About forty years ago mania sot in among anronants, who talieved that oar rtagos drawn by kites would supersede railways to a considerable extent Among those who followed this fascina ting study, says Amiturt, was Dr. To cook, an nnole of W. Dr. 1'ocock made many journeys from Bristol to London In a little car riage drawn by a eo-iple of large kites flviug a quartor of a mile or so in the air, and ho often attained a speed of fully twonty miles an hour. It was thought, too, that kites would super sede sails for a ship, and, in fact, for somo time soiontiflo England went kito mad. In ordor to thoroughly understand the action of those gigantic kitos (some of them were as large as a ship's main sail) a certain intrepid John Fahrenhoit no rolation to the famous chemist of that name mado soveral voyages in a basket, an ordinary wickerwork affair, such as is usod by laundresses, tied to a kite. On one occasion the kite was started at Romford, in Essox. It was attached to a pony chaise, which was so con structed as to be easily stoored by means of handles, such as those on old-fashioned tricyolos. In the chaise sat two men, one a brother of the kite-travolor, the other a gentloman who spent a considerable fortune in experiments of this description. The party waited until a suitable day came and at length thoy arose one morn ing at 4 o'olook with the pleasing in telligonce that a half gale was blowing from the west Everything had been in readiness for some time, and after a hasty breakfast, the kite was unrolled, stretched on its gigantio bamboo frame and held in the roadway by a couple of laborers. Fahrenheit seated himsol in the bas ket. The three stout lines with which the kite was held and controlled were carefully examined, and.after consider able manoeuvring the enormous spread of canvas was wafted upward, with its human cargo seated calmly and non ohalantly in the banket. For a time it looked as though tho kite would not ascend properly, and the lines frequently hung slack, but at 6.80 tho wind had increased to such an extent that it was thought expedient to "pay out" more liuo, and the three travelors seated themselves in the chaise, which began to move along the main road at a brisk pace. Onee in motion the speed increased, and the difficulty of steering the chaise and looking after the guide ropes was so great that it was thought expedient to bring the experi ment to a hasty conclusion. This, howevor, was oasier said than done. As they passed a milestone they determined to time their speed, and found to their surprise that they had covered a mile in 2.00. Three miles out of Chelmsford rain began to fall In torrents and violent tugs were felt at tho guido ropes. It hod boen previously arranged that they should form the signal for an immedi ate descent, and, taking udvantago of a somowhat steep inoliao, when the rate of progression would naturally bo diminished, the brakos were applied, i Fahrenhoit was observed making vio lent signals with his hands, and tho kite was found to be falling with alarm, ing rapidity. Mr. McLennan and his two assistants thereupon promptly determined to take the only possible step which could save him. By pulling in the ropes violently the kite would slightly asoend, and so, throwing off their coats, thoy tugged with might and main. In five minutes Fahrenheit was oa terra ftrma. It appeared that the rain had thoroughly soaked the canvas and added pounds to the weight of the kite, causing it to fall.
