About 10. 000 of tfieae cases have leu sent to the Medical Pivisiou for further examination. Nearly 300 supposed redpienta of petuiooj have been found to be dead. In the new board little attention ia paid to strict technlcalltiea that may nnjiutly take away pensioner's claim, but all ease are considered with a view of the worthi nesa of the individual to receive the pea- aioa. If two -reviewer concur In the opin ion of total disability in a cium, the latter ia not sent to the Medical Division: instead ot this action, which ia usually taken, the name of the pensioner ia permitted to re main undisturbed on the roll. Only ten or twelve case of rebutting evidence permitted to be filed ta the 60 days period accorded pensioners to bring such evidence have yet been received. The number, however, will increase daily here after, and within a week or a fortnight it is believed that a large amount of this ad ditional evidence will be received. Dempaey's friends expect to produce such evidence as will not only prove the Innocence ot Dempsey, but will also bring to light the exposure of a plot sensational In every respect. These claims will be embodied la the petition to reopen proceedings in the shape of written confessions mads by Patrick Uallagher and James Davidson, both ot whom -ire serving terms at the penitentiary, having been senteuced shortly after Demp sey. In the confessions of Gallagher and Davidson they say they were paid to swear away the liberty of Hugh F. ivmpsey and Robert H. i'eatty, each of whom," they now assert, were innocent ot the crime lor which they wen? confined. The Mohican's Kna-lnes Were Rendered I'selese for (Ms II mm by the flhot from the AUiandrla-Ppsculatlon as Bow the Real Poacher Will he Treated. Varhikoto. July 19. The additional details ot the firing on the Mohican have not yet coutrinced the Navy Department officials that the story la correct. There have been several communications ex- chau-,-ed with the patrol fleet since May C.'i, the date -riven as that of the engage ment, but no reference was made to any such event. The titmont that the department will ad tuit as reasonably probable It thnt if the Alexandria did escajw from the Mohican it was solely on account of the fog or superior speed, and not owing to the disablement of the Mohicn'e machinery by a shot. In deed, it is said that owing to the location of the machinery, well below the water line, it would scrcely be possible for so small a shot to reach it. , There Is a good devil of speculation at the Navy Department as to what fate may be in store for the Alexandria if the story he true. Some officers high in rank think that she may be classed as a pirate and treate-1 accordingly, but the cooler heads bold that as her original offense was not one "recognised by international law, and she was under a Hawaiian registry, she could not be taken upon the high seas. DETAILS OF THE ENGAGEMENT. The Mohlran Was Disabled Sis Honrs from the AlrtandHa's Phot. Salt FBAXotM-o. July 19 Details of the disabling of the U. S. man-of-war Mohican by the seal poaching steamer Alexandria have been received at Port Townsend. The Alexandria sailed from here last April under the Hawaiian flag, ostensibly for a hunting and fishing voyage in the North Pacific Ocean. The peculiarity of her ontflt was that she carried over -ri-rty men. many of thera espert seal hunters, aud that she had forty Winchester rifles aud several small cunuon. She also carried an unusually large amount of salt tor preserving skins, as well as many hogsheads in which to pack her catches of skins. McLeod. her commander, Is notorious as haiing conducted several raids on the Jap.tn coast. One of his vessels was seized by the Russians after a lively fight. In spite ot the fact that her destination was given out aa , the Japan coast, it was believed that she contemplated raids on Russian or Eehring sea seal rookeries, and the American patrolling fleet was warned to look out tor her. At daylight oa May a the Alexandria was observed by the Mo hican coming out from the lee of the island where the seals usually congregated In large numbers. The Mohican, which Is the flanshin of the squadron and commanded by Capt. N'.chol Ludlow, signaled to the Alexandria to heave to, which she disobeyed, and a couple of shots were fired across her bows. The Alexandria put on all steam and re turned the Sre. A small six-pound shot struck the Mohi can amidships and disabled the engines. The man-of-war sent a couple of shots af ter the fleeing poacher, but they flew wide of the mark. The Mohican lay to six boors repairing machinery. Meanwhile the Alexandria eseaned in a thick fog which was settling down. The Mohican spent several days searching for the vessel and returned to Ounalaska just aa the steamer Crescent City was leaving for fitka. The Mohican visited the Island where the Alexandria had been and found ample evi dence to warrant the assumption that a large number of seals had bren killed lately. PARDONS DENIED. It is reported that last January 1, Admiral Try on isbued aa order to the effect that when the literal obedience ot a signal would cause a collis ion or any other disaster, the officers in command ot the Teasels involved should act upon their own responsibility to avoid the danger.
