Me jting of Democratic Executive Committee- There wai a meeting of the State Kxccutive Committee at the eld dem ocratic headquarters, No. 1416 South Perm Square, Philadelphia,' last Thurs day: State Chairman Kerr had great cause for gratification over the excel lent attendance given the meeting of the Democratic State executive com mittee. Out of nine members there was but one absentee, and there was in addition a plentiful sprinkling of veterans, who dropped in with cheer ing intelligence of party unity and pro gress over tho State. It was different a year ago, when the chairman's letters were answered by a few who came simply because it was a dutv. No "other material business was transacted. CONGRESSMEN INDORSE KERR. Seven of the ten Democratic Con gressmen in the Pennsylvania delega tion were among those taking part in the conference. Tho Legislative Eecord- Three thousand, five hundred and fifty-two pages of the Legislative Record, containing the proceedings of the last legislature, have been issued up to date. For each page the con tractor, Clarence M. Busch, of Phila delphia, receives $4.90. At this rate the state has already spent $17,404.80 for this publication. Twenty compos itors are now at work on the Jlecord, besides a pressman and stereotyper, two assistants, a proof reader, galley boy and foreman of the composing room. Thirty-two pages are being is sued daily. Next year Mr. Busch will add over 1,000 ' pounds of new type to the plant so that the publica tion can be gotten out quicker than ever before. 'I am certain of it, for the reason that the party is united and harmoni ous, and is in shape for the contest next fall. ; The Democracy is hopeful and in good spirits. The Delamater ale- The personal property of ex-Senator, and late candidate for Governor, G. W. Delamater, was sold at public sale by the assignees, Messrs, Haskins & McClintock, There was a large at tendance at the handsome residence 011 Chestnut street, lately occupied by our once distinguished, but now ex tinguished townsman. Many creditors expressed their disappointment when they found bare rooms and an almost empty house. Little remained of value scarcely enough to furnish two rooms, and the whole sale at the house only amounted to about $350, and about the same amount at the barn. The horses had been sold previously. Indignant depositors declared that the house was gutted like the bank, and that, the way things are panning out the property of the bankrupts will not more than pay the preferred judgments of 115,000 held by the members of the family and their relatives leaving nothing to apply on their debts of about $1,000,000. The assignee says that what was taken lrom the house previ ously was under the $300 allowance, of which Mr. Delamater had availed him self, and also articles claimed as per sonal property by others.-.JcwMM Messenger. The most dangerous attack on Greek in the schools and colleges yet Been wag mode the other duy in England at a meeting of the head masters of the Eton, Harrow, Rugby, Winchester, Westmin ster, Charter House, St. Paul's, Clifton and other schools one of their nsuul annual or semi-annual gatherings. It was led, or iu fact made, by Mr. Well don, tho head master of Harrow. He advocated tho abolition of obligatory Greek both ut school and college and the snbfltitutiou of science or modem languages, on two grounds. Tine first was the need of adapting ed ucation to individual tastes and capacity. The second in tho interest of Greek study itself was that the Greek lan guage might be left iu the hands of those who really loved it, and could cultivate it with success to a sort of clusmcul elite, in short, who would rescue it from its degraded condition as the bugaboo of dunces and sluggards. There whs a good deal of discussion, pro and con, which elicited nothing very new, but Mr. Well don enmo within two votes of carrying his resolution, this adverse uiujority be ing obtained by tho adhesion of two of the smaller schools. We doubt if anything bo ominous for Greek has yet occurred, for the English public schiKils are its stronghold today, and indeed England may be said to be its main champion. Tho Germ Destroyur- In the field of disepvery and inven tion, medicine has not kept pace with surgery. That, perhaps, is natural j service surgery is the mechanical branch of medicine. The general ac ceptance of the germ theory of disease however, opens a new field for medi cine, and will take it completely away from the medixval supersititions that still cling to its skirts. And yet medi cine is not without its discoveries. It has long been known, and the fact is now recognized wherever the test has been made, that Swift's Specific (S. S. S.) will destroy the germs of malarial disease, the microbes of skin disease, and the bacilli of contagious and other forms of blood poisoning, ejects them from the blood, and purifies and builds up the system.
