3 THE COLUMBIAN, BLOOM8BURQ; PA: WASHINGTON. from our Regular Correspondent. Washington, June 25th, 1897. Hon. Wm. J. Bryan received con siderable attention in the Senate this week. Senator Allen started it by rising to a personal explanation and -t-nvinff in the most positive terms the charge that Mr. Bryan's offer of $1,500, from the proceeds ot nis ink. was accompanied by a stipula tion that the next populist National reinvention should take no action -inst a fusion of the supporters of i!upr. He added that the draft for the money had been sent to him per sonally, and after Senator Butler, Chairman of the populist National Committee, declined to accept it he Mli-nl. at the sueirestion of Mr. Bryan, invested the money to be used in the interest of bimetallism. Sena tor Butler confirmed the statement of Senator Allen that the money ftad ivn oiven without condition, and said that while he approved Mr, Bryan's motive he felt that the accept ance of the money might be open to misconstruction, and had therefore declined it. Later that dyed-in-the-wool republican, Senator Hoar said : " I have a good deal of respect for Mr. Bryan. His character has im pressed me very favorably, and I have never joined in criticisms upon him," and Senator Stewart clinched things by remarking : " It is no use criticising Bryan, as he's going to be the next President." Theie were no new developments connected with either the annexation The Hops ltoutiion. J The Ninth Annual Reunion of the Hess family and relatives was held in the Rupert (trove, (which is owned by Reuben Hess of this town) on the 24th dav of June, 1897. 1 he day was a pleasant one and very warm with threatening rain in the morning, wnich caused a few to stay away. There were only about two hundred present but all seemed to have a good and sociable time. I think it was the most successful reunion ever held. The reason for that was all present seemed to work as a reception committee. There were a great manv strangers present from a dts tance and thev too felt at home be, cause they were all Hess1 that day and foreer, and we were glad to have them with us. Especially our next President, Mr. Samuel M. Hess, of Lancaster, Pa., who says there are a great many more Hesses in and around Lancaster than there are around this part of the State. We are clad to hear that so that the Hesses don't tun out. It is a grand thing to take a day off and see your friends and relatives, and if you don't beieve it come next year and see. It will be held at Island Park, Northum berland, Pa., and our new President says he will have more there from Lancaster if we meet there, and we want to see them all. There has been quite a number of our friends and relatives called to the home above, whom we missed very much, for they were always present and worked hard to make it a success. But we are glad to say there is always some one to step in and lead the P&fFI696l8pN6P AIR. Wit n W.Vintnitophnr Flrmo wtuy an Into tlm Mit MtlflUftf Rdh.
