Chapter a: Take Hood's Sarsaparilla. Chapter 3 : Strong, cheerful, hungry. The Washingtonville Fair is having a damp time of it this week. If the rains of this week were in tended for the equinoctial storm, it was about a month overdue. No fictitious certificates, but solid facts, testify the marvelous cures by Aycr's Sarsaparilla. W. C. Frick & Co., of Danville ex hibited a f.ne display of ladies' coats, dress goods, gloves, trimmings &c, at the Fair. This is a pushing firm and they have a big trade from this county because they advertise in the Colum bian. Kshleman & Wolf had a fine display of agricultural implements at the fair. They are progressive men, and they made their best efforts to show the good qualities of the excellent ma chines they sell. They also had a display of single and double heaters which attracted much attention. Mr. Peacock was insured in three companies and this was the first money paid to the beneficiary I heartily recommend the Travellers of Hartford as one of the best of the old line companies and in my opinion no one will make a mistake by secur ing insurance in this company through J. Invisible to the naked eye, the poisonous part of this army is the cause of four fifths of all the disease of human family they destroy more lives than war, famine, fire, murder and shipwreck combined, and they actually abbreviate the average term of human life by three-fourths. The way to re lieve the human body of these microbes is to take Swift's Specific. When this medicine gets well into the system the poisonous germ must leave he cannot exist there, hence he seeks an exit through tht pores of the skin. After he departs, a continued use of the Specific will force out the poison, and the patient is well. Treatise on Blood and 8kln diseases mulled life. HWIKT HPKCIr'lC CO., AUuntll, Ua. Wright, and A L Tilden, Democratic candidates for Auditor General and State Treasurer, came to Bloomsburg at noon, last week Thurs day. They were accompanied by Hon. John H. Fow of Philadelphia, and D. C. Dewitt Esq. of Towanda. The party was met at the depot by chairman J. R. Townscnd, and a committee con sisting of Judge Ikcler, Judge Millard, Col. Freeze, William Chrisman, Sup erintendent Johnston, Geo. E. Elwell, J. H. Mercer, W. F. Bodine, and others, and driven to the Exchange Hotel where they dined. At two o'clock they went to the Fair, and were introduced to as many people as pos sible in the limited time. In the evening a meeting was held in the Court House, and although but short notice was given, and several entertainments were going on in town the room was well filled. The meeting was called to order by Chairman Townsend, and Cel. Freeze was elected President. The following Vice Presidents were chosen, Judge Murphy, Orvis Mc Henry, I. S. Kuhn, W. A. Kile, Hugh (uick and Robert I Iowcll. J. H. Mercer, R. Buckingham and Fred Ikcler were elected Secretaries. Excellent speeches were made by Messrs. Tilden, Wright, Dewitt and Fow. The only speaker who referred to the constitutional convention was Mr. De witt, and he favored it. He is a candi date for delegate to the convention from Bradford county. His whole speech was full of humor, and like all the others, was loudly applauded. Mr. Wright declared unequivocally in favor of equal taxation, and Mr. Fow talked about the work of the legislative investigating committee, of which he is an active and able member. The candidates left an excellent impression upon all whom they met. No Matter How Hard any druggist tries to sell you his own cough medicine, remember he does it because he makes more money on it. The shades of night were railing fast As through our village streets there passed A man, who onihis shoulders bore A ladder, and with it fell o'er Into the mud For he had whiskey in his brain, And as he staggered thro' the rain. The Harrison crowd have been shaken up from center to circumfer ence by Mr. Blame's 'letter explaining his position in relation to the Mc Kin Icy tariff bill. They appear to regard the letter as Mr. Blames pronuncia mcnto. issued to inform his special friends and followers that he is still in the political ring. And if republican opinion here is a fair reflection of it elsewhere, it looks very much like a gigantic Blaine boom was about to be launched on the country, and that Bre'r Harrison was to be crowded out of the hurrah, if such a thing can be done. One thing is very certain, Mr. Blaine's letter, which contains about nine parts endorsement of the Blaine reciprocity idea to one of the McKinby tariff act, is not the work of a sick man, but of a very shrewd wide-a ivake politician who is more intent upon pushing his own fortunes than upon helping McKinley. The fact is that Mr. Blaine will never forgive Maj. McKinley for snubbing him by ignoring every suggestion he made when the original McKinley bill was being constructed, and while he is too strict a party man to oppose Mc Kinley's election he would not grieve any to see him defeated. The officials of the