which she claims are due her from the sales
of the book. She has not yet received h
cent for her work, although the book sold
well. The linn is embarrassed and cannot
pay.
Francis W., president, and Henry It. Ken
nedy, cashier of the defunct Spring Uar
den National bank, who were convicted
recently for wrecking that institution,
were sentenced by Judge Butler this morii
intx to ten years each in the Kastern peni
tentiary. U. V. Allen, World's fair commissioner
from New York, has purchased several
pieces of property in Chicago.
It is rumored at Hurlln'ton, la., that
ex-(iovernor (Jeer has been tendered Judge
Cooley's place on the interstate com
merce commission.
William Hessler, of Chicago, was stabbed
ten times whilo trying to stop a quarrel
between Daniel David and Ids wife and
Charles Meyer. Mrs. David did the stab
bing. W. W. Johnson, formerly a well known
business man at Stony Point, N. Y., com
mitted suicide by hanging.
The navy department lias made a very
satisfactory trial of smokeless powder for

Dalley Lorlnu, who died at, his home in
Huston shortly after midnight Sunday,
will be held Thursday in this city. He was
born at North Andover, Mass., graduated
at Harvard colletta in 181W and at Harvard
Medical college 1S4J. In 1H!W he was made
postmaster of Salem, Mass. Meanwhile
he had given a large share of his time to

culture. He was the leading spirit iu es
tablishing the New England Agricultural
society In 1SD4, and was elected its presi

the Fifth Massachusetts district, and was
re-elected in 1ST4.

States commissioner of agriculture by
President Garlleld, who gave him his com
mission and instructions the day before
he was mortally wounded. In June, 1RH0,
he was married to Mrs, Anna T. Hildreth,
widow of Charles H. llildinth, a lawyer of
New York city. This was his second mar
riage. In ly he was nominated us min
ister to Portugal, but resigned after a few
months and returned to his home iu Dos

Dedication of tlm llpiisselner County
Soldiers' Monument nt Troy.
TilOV, N. Y., Sept. 13. The Hensselaur
county soldiers' monument was dedicated
in this city today. The monument, which
has been erected by popular subscription,
is undoubtedly one of the tluest memorials
in the country. The principal speaker at
the monument was Captain John Palmer,
the new commamler-iu-chief of the G. A. H.
The dedicatory address at Music hall was
delivered by Gen. Stewurt L. Woodford,
of Brooklyn.
The monument stands on Washington
square where the public fountain formerly
stood, was designed by Fuller & Wheeler,
architects, of Albany, und built by Fred
erick & Field, of Ijuincy, Mass., and is
constructed of the best (juincy granite.
Ground was broken for it Sept. 25, its), by
Colonel C. L MacArthur. The corner stone
was laid with appropriate ceremonies on
May 30, 1MM. The height ot the monument
completed is ninety-three feet. At the
base tho monument is sixteen feet squure.

gagements, are let into the four sides of
the die. Casper Hubert, of New York, is
the sculptor, and they are elaborate pieces
of art. Above the faces of the die on the
gabled front of tho superstructure, are in
scriptions. "To the soldiers and sailors
of Rensselaer county who fought for their
country on land and sea" is one inscrip
tion. On top stands the cfllgy of Columbia,
with trumpet in hand sounding the "Call
to Arm." Tho statue is of bronze and
was designed by Sculptor James E. Kelly,
and cast by the Heury Don nurd llroiuj
company, New York. Tun weight of the
statue is 4.H40 pounds and is over thirteen
feet in height. It. is a handsome piece of
work, and is said to be the largest piece ot
bronze statuary representing a female ever
cast iu this country.
SHOT BY AN ACTOR.
M. 11. Curtis Kills u rulleemuu ut San
Francisco.
San Fmsi'lseo, Sept. 13. M. IJ. Curtis,
"Sum'l of Posen," the well known charac
ter actor, who is locked up in the city
prisuu here on the charge of murdering
Policeman Alexander Grant, of this city,
was brought into court in the ufteruoou.
Curtis looked pale and trembled percept
ibly, evidently not having slept much since
the shooting had occurred. Dy consent
the case was postponed until next Mon
day to await the actiou of the coroner's
jury and to allow the attorneys to prepare
their cuse.
At uu early hour Grant, was shot and in
stantly killed, and there are several wit
nesses who declare that Curtis did the
shooting. The outlook tor him Is dark.

wood Corning, a wealthy aud prominent
citizen of Rochester, who is one of the pro
prietors of the Corning Brothers' bank
here, hus sued tho New York Sun to re

The woman is now serving u seutence on

Fatal Accident nt Krie.
EltlK, Pa., dept. 10. Lightning struck a
trolley car on tho Eighth street liue, burn
ing out the armature. The passengers
rushed from the swiftly moving car. All
escaped without injury except Miss Ilerttia
Mark ley, aged twciity-Mve, a dressmaker,
who was thrown violently to the pave
ment. She died two hours later. Five
other curs had a similar experience.
Stationer Avery to Got a Divorce.
PLAINFIKLH, N. J.. Sept. 10. The testi
mouy in the divorce suit of William 1$.
Avery, the custom uousestationer, against
Ida Avery, who eloped last June with John
H, Gable, has been concluded. The report
advises that a decree of ubsolute divorce
be grunted Avery.

Dethoit, Sept. 10. In an Interview Mrs.
John A. Logan states that she wishes her
husband's monument to be of bronze and
granite, and that tdio will devote her earn
ing if necessary to its erection.
