, is soon realized. If you need a medicine you should have the best. At druggists fifty cents and one dollar. You may have a sample bottle and pamphlet, both sent free by mail. Mention The Columbian and send your address to Dr. Kilmer & Co., Binghamton, N. Y. Tbey have a novel method of push ing the sale of patent articles in Lon don. A number of men are smartly drossed as servant and sent out to suburban Hhajw to purchase the com modity It Is dVslred to boortk The men sre specially selected, with a view to convey the IropresAlon that their em ployers are persons of good position. A score of these Ingenious individuals will call at all the faehtonable shops in the districts allotted to them, aud ak for the specific article they wish to introduce. They will Insist upon having this and no other, regarding with scorn the suggestion that they might accept a substitute. In tunny case, of course, the proprietor has not the new article in stock; but a few days later a commercial travel ler waits upon htm with the article required. A smart tradesman who disltkee to dteapjwint his customers will Invariably amll himself of this opportunity to give an order for the article In Question. This shrewd scheme bos proved of undoubted util ity in the Introduction of a really good article of produce. It Is scarce ly objectionable and frequently forms the basis of a sound and extensive business. Wm Totara la Earopa. The ouly countries in Europe where women vote to any extent are In those places that we would least ex pect it; for example, in Finland and Iceland. On the Continent the woman suffrage movement has made no great headway of late years, says the Clu tauquan. The women have no voting privileges to speak of in either France or Germany. In several European countries they are allowed to vote by proxy. Thus, in the Australian provinces women can vote for members of the provin cial and Imperial Parliaments, only by proxy. They can vote In person at lo cal elections. The same is true of Russia, where women who are heads of households vote at local elections. As to the widows, they bave the right to vote at municipal elections In Belgium, while in Italy they can vote for members of Parliament Tha LadT'sAt-a. Probably the most remarkable drummer who ever lived was John Henri, the famous troubadour-niajor of the Emperor Napoleon. One of his feats was to play on fifteen different ly toned drums at the same time In so soft and harmonious a manner that. Instead of the deafening uproar that might have been expected, the effect was that of a novel and complete In strument In playing he passed from one drum to the other with such won derful quickness that the eyes of the spectators could hardly follow the movements of his bands and body. It is wise for men who are leaving the comfort of their homes and the luxuries of civilization to consider some of the things with which they will have to contend if they reach the Alaska gold country in safety. No man who has never lived in a country where the mercury constantly freezes can have any adequate idea of the numbing intensity of that cold, even when he is surrounded with all the comforts of urban life. The man who is accustomed to taking a bath every day in his life must remember that in the Klondike he must forego bathing for nine months. During this period he must wear the same suit of underclothing, and it must be so thick that it will wear for three years without dropping off. His clothing will become infested with vermin. There is no escape from it. If he seeks a palliative in whisky he must pay fifty cents a drink for it. For three-quarters of a year he must live in dim twilight, for at midwinter the sun is above the horizon only fifteen or twenty minutes a day. He must eat bacon that is nearly all fat, and beans, with a little flour and tea, the latter without sugar. He will likely suffer horribly from scurvy. He will find women whom he would turn from in disgust at home reigning as queens. But they will not wear bloomers. The Canadian mounted police have issued an order against bloomers. These are some of the things the newcomer can enjoy if he locates a claim that pans out and is prosperous. In one respect he will be better off than he would be at home. He need have no fear of robbers. The riff-raff of humanity has gather ed at the Klondike, but there is no thievery. Riches are absolutely se cure. No robber dares take a single ounce that does not belong to him, for the very excellent reason that he knows he could never get away with it There has not been a single rob bery since the influx into the gold country.
