Every young man has time and time again hoard of the Kiimmnr girl, and Junky iadood is ho who lias hnon ahlo to withstand hor wilos and enchantments. Wo hear hor mentioned in poetry and prow, mi il at last tlio fortunate ones )by those I moon thoso who havo thus ar only had tlio ploasuro of reading aliout and hearing lier spoken of) bogin to think that to look for angols wo need not lpave this earth but only to look for tho Hummer girl. In dealing with a quostion of import ant we must always look on two sides, not always tho ouo wo think brightest; it is so with this question wo must look at now. To deflno the model Sunimor girl with all hor peculiarities I must leavo to soma ono who may be interested enough to study closely her ways and manners. I have lost interest iu everything con nected with her; the reason I am about to relate. Tho Hummer of 1890 had gono; vaca tion days, which we always look for ward to with such fond hopes and dreams, had left us with nothing but the swoot memories that invariably cling to good times past. . When at college together five of my comrades and myself made an agree ment that wheu our college life had ended and we purled, each to tight lifo's battle alone, we would, if wo wore spared, meet at least once a year to tell rack other's successes or failures, as tho cuso might be. The year 18'JO was no pxcoptiou to the rnle, and the first night in October, the evening of our aunual meeting, cume around. Tho eveuing proved to be cold and stonily, yet notwithstanding, on this our fifteenth meeting, wo were all ac counted for in our usual plucos ; among the hist, but not least, to arrive was Franklin Nelson, one of the youngest, but more thought of by us than any other one. I ran still remember how ho used to look at college tall, well built, with dark brown hair and eye, the latter especially calling attontion to him if his manners and bearing, that were almost perfect, had not ; to look at him it would aeoin as if trouble and care were entirely unknown to him. Ho had a way of looking at you while talk ing, as if he wore reading your very thoughts, but to hear him laugh, which he did frequently, was a pleasure in deed. It seemed as if his wholo soul was in it, which, added to his rare con versational powers, made him so popu lar wherever he happened to be ; but to return to our narrative. As I said, he enterod rather late ; we preoted his entrance with three cheers. We intended to give them with a will, but they almost died on our lips as we no ticed his appearance. Could this ha our Franklin of olden times ? No I but, yes, we had to realizo thut it was. How j changed 1 Palo, thin, all tho lifo i seemed to have been takon from him ; 1 even his old stop had gono. lie greeted ! each ono of us personally, and thou, i vim want seemoil to bo, to us a heavy sigh, sunk into the nearest chair. Wo started the evening's sport at oueo. Some cracked jokes, others sang, but through it all wo felt us if something hail goao wrong, yet we could havo liardly said what it win. Frank laughed uud joked with the rest, but the dullest one iu tho party could sou he was playing u part, especially as his old laugh that we had so much admired had left him. The part of tho evening wo always looked forward to with tho greatest pleasure was after wo had seen that our inner man had been well satisiied, and tho cigars had beeu passed around, wo settled down to hear each ono relate his experioneo. To-night wo applauded every ono aud everything. It needed something to keep our spirits up. Frank's time to speak (wo always re served him to tho end, believing that tho host should be kept until the last) was eagerly awaited. At last it came would that wo had never called on him! He slowly arose as his name was called, and advancing to the center of the room, so that the light fell full on his colorless face, and leaning hoavily on the tablo, as if too weak to support him self, began : " Dear friends aud com rades, we have met again to-night for the fifteenth timo. As we look back on each meeting we think what joyous times they were, bright spots on the pathway of life, like some bright oasis in the desert where the weary traveller has time to stop a moment and drink the cooling waters, and rest, before re suming his burden and starting forth on the weary road onoo more. I have not the time to-night to say all I would liko to, but will come to what I have to say at once : You may all have no ticed a change in my appearauoe and mannor, aud of that my story to-night has to deal. You all know that from tho cradle I was rearod iu luxury and how my life, previous to this year, has boeu spent, after collego, doing nothing but live, enjoying it as if it was somo bright dream, liut now " He drew his hand over his brow, his large brown eyes set in a marblo face, burned liko coals of lire ; not one of us dared breathe, so afraid wo were of in terrupting him. Now,"ho resumed, "all has changod. Last spring 1 awoke to tho fact that my hoalth was feiling. My par ents were soon awaro of tho fact mid, so, urged on by thorn and my doo tor, I found myself at the beginning of tho summer at a small hotel in a pretty village situated ueur our largest and most fashiouablo watering place ; tho hotel L'oiug convenient to both ocean and river, the place being quiet, away from all noiso aud oxeitemuut, it suited a person iu my position very well. Things wout quiotly for a few weeku and then I noticed a gradual improve ment in my health, and