A meeting of the Democratic Standing Committee will be held on Saturday, February 6th, 1892, at a o'clock p. m., at the F.xchange Hotel, Bloomsburg, for the purpose of elect ing delegates to the State Convention, and for the transaction of such other business as may properly come before the Convention. Jno. R. Townsend, Co. Chairman. Jas. H. Mercer, Secretary. The state Supreme Court has re fused a petition for permission to file a bill in equity attacking the cons titutionality of the new election law of 1 89 1, on the ground that it has not the original jurisdiction. DELEG A.TE-AT-L AfiQE. The Democratic State Convention will name four persons as delegates-at-large to the National Democratic Con vention which meets in Chicago in June. We know of no man better fitted for the place than D. C. Dewitt, Esq., of Bradford county. He is a staunch Democrat, knows what he be lieves, and believes what he knows, and is never afraid to tell it in public or private. He made the speech in the convention last year placing Mc Sparran in nomination for Auditor General. In 1888 he was sent to Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York and other states, by the National Democratic Committee, and made speeches for five weeks during the Presidential campaign, and wherever he spoke there was a change in the vote in favor of the Democrats. He is a forcible speaker, strong in argu ment, and full of humor; a man of un blemished character and reputation. Last year he was called upon by the State Committee and at their request travelled over the entire State with the Democratic candidates, Wright and Tilden, and made speeches in tearly every county. For his services le never asked anything more than 'is expenses. Let's send him to the national Convention. WASEINGIPfl LETTE2 "Washington, Feb. 1, 1S92. The administration haying by means not altogether satisfactory to those who place American patriotism above the political aggran disement of any one man, secured a satisfactory settlement of the Chilian imbroglio, it is now the turn of the people, represented by the democrats in the House ot Represen tatives, to obtain a satisfactory settle ment with the administration. The mere suspicion that Mr. Harrison and Mr. Blaine have dared to bring the country unnecessarily to the very verge of war in their rivalry for the republi can Presidential nomination, is of itself disgraceful to the party, which they both represent. It has not yet been determined what, if any action will be taken by the House. There is a strong feeling in favnrnf the House cornT.ittee on For eign Affairs making an investigation of the matter, m order to ascertain wnetn er there is any real ground for the sus picion so generally entertained, that the sending of the ultimatum to Chili was an unnecessary Dit 01 DuncomDe to boom Mr. Benjamin Harrison. Should the committee decide to call upon Mr. Blaine for his testimony, some interesting developments may be -expected. -It may be, however, that shame for the position which the result of such an investigation might place the United States in before the nations of the world, will prevent the investi gation being officially made. Mr. Blaine and Senor Montt, the Chilian Minister, "do not speak as they pass by," owing to Montt having made statements seriously reflecting upon the veracity of Mr. Blaine. It will not be surprising if Senor Montt shall conclude that he doesn't care to remain in Washington. Mr. Fgan may also come home from Chili before long. Mr. Harrison has invited Montt to the diplomatic dinner to be given Tuesday. Representative Sherman Hoar's res olution, providing for an investigation of the "sweating system" of tenement house labor, will be favorably reported from the Committee on Manufactures, and it is almost certain to pass the Hmisi Evervbodv is interested in as certaining whether the charges that rlothinflr and other articles of general lse, are manufactured in tenement louses in the large cities which are ppVincr with nestilential diseases, and t is believed that an investigation will In it-. The international American banking scheme, which was before the last Con gress, is in the ring again, a bill having been introduced for the incorporation of such a bank, with a capital of $5 000,000, which may be increased to 25,000,000. The incorporators named are nearly all well known millionaires. As far as it may be done by the Ways and Means Committee, the tariff policy of the House has been agreed upon, the democrats of that committee having decided by a vote of seven to three that it would report a series of separate tariff bills, instead of one gen eral bill. There are still a number of prominent and influential members of the House who believe that this mat ter should be discussed in caucus be fore being finally decided. There is to be a caucus next Friday night, but as that was called especially to discuss the silver question, it is not probable that it will take up anything else, al though something may be said about the feasibility of the caucus electing a 'steering" committee of fifteen, which shall have entire charge of everything and settle just what Khali be done and what shall be left undone at the pres ent session. Mich can be said both for and against this last idea. Representatives of the Deep Water way convention recently held at De troit, made arguments before a joint session of the Senate Committee on Commerce and the House committee on Rivers and Harbors, Saturday, in favor of the construction of a great waterway from Duluth to the sea, via the great lakes and the Krie canal. The estimated cost of the work is $3, 394,000, and the time to complete it from four to six years. The House committee on the Elec tion of President and Vice-President, has decided to favorably report a bill providing a constitutional amendment for the election of U. S. Senators by the people. The House Judiciary committee has decided that Representative Wat son's resolution, for the investigation of the Pinkerton Detective agencies, would infringe the rights of the several States, consequently it will be unfavor ably reported The Alliance mem bers say they will make a fight for the resolution on the floor of the House. The democrats of the House will probably adopt the new rules early this week, nearly all of last week hav ing been devoted to debate on them and amendments offered thereto. The caucus Saturday night after an expla nation from Speaker Crisp endorsed the rules as reported from the commit tee. The protracted meeting at thj M. E. Church closed on Friday nicht. Al though there were none added to the church, yet it seems there was a very good attendance, and a great deal of interest manifested. The pastor, Rev. S. P. Boone, is undoubtedly, a very earnest worker and it is to be hoped that much good may result from his labors at this place. Mr. F. P. Grover, intends to rent his farm in the spring and move to town. He is one of our best farmers and we will miss him. Several from this place are going to attend the Union Revival meetings at Bloomsburg. Mr. C. Mensinger moved in his new house on Tuesday. He had intended to move several weeks ago, but was unable to do so, on account of the serious illness of his wife. A Sunday school convention will be here on the 17th of this month. I We have not had much sleighing i uus winter et, Dut what we had was nsed and highly appreciated by all. At the present writing the snow has nearly all disappeared, but there is plenty of mud to take its place. 1 he coon could see his shadow on Tuesday so there will be six weeks of cold weather et, if old prophecies still hold tiue. According to that we may expect to get several sleighndes yet. I he farmers of this community met in the school house at this place on I uesday evening the 2 inst., and after electing Mr. J. W. Shuman as chair man.were very ably addressed by Mr. . 1. Ailman, state lecturer of the Grange. In the course of his remarks he said the Grange had a great deal to do with raising the state appropri ation to the present five million doll ars for school purposes. After the lecture the grange was reorganized. . Ayer s aarsaparilia purines the bio xi, and expels all poisonous elements. Sold by druggists. University Extension and the Young Man's Christian Association. The reason why the Young Men's Christian Association should co-operate in University Extension, may be snm med up under two heads. The first is because it has the facilities for doing the work Three things are considered important in the establishment of a local centre for the extension of Um- ersity Teaching, viz : An existing organization of some kind to afford a nucleus of attendance; a suitable hall or rooms for lectures and classes; and reference libraries, or conveniences for handling books. The Association possesses these requisites. In the second place University Extension, being clearly a movement, of the highest public good, and placing educational privileges heretofore denied them, within reach of multitudes of young men, the Association should gladly co-operate with it on these accounts, it should do so to that extent that will not interfere with its other work, or diminish what it offers to young men. This I take to be the only limitations upon it. The Association aims to give to the world, as a final product of its work, a young man, intellectual as well as spiritual; and there seems no reason why its co operation with University Extension s'lould not prove a union of forces that will greatly advance its efforts to realize this high ideal of an all-around man.
