THE COLUMBIAN AJSD DEMOCRAT. BLOOMSBURG, COLUMBIA COUNTY, PA.1 Oalm Briquettes. HOW TIIKV AUK MADE AT THE V. Tho company organized by electing as pro ident Austin Corbiu, president of tho Philadelphia & Heading Railroad Co.) secretary, K. M. Reynolds; chief engin eer, Charles M. Jacobs, C. U. M. E., of London, Eng., and Frank Kelly, of 1 Broadway, N. I 11 mna Knlnuf ATnhanAtf (lUv A Urra X ltVD UVIWn SIIIIIIIIIIWI VHI 111 Li v building somewhat resembling n coal brookor, without tho usual dirt plane, was erected for the reception of tho ma chinery. This plant is tho only one of tho kind in tho United btatcs. A largo number of them aro in operation tn England, Franco and Italy and tho railway locomotives iu tho latter two countries uso mo uompresseu iuei ai most entirely. Tho plant is very comlete in every detail. In order to operate it success fully an engine of 150 horao power is required. In tho manufacturing of tho com pressed fuel nothing but perfectly dry coal dirt may bo used. Tho culm is brought from the various collieries in cars. At the rear of the plant is a sidinc on which tho cars aro run. At a certain point on tho siding is a dump hole, connected by moans ot a chute with a pit located under the rear of tho building in which tho fuel is compres sed. The cars ot culm aro run over this siding and their contents dumped into tho pit. i roin this pit the culm is carried bv means of an endless belt elovator to tho top of tho third floor of tho building, where it is screened, to take out all sticks, stones or other foreign matter, r torn mo screen it passess in to a hopper, which leads to tho "dis tributor." On the first floor of the building is located tho pitch mill in which pitch is around to the size of pea coal. An ole vator carries the ground pitch to the top floor, where it is deposited in a hopper which connects by means ot a chuto with tho "distributor. It is at this point whero a great deal of adjust ment is required. Tho "distributor is in reality a macbiae that measures tho exact proportions of culm and pitch which will combine- to make the pressed luel. Tho proportions boine measured out they are dumped together in a chute, which leads to a "disintegrator. ' 1 his machino consists ol two double Ui-c wheels, which revolve one insido of tho other in opposite directions at a high rate of speed. Tho discs of the larger wheels are about 8 inches apart and arc connected by means of a largo number of steel bolts at their periphpry. The ether wheel is ot similar construction, but small enough to revolve freely within the larger one. This machine was designed expressly for use in an thracito coal regions where tho coal is so hard that it is necessary to almost pulverize it. lhe "disintegrator an ewers a twofold purpose, that of pul verizing coat and at the same tune thoroughly mixing tho ingredients. After passing through tho "disinte orator ' the mixturo falls into a bi i from which it is conveyed by means of an olovator to tho top lloor, whero it is depositod into a hopper which has two chutes, ono leading to each of tho two compressing machines. Tho mixture of culm and pitch slides down the chutes to the "pug mills," ono of which is .located directly above the pan of each machine. Within tho "pug milr is a copper pipe which injects jets of steam through tho mixture, which is constantly stirred or churned by means of a perpendicular shall. The ad justraent of the pug-mill is also an im portant part of the operation. The steam jets must furnish steam freely and steadly, and the temperature, must bo kept very exact. Tho steam heats the culm and mplts tho pitch, and the mass then falls into a revolving pan, whero it is continually stirred until it reaches an opening, through which it falls loosely into the dies, of which there, aro six sets of t vo each. These dies aro located in a re. volving iron "press-table. Tho mixed and heated culm and pitch first falls into two dies, which pass under the opening in tho pan. Tho "press-table'' revolves a sufficient dis tance to bring a fresh set of dies under tho opening of the pan, and the filled dief aro at the samo timo brought over the "hammer'' which raises and exerts a pressure of seventy tons on the mix turo contained within the dies. This operation only requires 2J- seconds, Tho ' press-table'' again revolves, re. pcating tho first two operations and bringing tho plungo of tho dies on to an inclined plane, causing tho plunger to nso and torco tho blocks ot com prcsseu iuei out on mo level with n chuto when an arm quickly pushes tho bricks off tho dies and into tho chuto. The chutri containcs an endless belt of steel wire cables which carries blocks to tho storage yard or to tho various sidings where they aro loaded in cars for transportation. Each brick weighs about 18 pounds and is stamped with tho American eaglo and the word "Heading.'' Tho machines turn out bctweon.-lO and 50 bricks each per minuto and tho capacity oi uiu iwu inuumuuH in u uay oi ion hours is eight hundred tons. The compressing inachins and "disin tegrator" wero manufactured by tho Usksido Engineering Company, of vr,. Af., ....... i. !.: l' "i i The process is the patent of A. J. Stevens, of tho samo city, but is con trolled by tho Usksido Company, who aro tho solo maufacturers of tho ma chine. It requires 25 men and boys to run this plant. They aro under tho direotion of John Linton, who is tho employ of tho Uskside. Company in England. Tho now fuel is now boing used in the locomotives on tho P. & It. road and that company runs threo trains daily between Philadelphia & Heading with tho compressed fuel. Tho engin eers and the heads of tho meoliamcal departments eiprebS themselves as very much pleased with tho result, and it is their opinion that tho new fuel is equal, if not superior to coal. Tho entire product oi the now plant is at present being utilized by tho P. & ll. uompany, Tho peroeutago of pitch in the cow-j pressed fuel Is very small and constit utes but a traction ot tho weight, i ho product has ureal resisting qualities a number of teet hnvo bcon mado with a Winchester repealing rills.
