THE COLUMBIAN. BLOOMSBURG, PA. Tor Botter ator Supply. A company is being formed to fur nish water to I.cwisburg, Milton and Watsontown. It is the intention to construct a reservoir in White Deer valley, in which there is a number of never failing streams, and pipe the water from that point to those three towns. The distance will be about eight miles to Watsontown and fifteen to Lewisburg. A corps of engineers, which have been at work on the sur vey for some time, completed their work Saturday. The pipe line will have a fall in the 15 miles of 250 feet, or about i6 feet to the mile. This will give ample pressure to throw the water to almost any desired height at either of the cities. It will be necessary to cross the river twice to reach all the towns named. It is proposed to begin work as soon in the spring as practicable, and when completed these Susquehanna towns will have a supply of water equal to most any town in the state, as White Deer valley is filled with the purest of mountain streams and springs. These towns heretofore have been supplied with water from the Susquehanna river. Now Year'i Day. "The birth of a New Year," says Charles Lnnib, "is of an interest too wide to be pretermitted by king or cobbler. N'o one ever legarded the 1st of January with indifference. It is that from which all date their time, and count upon what is left. It is the Nativity of our Common Advance." And yet the date of Ihe New Year has not always begun with the 1st of January. In fact, that month was not universally adopted as the first month of the year by modern Euro pean nations until the eighteenth cen tury, and this is the more remarkable inasmuch as the Romans, whose Km pirc m the course of their history embraced so considerable a part of Europe, thus considered it not onlv since time was fixed from the birth of our Lord, but for 250 years before that event. Hut now the 1st of Jan uary is an imperial day in the calendar of modern peoples. It is the day of festive observance, and the exchange of good wishes; the day of merrymak ings and good cheer; the day conse crated to mirth and surcease of labor. Phila. Record. WorU-... Important Appointments- Dr. Leonard Pearson, professor of the veterinary department of the University of Pennsylvania, has been appointed by Governor Hastings state veterinarian at a salary of $2,500. Dr. Pearson will have charge of all diseases of live stock in Pennsylvania under the direction of Secretary Kdge. He will also be a member of the state live stock sanitary board. Dr. Pearson is an authority on the ques tion of scientific veterinary practices and has studied in France and Ger many. He is a lecturer on veterinary science at the Pennsylvania State College. The appointment goes into effect at once. Will B. Powell, of Shadeland, has also bten re appointed by the governor a member of the stare board of agriculture. The va cancy on the board created by the death of Colonel James Young, of Middletown, has been filled by the appointment of Leonard H. Rhone, of Centre Hall, worthy master of the State Grange. Sneezed and Lost Her Teeth, Discomfiture of a Pretty Young Woman In a Post Office. New York, Jan. 3. A few days ago a pretty girl, attractively costumed, tripped up to the stamp window in the Post Office building, laid down two cents and was given a postage stamp. While she was moistening the paste a draught ftom the corridor caused her to sneeze. Out of her mouth flew a set of pearly teeth, which a bystander hastily picked up, and turned to present them to the owner, but she had fled. Then the teeth were taken to the superintendent, who holds them in the name of the United States, as trustee for the owner. If she does not appear, and it is not believed that she will, the teeth will be confiscated. A Big Verdict. Mrs. Sarah Bolich and her son, Harry, have been awarded $13,500 damages by arbitrators against the borough of Ashland for damages sus tained in the death of husband and father, Howard Bolich. The deceas ed was thrown from a horse that stumbled over a pile of stone and dirt, which, it is claimed, was allowed to remain on the street by the borough authorities without placing danger signals. The Schuylkill Traction com panv had deposited the dirt while making excavations for its tracks in that borough. Dyspepsia and Heart Burn. Berwick, Pa. Dec. 18, 1805. have taken nearly three bottles of Hood's Sarsaparilla, and it has helped me more than anything else that I have ever tried. I have taken it for dyspepsia and heart burn and cannot say too much in its praise." Miss M. Alice Moyer, West 2nd St., To the Grangers, Secretary Edge, of the state board of agriculture, requests all pomona and the subordinate granges, alliances. farm clubs, agricultural and horticul tural organizations to send delegates to the annual meeting of the board, which session will be held in Harris burg, January 12. The advisory committee of the board, realizing that it would be obligatory of the board to pay their own expenses, deemed it advisable to prepare a program for but one day, leaving the members to decide when they meet, whether they should remain in session for a longer period. If it is the wish of the ma jority of the members, the meeting will be extended a day longer. In The Beginning Of a new year, when the winter season of close confinement is only half gone, many find that their health begins to break down, that the least exposure threatens sickness. It is then as well as at all other times, and with people even in good health, that the lollom ing facts should be remembered, namely; that Hood's Sarsaparilla leads everything in the way of medi cines ; that it accomplishes the great est cures in the world ; has the largest sale in the world, and requires the largest building in the world devoted exclusively to the preparation ot the proprietary medicide. Does not this conclusively prove, if you are sick, that Hoods Sarsaparilla is the medi cine for you to take ? Girl Who Thinks Sho is a Ssoond Virgin Mary. A strange case of pitiable hallucina tion occurred at fclysburg, about six miles from Danville. Miss Celia Rothermel labors under the delusiou that she is a second Virgin Mary. On Christmas Miss Rothermel took some bed clothing and provisions and sought a manger, where she believed she would give birth to a second Messiah, She was not found until Saturday, and had to be dragged lrom the stable where she had sought shelter. Mon tour Democrat. The Mother of Sixty-Two Children. Brand, the celebrated Lnghsh arm quarian, tells of a woman who lived in Newcastle-upon-Tyne that was the mother of sixty-two children, all of whom lived to be baptized. Mr, Brand does not appear to consider the father of this prodigious family as be ing a man out of the ordinary. On the other hand, he minutely describes the woman, even to her height, weight, color of hair and eyes. He winds up by saying that she was a Scotch woman. Will Paint Them Black.
