There never was a clearer case of asking for bread and receiving a stone than the so-called anti-trust amend mPnt to the tariff bill, prepared by the republicans of the Senate Finance committee. It was not their first in tention to report any amendment on this subject, but they became satisfied that if they did not there was danger that the Pettigrevr anti-trust amend ment, which was recently tabled by a little parliamentary juggling, might be brought to a direct vote and be adopt ed. Then they got their heads to gether and concocted the sham that will be JUSl aDOUl as iiijunuus iu his trusts as the Sherman anti-trust law has been, and they actually expect the voters of the country to accept their work as an earnest and real at tempt to curb the power of trusts, instead of seeing it for what it really is an attempt to bamboozle the voters who don't know any better than to look to republicans for legis lation adverse to trusts. Senator Turpie gave the republican tariff bill a raking fore and aft in a speech in favor of the amendment supported by the minority of the Finance Committee, to tax inheri tances over $S,ooo, 2 per cent for the next five yeirs. He told the republi cans that they had made the meas ure prohibitory and that besides, no bill had ever been presented that made so large and unprovoked a spoliation of the world's commerce. He said there was "compound ielony" in nearly ever schedule of it, and that the bill made it almost a penal off.mse to carry on trade with the A Brief Romance Alexander Dennison, " 20 years old, and Maggie Cantwell, 17 years old, both of Joliet, ran away from home recently and went to Chicago to get married.
