TRACKING A CHILD. Showing That t a Bloodhound Is not Fierce Beast. Always So many terrible stories of the fero city of bloodhounds have been told that it is refreshing to read a true story of a chase by a bloodhound in which the hunter and the hunted were equally satisfied. It is vouched fnr bv a writer in Good Words, who had it from an eyewitness. The bloodhound was enjoying a .roll with his master on the sands of Weston-super-Mare, quietly following tlie horse his owner rode. Neither was thinking of a chase. In fact nothing seemed further from the character of the dog than a desire to interfere with any human being. 1 he group ot pleas lire seekers scattered over the sands .iw nothing unusual in him, nor did the poor distracted woman who ran from one group to another frantically asking for tidings of a lost child. No body knew anything of the missing hoy, and when in her desperation she approached the gentleman on the horse he also shook his head. Hut though he knew nothing of her boy, he was not so sure that he could not help her find him. Me alighted from his horse, and thrusting his arm through the bridle bent over the hound, putting both hands carelessly round his head. Then he took from the woman something that looked like a child's hat and held it toward the dog, talking to him the while The hound sniffed and whined mourn lully, as if unwilling to leave his mas ter. Soon however, he lifted his head in the air, uttered a short, sharp bark or bay and began sniffling about the sands. For a minute or two lie followed the scent in a zigzag fashion, and then, with a long, loud bay, turned off at an ama.ing pare, ran in a straight line across the sands, crossed the parade, and, baying as he went, turned down a side street. That was an exciting chase the field the streets of a populous water ing place and the game a lost child. The loud voice of the dog could be heard in the distance, guiding those who followed. The mother's feet were swift, but she could not keep up with the dog. On he went till he had run his prey to ground. Then he stopped and fawn ed upon the little lad, who was over joyed to find so friendly a playmate. When the mother came up, hunter and hunted were the best of friends, so much so that neither was willing to part with the other. The gentleman had more than orce to summon his dog before he would consent to leave the child. As for the hoy, he could not be led away while the dog remained, and after the hound had disappeared he was still heard to murmur, "I would like that dear dog gie for my own." Practical Astronomy. We do not need to be astronomers, to know t'.iat certain stars, are to be found in certain parts of the heavens, at certain times, and at no other times. Astronomy seems to be an exact science, at least so far as its conclusions are capable of mathemati cal demonstration. Its students tell us that our earth is one of a number of planets revolving around a centre, and that this svstem is but one cf similar systems, and that they all re volve around a centre common to all. Astronomers have been searching for tr's central point or power and have thought, from time to time, that they have lound it in this or that planet, the star Strius being one of the last ones named, but we believe that this particular one, has also been abandon ed. But if the fact of this central point or power remains are we not justifiable in assigning to it certain qualities or attributes ? Would not have to he self existent, all power ful, to move and keep in motion these vast systems ; all wise to guide them in their course ? If this is so, do we not atrive at an absolute, Supreme Being which the Christian will call God ? An Intelligent Dog. More than one story has been told of the refusal on the part cf a dog who nan been entrusted with carrying a paper to nis master to take the wrong one when offered to him. Such rela tions have generally been receive with a decree of incredulity. How ever, an English paper published in f'Bypt, the EsvPtuin Gazette, tells story of the kind with a ciicumstatial ily which appears to entitle it to credence. The paper says that one of its pa trons in Cairo regularly sent his dog, a large and very intelligent Russian hound, to get the Gazette on its ar rival from Alexandria. The animal always carried a coin in his mouth with which to pay for the paper. One day the dog came back with out the paper and with the coin still in his mouth. This was good proof that the papers had not been obtained and lost. The gentleman went to the newsdealer's to see what had been the matter. He found that the copies of the Egyptian Gazette had all Deen sold very soon after their arrival and that when the dog came none was left. The dealer gave the dog a copy of the Bosphore F.zyptien, a French paper, instead, but he absolutely re fused to receive it. Therefore the dealer gave him back the coin and sent him home. It is not to be supposed that the dog could distinguish by sight between a French paper and an English paper, or indeed between any two newspa pers of similar general appearance, but he had a method of his own of distinguishing them by means of the sense ot smell.
