Flood Alarm, The effect of the recent thaw and rain occasioned considerable alarm at Johnstown and elsewhere. It is only necessary to mention Conemaueh in ) connection with Johnstown to revive 1 tne saaciest memories 01 tne past and the most terrible flood disasters within our knowledge. Report from Johns town, dated the 6th inst. says : The thaw of ice and snow which set in last night as a result of the warm rain, which continued all day to-day and promises to last all of to night, has resulted in considerable damage to property. One cigar dealer, Her man Williams, is a loser to the extent of $500, the Herald company book bindery has been senous'y flooded and scores of residences and business houses more or less damaged by water as a result of frozen up water spouts. The damage reported is so serious to day that the police were sent out all over the business places of the city to warn merchants and others to clear the ice from their buildings. A more threatening dangei to night, however, is the rapid rise of the river. The great snow of a few days ago is melting on the mountains and rein forced by the heavy fall of rain is swelling the Conemaugh and Stoney Creek. There is an additional danger of a gorge of ice at the Pennsylvania stone bridge. There is considerable alarm to-night on that account. In any event unless the heavy rainfall ceases in a few hours and a cold spell comes, another flood such as was ex perienced last spring seems inevitable, The Judiciary Elect The Judges elected in the ' various counties of Pennsylvania in 1894 are as ionows ; Orphans' Court. Dullness in the Coal Trade Causes a Good Deal of Suffering Among tho Employes. The dullness of the coal trade the past six months has caused a great ileal of suffering among those who are dependent upon the mines for a livelihood. The families of a number of miners employed by a coal com pany in Kingston are said to be on the verge of starvation. The miners are obliged to stay in the mines from 7 in the morning until 5 in the even ing for one car. A committee called on the superin tendent and told him a pitiful and sad story of their condition, stating that in the present working of the mine they are unable to make a living, and are badly in need of food. The superintendent promised to look into the matter. Many families have to keep their children home from school because they cannot afford to buy them shoes. Some miners have not tasted meat for weeks. Etill Another Heath Prom Electro cution. Harry Schaeffer, a youne silk wea ver, of Camden, N. J., was walking along the street on the evening of the 6th inst., and stepping upon a broken electric light wire that was trailing up on the pavement the whole current passed through him. As he fell com pletely paralyzed he exclaimed, " My God, won't somebody lift me up." In falling he was thrown upon a mass of broken wires that had been left in the street since the storm, and his feet remained across the live wire; his body completing the circuit the cur rent continued to pass through him into the heap of wire. Thoueh a crowd gathered and witnessed the horrible scene, no one dared go to the poor man's assistance. As the current passed through the body it distorted the features into horrible grimaces and the terror stricken spec tators were uncertain whether the man was alive or dead. After several hours' delay the current was finally turned off and the body was picked up. The first shock undoubtedly killed the man and he felt no pain after he fell to the pavement. The soles of his shoes were burned through and his face, where it had rested against the wires, was burned to the bone. Pell While Carrying Dynamite. Florida fruit growers complain bit terly against the Weather Bureau at Washington and also the wise weather prophets all over the country, because of their failure to notify them of the recent cold wave which wrought out ruination to many fruit growers in the south. It is too bad, we admit t but then you must not expect too much of these scientific gentlemen who ex periment for falary. While the south dreads frost the north dreads cyclones, and they struck us simul taneouslv with the modern rain maker and false weather prophet. 1 GENERAL NEWS. ' I he urgency dihciency bill is no doubt as urgent as usual such bills generally are very urgent with Con gressmen and Senators and some other folks and yet we now hear it intimat ell that the republicans will continue to oppose its passage until Senatorial vacancies are filled. And as for change of tariff, there will be no further change if they can help it, though trusts and combines rule the roost forever. " Not counting their liberal mileage, postage, or the innumerable perqui sites that Serators and Congressmen allow themselves, their pay proper, at $5,000 each, amounts to $2,220,000 a year. Whatever the drift of the times may be, the tendency of salaried pub lic office is away from the poor house. But under our peculiar form of gov ernment, where the la-v-makmg powers are obliged to fix their own salaries and IHp themselves, what can the sovereign power do about it, except to call them " salary grabbers," &c. But that will neither diminish their number, put them on half time or effect a 10 per cent, reduction in either salaries or perquisites ; there fore Uncle Sam, being " rich enough to give us all a farm," just foots the bill, while the struggle to get to Con gress grows more intense. Electrocuted in Mid-Air. Frank Murphy, aged 27, was almost instantly killed recently in the Phila delphia, depot. He started to climb a long iron ladder leading from the ground to the roof to see the foreman about securing work, but lost his footing and threw out his hands to save himself. In so doing he grasped a live electric wire. He held on to the wire with both hands for several moments and then fell to the ground. He was dead when the employes reached his side. The man's hands were still smoking and the flesh was burned away clean to the bone. 1CI5EES INAUGURATE A STRIKE. All miners at DuBois and Rey noldsville Pa., struck on the 4th, inst. on account of wholesale discharges.
