Crisman Bros, two enterprising young men are running one of the best flouring establishments in the state, and turning out by the roller process the finest of flour. They are indispensable in our community in throwing upon the market an excel lent quality of flour ; have erected a new engine house and are now running an excellent engine, costing $1500. Harry Grozicr has entered into a new enterprise that of broom making is turning out splendid specimens of brooms. They are honest work, and they come from a man of Berwick. We never have had corn brooms thrown on our market superior to them to ray the least. Mr. Grozier is an old resident of town, and well known as teacher and leader of cornet music. M. S. Freas has been a long while identified with Thos. Liuer's tonsorial rooms, and has become a necessity there ; is popular with our people. G. B. W. Hosier, now under full headway, is turning out some elegant buggies, carriages, and heavy wagons ; is fast establishing himself in his line of business. Lu Frantz is a popular young man, commands a ready sale for all the meat he peddles from day to day. Came very near having a scorch out in Frantz's tailor shop, Main St., on Wednesday night of last week. A lamp commenced to burn up some fine garments, freshly made, to the amount of about $150. The fire was promptly extinguished and no further damage. Miss Clara Sinit'iliiul Miss Jessie Straw have opened a restaurant on Main street, opposite the Opera House. These aro enterprising; young ladies, and deserving of liberal patronage. An institution of this sort is a novelty with us. M. W. Jackrcn, wife and daughter have returned from the World's Fair after a protracted visit. They have reported a very pleasant visit and plenty to be seen. Our Berwick Council should pass ordinance that, there should be no frame buildings erected between Isaiah Bower's store and far down as Presby terian church on Front and Second Sts., and as far as our cemetery, and build with brick or stone, or some hard ware that does not furnish kind ling wood to burn out peoples' homes anjl set the town on ire. The town has grown into this importance to de mand this. G. H. Welliver has become a citi zen of town, and has entered into the Veterinary Surgeon business; has been here but a short time but has picked up a fine trade in his line ; is a gradu ate of Ontario Veterinary College ; has performed some handsome cures in horse flesh. We have no doubt the Professor will meet with abundant success with us. We are glad to note that Mrs. Dr. McCrea, after a long seige of "grippe" and pneumonia is convalescent Her numerous friends wish her full and rapid recovery. The Baccalaurate sermon by Rev. Stephenson, pertaining to our High School on last Sabbath evening in the M. E. Church was fine. The church was densely crowded. Forks. The Asbury festival was a grand success, clearing about $50. Miss Annie and Addie McGuire of Wilkes-Barre, visited Jonestown)friends last week. Festival at Jonestown tomorrow night W. B. Pennington visited friends in Nescopeck last Sunday. Wm. Gilbert and Rush Robbins of Nescopeck visited their parents here last Sunday. Alva Bendig lost a valuable horse at the Asb.ury festival last Saturday night. The material for the foot bridge across Fishing Creek, near the B. & S. station is being delivered. We art infnrmeil on reliable author ity that the invitations sent out by the P. O. S. of A. at Jonestown for a cele- bration and picnic on July 4th are pcing pretty generally accepted. The bass season having opened, fisherman are trying their luck, which seems to be poor. Messrs. II. Bower of Berwick and Hiram Bower of Fowlerville, were at Forks on a fishing expedition last week. Children's day will be appropriately celebrated at lonestown and Asbury, on bunuay, June 24th. , The P. O. S. of A. boys at Jones town have just received a fine new nag. M. E. Edwards and wife of Blooms bu'g, spent a couple of days last week calling on friends in this section. Central. It is now getting very pleasant and every one that stops in Central re marks about the change it makes in them, even when they stop once over night. 1 his is the best place to rest a week or ten days that could be found, and by the way our Hotel utv der its present management is now fitted up with nice and airy rooms and first class accommodations throughout Mr. Perry having . had a number of years experience in the Hotel business, will give all who stop with him his per sonal attention. Jamison City is booming ; the tan nery, saw mill, and hub factory are running on full time and to their lull est capacity. Understand the factory operated by W. D. Davidge, will lo cate elsewhere before the winter sets in. This institution has worked the hub and veneering business here con tinously every since this country open ed up about five years, and have ship ed and made hubs enough for, perhaps fifty thousand wagons, besides two and three car loads of veneering and beer chips every month, employing from twenty five to fifty men. This firm is one ot the kind that will be missed. t Messrs. Shoemaker took to Bloom, Bert Coleman from Jami son who is of unsound mind. Mr. I. B. Gibbons is contracting for a Mr. Ilorocy of Fairmount Springs. J. B. Hess is not gaining in healt h very fast. He has been housed up all winter. Aaron Vansickle is on the sick list. William Lamon visited his son, J. F. Lamon ; could not stay long enough to take a trout fish. We also saw William Shaffer, for- mally of Centre township: He took a few trout home. S. Yorks caucht perhaps the largest trout, 1 lb. 9 oz. J. W. Perry the longest, fourteen inches. W. Brodt the largest number, proba bly three thousand. East Benton. The frait nrosDect is verv cood. The crops have a promising appearance. Candidates would fare quite as well if they made no canvass at all. But one canvassing seems to make it neces sary for alL Tnt now the under current in the pursuit of public patronage by federal appointment runs so deep that the casual observer does not discover any rippie ai tui in wc woi.uuuj cal waters. But mark you, many will be stranded on the rocks of treacher ous deception, way down at the bot tom of political villainy. The old fashioned Fourth of July celebrations seem to lose their signi France, nr snirit at least, ov the ob servance of other days of great nation al and historic events. Thi- rom season has Droeressed thusly some corn is being cultivated, some is not up yet and still some to be planted yet. The crows are committing depreda ?rn nn manv corn fields. The thiev ing birds are cunning and impudent. We cannot see wnat Denem tney are to the farming community. Still three or four copies of the Columbian spread per acre over corn fields will put the crows against trespass and theywill take the hint and quit the field, as they are not slow to read ad vertisements. It is seldom that one meets with a more intelligent, court eous or sociable gentleman. Messrs. J. B. DeLong and D. K. Sloan have both added to the appear ance of their residences by repainting and other improvements Squire Harman and Mr. W. K. Miller, a student at the academy, were out fishing on Saturday. As to the catch it is only necessary to say that we have a much higher regard for the former as a druggist and us a gen tleman than as a fisherman, while if the latter is not more successful in his studies than he was in landing "big ones" on this occasion, he is wasting time. On account of a sand bar having formed at the head of the old race, its waters were getting very low so much so that it was feared that its stangnant waters might breed an epi demic. Accordingly a number of pub Hit spirited citizens turned out on Saturday afternoon and removed the obstructing bar. Its waters now flow full and free as ever. Mr. W. C. Marr, the saddler, Vems to be enjoying a good patronage. He is constantly kept busy. A regular freight has again been put on the V. & Y, and the mixed train feature discontinued. Passen gers can now take a trip over the road without providing a week' provisions before btarting. Nothing eould look more inviting than the grove on he academygrounds this warm weather. M. L.