State department are apparently never so happy aswhen deceiving the public. After repeated ly denying that our minister to China, who by the way happens to be a good democrat Gen. Denvy, of Indiana had been instructed to join with the powers in the recent demand made up on China for the protection of foreign ers resident in that country, they now acknowledge that such instructions were sent to him some time ago. There may be times when these officials would be justified in temporarily keep ing knowledge in their possession from the public, but there is never any time when misstatements by officials are jus tifiable, and least of all are they justi fiable in this case, which may involve the country in war. Civil Service Commissioner Roose velt is again at his desk, and he is ap parently trying to prevent the clerks in the government service from being bulldozed into giving up their money to political collectors. He says he in tends to have a bill introduced in the next Congress to make it a crime to send circulars to office-holders asking them to make political contributions. Mr. Roosevelt may be perfectly honest, but he should not have prolonged his vacation until the departments had been "worked" if he really wished to put a stop to this evil. Mr. Harrison made an excellent short speech on International arbitra tion to the Methodist Ecumenical Conference Saturday. Secretaries No ble and Foster also made speeches. ; Representatives Mills and Crisp, the rivals for the Speakership, spent sev eral days resting in Washington last week. They have both gone to fill campaign engagements, Mr. Mills to Massachusetts and Mr. Crisp to Ohio. The friends of both of these gentlemep claim their man to be in the lead in the Speakership contest, although ac knowledging that neither have enough votes to nominate, and there is more bad feeling shown by some of their followers than should exist in a friend ly campaign. If this is not eliminated, there is a probability that neither of them will receive the nomination. There is a rumor that Mr. Harrison is trying to make some sort of a com bination to secure the support of Gen. Russel A. Alger, who is now in Wash ington, it is said, by request of Mr. Harrison. It seems queer to see so much trouble being taken to capture an empty honor. A special train carried a large crowd of Washington people to the funeral of the late Representative W. H. 1 Lee, which took place Saturday after noon at his late residence, Raventworth, James M. Townsend, the Indi ana colored clergyman who was in 1889 made Recorder of the General Land Office, has resigned, for the purpose of returning to Indiana. It was at first rumored that the tolored preacher politician was going back home to fight Harrison's renomination, but the fact has now leaked out that he goes at the special request of Mr. Harrison, to see if he cannot quell the anti-Harrison feeling which has of late shown itself to be rather strong among the colored voters of that State, as it would seriously interfere with the Har rison programme to have it stated up on the floor of the republican national convention that any considerable body of voters in his own state were opposed to his renomination. The Court of Claims meets next Monday, a-d it is expected that the vacancy on it3 bench will be filled this week. There are f jw, if any officials in the Pension Office who believe that Gen. Raum will ever resume his position at the head of that bureau. It is thought that his resignation would have been announced before this but for the diffi culty in obtaining his successor. The great success of the Royal Bak ing Powder is due to the extreme care exercised by its manufacturers to make it entirely pure, uniform in quality, and of the highest leavening power. All the scientific knowledge, care and skill, attained by a twenty years' prac tical experience are contributed toward this end, and no pharmaceutical prep aration can be dispensed with a great er accuracy, precision and exactness. Every article used is absolutely pure. A number of chemists are employed to test the strength of each ingredient, so that its exact power and effect in com bination with its co-ingredients is defi nitely known. Nothing is trusted to chance, and no person is employed in the preparation of the materials used or the manufacture of the powder, who is not an expert in his particular branch of the business. As a consequence, the Royal Baking Powder is of the highest grade of excjce always pure, wholesome and unnorm in quality. Each box is exactly like every other, and will retain its powers and produce the same and the highest leavening ef fect in any climate, at any time. The Government Chemists after having an alyzed all the principal brands in the market, in their reports placed the Royal Baking Powder at the head of the list for strength, purity, and whole someness. and thousands of tests all over the country have further demon strated the fact that its qualities are, in every respect, unrivaled.