tho color cume back to my cheeks, at last 1 was my. self once more. One day a friend and myself started for a day's tlshing. We went to our usual fishing grounds, but luck boomed against us ; we could not tempt the fish to bite. We waited later than usual, hoping our luck would change, but we did not succeed so we Ftartcd for home. Tho row homeward was very pleuran?., wo being treated on our wa to a beautiful sunset. "When n earing our destination my friend culled my attention to a smail sailboat contuiuing two young ladies, in tho center of the stream, where tho current was both swift and deep j wo wero gradually approaching each other when wo noticed a sudden squall of wiud strike tho bout that immediately overturned it. Without a moment's hesitation I leaped ovorboard, striving to reach tho spot whore I had seen ono of the young ladies sink. 1 reached it as she came up and grasped her by her hair, trying to keop her afloat, but the severo exertion I had undergone to reach the spot was too severe for mo ; my head swam arouud, lights appeared before my eyes, an I I lost conscious ncss. Just as I was sinking I was seized and drawn into tho boat by my frioud. "A week possod before I was ablo to leave my room, the shock losing for mo what 1 had gained. One afternoon my friend, who had boon a constant com panion at my bedside, asked mo to take a drivo. I felt able to go aud consented. We wore just about to eater the carriugo whou a young lady met us. My friend iu trod need her to me as the one I hod saved. (She thauked me over and over again. I myself could ouly say some thing about my not wishing it spoken about. My whole heart soeniod to have left me in an instant. I conld hardly look into her eyes, so confused waa I. 1 may say hero, during my life I had very little to do with the ladies ; so to snddouly find myself dsaply in love was very strange to me at first. I mauogod to call on her almost every Jay. tika encouraged me in many different ways, and by aud by I oould always be found in her company, with sailing, driving, rowing and all kinds of pleasures. Time Kped swiftly along, and befere I could realize it the time for our departure was at hand. The hut might of our stay at 13. had arrived. I had walked with her to our favorite retreat on the cliff over looking the sea. Too moon had just risen and everything was covered with its silvery light. I took hor hand in mine. She did not resist. I spoke to her of the happy times we had together, and growing bolder, at last declared my love and asked her to be mine. At that moment the moon was covered by a dark cloud. I think, since then, it mnst have been an ovil omen, but I scarcely heeded it as I waited anxiously for her nnswor, which sho at last gave mo. Looking at me, with her face cov ered with blushes sho could not hide, she told me sho would be mine. The cloud that had covered the moon van ished in tho distuueo and things were brighter to mo than ever they had been sineo, or will bo again. Wo sat and talked of our. future, ami our plans wo laid, us nil lovers do. Oh! thoso mo ments wero full of bliss indeed, but as all things must como to an end wo were obliged to go ; with promises to meet soon wo parted, I to go to my home aud friends, she to her's. " I called to seo her at her homo in tho city ; she always appeared so glad to seo me, at all times greeting me with that fascinating manner that had so eu d Mired her to mo. One morning last week 1 arose late. Afier breakfast I sat down by the lire to read tho paper and Hiuoke. I had about completed the pa per when a note attracted my eye. I read it. Tho walls and furuituro seemed to danco before my eyes. I pinched myself to seo if I was not asleep, but it was too truo. I was wide awake. I read it over and over again, tho words burning themselves into my brain liko red-hot irons. I seized my hat and rushed from tho house. It seemed ages bef ore I reached her homo. I was obliged to wait before I could boo her. Each moment to me seemed a year. She greetod mo in her old mauner, just as if nothing had happened. I could not speak, but, holding the paper before her, I awaited her denial, as I oould not expect anything else, but she gave me a cold little laugh, and forgetting how much I loved her, how my whole life depended on her, sho told mo that sho had only kept my acquaintance as a summer ono, making out of the wholo thing a fine joke. The notico of hor marriage in the paper was but too true. At that moment my heart scorned to break. I have been walking in a dream ever sineo. Friends, every moment to me is ono of agony." He stopped to catch his breath, at the same time prossiug his hankorchief to his lips. There was not a dry eye in the room. Wo thought he had finished, but he coutinuod: "Let my life be a les sou. Trust not a young woman not well known to you, especially the sum mer acquaintances, which are mora to bo feared than any others. I have donu my best, boys. I will now bid my last good-by." Wo arose as ouo man to of. for him words of cheer aud comfort, but without a word ho fell to tho floor. We raised his head to give him nir, but the life, for which he cured so little, had loft him forever. A small, empty vial, lubelled poison, concealed in his handkerchief, told us till. A moro sor rowful gathering than thai ouo of "J.) no'er mot bsfore. We, I do not think, will ever meet together uguin; but, wherever I go in lifo, I will never havo erased from my memory poor I'riiu!. uud his shattered life.
