All of the cranks in the country, for getful of the facts that young Mr. Gould was associated with his father in business for twelve years, and that he had almost entire control of affairs for the last two years, are eager to tell the young man how to manage the vast estate in his charge. A goodly proportion of these would-be advisers are anxious to have a share of the Gould millions diverted into religious and charitable channels. One writer advises the Gould children to build the largest and finest church in the world, as a memorial of their father. Thousands of housekeepers who are not able to use the fruit everv dav. are only too glad to get so good a sub stitute as Bull's Head Flavoring Ex tracts. Price 10 cts. In Case of Diptheria. First, strips of linen or cotton fa brick, about eight inches wide, folded several times, and long enough to reach from ear to ear, should be rung out of ice water (if in winter), and if in summer put directly upon ice, and then applied externally to the throat, and as fast as one cloth gets warm another should be ready to take its place, writes C. G. B. Klophcl, M. I) , in the January JavIM Jfonm Jour nal. If the child complains of being cold, its feet nnd hands should be bathed in as hot water as it can stand. When the child is very young, it may be readily ascertained if it be cold by feeling its hands and head. Under no circumstances should hot applica tions be made to the throat. If the child is ol-l enough, it may be given broken ice to suck constantly, even if the water is spit out. The cold ap plications inhibit the growth of the microbes. The patient's hands should be washed frequently and here let me say so should those of the atten dants and the vessel used for the purpose should not be used by any one else. The patient's clothing needs protection in front. This mav be done by pinning back of the neck large piece of linen or cotton fabric, which will cover the whole front of the child and reach as far as the knees, A material should be used which can easily be boiled or burned when soil ed. The little patient, if old enough, will want to spit, and for a spittoon a small wooden box, with an inch of sawdust on the bottom, is capital. Fresh sawdust should be supplied at least once a day three times a day would be better and that which has been used should be emptied upon good, hot fire, and thus burned at the time the change is made. If there are any flics about, the box should be kept covered, and, as a matter of course, only uncovered when the pa tient desires to spit ; otherwise, the flies alighting upon this spittle would carry the germs of the disease with them, and then alighting upon the family's food and drink, necessarily in fect them, and thus indirectly infect the whole family. This is by no means chimerical, but a well-establish ed fact. Success in everything depends largely upon good health. De Witt's Little Early Riser are little health producing pills. See the point ? I hen take an "Early Riser." W. S Rishton, Druggist. 10-14 ly HOLD THE FORT- This little book which came from the press a few weeks ago, is becom ing popular and is meeting with a ready sale. Ihe leading church papers ot different denominations have highly commended it to their readers, and the author has received many kind letters concerning it. The following letter is from a Reverend gentleman who is considered an ex tensive reader of religious books and a competent judge of their merit: New Berlin, Union Co. Pa; Doc, 22, 1802. K-.v. A Houtz A. M., Orangeville Pa. Dear friend and brother ! Some time ago I had the pleasure of read ing your interesting anil instructive book entitled "Hold the Fort." have not enjoyed so much reading a book intended expressly for the young, since I read in my yonnger days the book of Newton on religious subjects for children. The quality and character of "Hold the Fort" are far in advance of the average Sunday School literature. While style is plain, clear and straight forward, it abounds in apt illustrations and ap propriate similies. A book after all. derives its worth from the spirit and character of its author. For what we do, depends upon what we are ; and what we are, depends upon what we receive ; and what we receive, de pends upon our fellowship with Christ, As some pious soul has expressed the idea in more touching and beautiful language. 1 he help which is done upon earth, Christ doeth it all Him self." The heart acquaintance of the author with Christ is the best reputa tion for "Hold the tort, and this is the reason why I should like to see the work commented noon from the pulpit, and the work introduced in every Sunday Shool and family in the Church. Home has been truly styled the vestibule of Heaven. Home is the mother's place, where she holds eternal vigilance over her children. Here character is built, here she keeps the boys and girls close to her love so as to save them from soirow and shame afterwards ! What better books could a mother select than this to read, and to interpret its principles in her family. I would cheerfully recommend it to every good mother, for it wisely covers all the religious subjects her children should be informed on. Yours very gratefully. S. Sidney Kohler The size of the book is 16 mo. and contains 165 pages and sells at the low price of socts postpaid. The book is neatly bound in cloth and is copyrighted. it can be obtained direct from the author, or at W. H. Brooke & Co. Bloomsburg, Pa.
