Many centuries ago the first monarch of the Province of Malabar gave to one of his chiefs, as a reward for dis tinguished services, his sword and all the land within the limits of which a cock crowing at a . certain temple could be heard. From this circum stance the town which grew up in the center of this territory was called Cal icoda, or the cock of crowing. After ward it was called Calicut, and from this place the first cotton goods were imported into England, bearing the name of calico. Detroit Free reas. The statue of tha show man who believed humbug the great est element of success is a stupendous affair and was unveiled with religious exercises and a tremendous dem onstration in the presence of thirty thousand people. Fortunately the coming generations are not likely to estimate the nation's great men by the statues they see scattered here and there. If so it would be hard on the country. Found.
