The only big show coming this year. m m m in am mm je Enormous Shows Combined Bloomsburg, flONDAY, JUNE 1st. Crancl Free Parade More than a Mile in Length, Daily at 10 Presenting more horses, kinds beasts, and the greatest novelty carriage. 2 performances dally The Teaching of the English Language. (CONTRIBUTED.) That the teaching of the English language in the majority of our schools, perhaps, better, in nearly all of them, is a deplorable failure, no one compe tent to judge would have the hardi hood to deny. To call the efforts at instruction, teaching, would not only belittle that profession, but would require a new definition of it. Honest trilling with the children's time, would in the majority of cases best character ize the performance. It is honest, be cause those who innocently pursue this course, verily believe that they are benefitting the children, while the fact is that they arc not only wasting their victims' time, but doing their mental powers positive harm, dwarfing them, instead of developing them with appropriate and prolitable work. Parsing words, analyzing sentences, and writing the various forms of the elements of sentences for the teacher's inspection, nevei has given any one the ability to use the pen with correct ness and case, nor indeed can it do so. Ability to write good English is so valuable an acquirement in all the walks of life, opens so many avenues of usefulness to young people, that a failure to teach it successfully should be considered just cause for the dis missal of a teacher. No one should be permitted to graduate from a high school, who cannot with correctness and consider able ease write an essay on a familiar subject. Allowing pupils to appear befoie an audience on Commencement day with orations and essays patched up by the teacher, and speak and read them as their own and as an index of the work of the school, is as discreditable as it is dishonest. TO HE CONTINUED. A MONSTER DOUBLE MENAGERIE WITH -JOHN ROBINSON AND FRANKiilN BR03. SHOWS COMBINED. The menagerie department of these combined shows is beyond a doubt the greatest that the world has ever known. The two menageries have been blended into one and the com bining of these two separate and dis tinct departments alone would make a display the equal of which has never been seen in this country. There are two distinct herds of elephants, camels and all sorts of lead stock, two separate departments of lions, tigers, panthers, and the only pair of real black tigers that has ever been seen in this country. The den of polar bears is a positive revelation to amusement seekers and the same thing was never seen in this country before with a traveling show. A great many dens of rare wild beasts are displayed daily in the mag nificent street parade, which is free to all and will take place daily at 10 a. m. And the very important fact must not be overlooked that the par ade, like every other department of these great shows is a double one, unlike any ever before seen. Many shows have and do at the present time advertise dishonestly that they have two shows in one but there has never been a combining of two really great shows in this land before and people who are in doubt as to the genuineness of the putting toget her of the John Robinson and Frank lin Bros.' Shows can readily set their minds at rest. This monster amuse ment institution comes to Blooms burg on June 1st for one day and wiil give two complete performances. a.
