Two aged citizens passed away during
tho tatter part of last week. Jonas Doty,
ot Flshlngcrcck township, nged about 77
years, and John Coughlln, of tho borough
of Now Columbus, Luzcrno county, ngsd
nbout 81 years. Mr. Doty was respected
nnd well-known by nil our citizens In tho
community. Ho left n widow, six sons
nnd two daughters to mourn their loss.
Ho also left a largo estate. Mr. Coughlln
was ot Irish descent nnd possessed noblo
qualities. Ho was tho father of James and
D. O., professors' nnd teachers for a long
time of tho New Columbus Male and Fo
malo Academy. Later on tlic former was
olected County Superintendent of Luzcrno
county, which position ho still holds, nnd
tho latter Is nn attorney of tho Wilkes
Barro Bar. There nro other members of
tho family, but wo aro unable to report any
further.
Our pcoplo palronlzo tho proposed his
tory of Columbia county beyond our ex
pectatlon. Many say it Is just tho book
thoy want a history of Columbia county
that contains all tho family lineage and
family records. The high subscription
price, however, puts It beyond tho reach of
many, who much deslro to havo tho book.

the W. & W. taking tho Hunlock'a Creek
and Money route from Stillwater. It Is
rumored that the W. & W. propose tunnel

water and thereby shorten tho dlstnnco 0
miles. There are men now engaged In
looking up this latter route. But wo nre

Bloomsbiirg. One thing Is certain, when
both roads are completed, we will have

on all kinds of musical instruments, arid

of 125,000 will form ono of the many

be excursion trains on nil tho railroads on

Supt. Grimes held his examination last
week. The class was small but the exnm
Ination, as usual, was reasonable but some
what hard.
Tho work on the railroad Is still progress,
lng rapidly. Every week more hands aro
engaged and put to work. There aro now
about seventy-fivo workmen employed and
thirty or forly carts and wagons. The
work is carried on with such success that
If It so continues and everything is favor,
able the cars will bo runuiug through hero
lu a few months. Nearly, If not qulto as
soon as was at first slated by the rail road
men.

There was an earthquake Tuesday even
lag which was felt throughout nearly tho
entlro portion of the United States east of
tho Mississippi. It was most severe In
South Curolina and Georgia. At Augusta,
Ga. ten distinct shocks were felt between
9:51 and 10 45 p. m. At Savannah five
shocks, and at Memphis, Itlchmond and
Washington It was so severe that the pcoplo
becamo panic-stricken,
Charleston, S. C. suffered tbo most.
A bridgo leading to tho city was shaken
from its foundation, carrying along all
telegraph lines, and shutting out tho city
from all outsido communication. The first
shock was felt at 0:50 when tho pcoplo
found themselves being thrown ubout and
houses tumbling on them. Every ono rnu
screaming Into tho streets, nnd many shout
ing "My God savo us" "God havo mercy
upon us slnucrs." The first shock was
followed by othersjat Intervals of half hour
each, but less severe '.Several llres were
started and many buildings consumed.
Not a houso in the city escaped Injury.
Many nro so badly shaken and cracked
that a slight wind will bring them down.
