The following letter explains the views of Congressman Wolverton on the question of free coinage : House of Representatives, Washington, I). C. March to, 1S01. Dear Sir ; Enclosed find copy of House Bill 44 j6 known as the Bland Silver Bill. I will also send you some of the current literature pertaining to this discussion. The opposition to this bill is not because those opposed to it are opposed to bi metallism, or to gold and silver coin, but because in another form it is simply protection to the silver mine owner, who is pres umed to be, and generally is, of the wealthiest class in the silver produc ing districts of this country. In other words because it enables a man who owns the bullion to walk in to the mint with seventy cents worth of silver and come out with it stamp ed worth a dollar, and go out on the streets and employ a laboring man and give him the same seventy cents wortlifor a dollar's worth of labor, and in this way place in his pocket thirty cents' worth of the tamer's money. At the present price of silver thirty cents of such a dollar, or thirty per cent, would be simply fiat money. If by means of an International Congress some stand. ltd could be made to make the cold and silver dollar equal in value, there would be no objection in coining all the silver in the world into money, but to coin the Bland dollar under this bill is simply giving the silver bullion owner thirty per cent of protection in an indi rect nianner, which it seems to me wou'd inevitably draw from this country all the gold and make our only money the Bland silver dollar.
