Bishop Thillips Brooks of Boston died on Monday last after a brief ill ness. He was the Episcopal Bishop of Massachusetts, and one of the best pulpit orators of the age. His death was unexpected, and resulted from a cold contracted in the performance of his official duties, which settled in his throat and ended in diptheria. The name of Thomas McGraw, of Beach Haven, has been favorahlv mentioned for the nomination for County Commissioner, says tSe Shickshinny .Democrat, and it adds: If there is any man in Luzerne county entitled to recognition for fidelity and service rendered the Democratic party it is Mr. McGraw. Dr. Henry Vandyke, of the Brick Presbyterian Church, New York declared his opposition to the claim that the original Bible manuscripts are incrrant. Should this claim be pushed he would be forced from the church. There is a fairly strong feeling in behalf of the new county measure, that is, forming what shall be known as Hazle 'county, from parts of Luzerne and bchuykill counties, be fore the present Lcgis'ature. Barnitf, Western Secre tary of the Board of House Missions in the Lutheran church, whose field lies West of the Missouri river, with Des Moines for head quarters, will be in our town over Sunday February 5, to address the Woman's Missionary Society in their Jubilee service on that day. It is a rare exception for Rev. Barnitz to come east of the Missis sippi river to do any work and it will be a privilege for our people to see and hear him. For instance, Mrs. Chas. Last Saturday nine persons were killed, twelve fatally injured, and nearly a hundred more or less seriously hurt by a collision at Alton Junction, Il linois. Seven persons were injured on the Pennsylvania road near Harris burg by the second section of a pas senger train running into the rear of a sleeping car of the first section on Saturday night. Reports of sleighing parties being run over by the cars at crossings have been frequent. Ganoga Lake, in Sullivan county, is said to be the highest body of water in Pennsylvania, being 25,000 feet above the tide. It is a beautiful lake, a mile long, surrounded by a magnifi cent forsst. The new railroad from Harvey's Lake to Towanda runs with in a mile or so of Ganoga, and the Wilkesbarre A'ecortf says that a branch will shortly be constructed from the main line, at RicketCs to the lake, where a hotel is to be erected in place of the comfortable but primitive inn that has so long furnish ed food and shelter there. Freeze has taken more interest in, and devoted more time to research in the history of this county than any other man within its borders, and is an acknowledged authority on all local historical matters. He re cently presented to the Town of Bloomsburg an old draft, which is supposed to be the original plan of the town, and it will be framed and hung up in the Council room. Heilman, pastor of the Lutheran church, of which she was a member. Her husband and relatives have the warm sympathy of many friends. Not in the history of the present generation has Lake Erie been frozen as it is now. There is an unbroken field of ice from the Detroit river to Put-in-B y. Fishermen have driven fifteen miles out from Monroe and re turned with the statement that it ex tended as far as they could see. The entire Lake Erie archipelago is frozen up and teams are crossing the mouth of theJDetroit river. Fishermen have been compelled to suspend business. Considerable uneasiness is felt because if the winter breaks up as it usually does there can scarcely fail to be a serious flood. Opening of the Beading Railroad's New Passenger Depot in Philadelphia. The General Passenger Department of the Reuling Railroad announces that on and after Sunday, 29th inst, the trains of the Reading Division, now running out of and into the Thir teenth and Callowhill Streets Depot, will depart from and arrive at the new Terminal Station, corner of Market and Twelfth Streets. The new build ing, when completed, will be the most magnificent railway structure in the country. In its present unfinished state it will be used only for the old Thirteenth and Callowhill Streets trains, the station at the latter point being abandoned so far as passenger traffic is concerned. Several weeks will probably elapse before the new edifice is ready for the trains now run ning to and from Ninth and Green Streets. At midnight last night the Blake transmitter, which receives the speech and transmits it over the wire, became the property of ihe public after many yeais exclusive control by the American Bell Telephone Com pany. March 7 of this year will see the end of the main patent on the tele- ; phone that was issued to Alexander Graham Bell, and which covered the fundamental patent on the telephone, the transmission of speech electrically over a wire. At the same time the pater t first issued on the receiver will expire, though a second patent was granted on this device until January 30, 1877, and that has until January 30 of next year to run. With the expiration of the Bell pa tent the Bell telephone business is promised many rivals.
