in a book recently published by nn
anonymous author. I have read n
deal of sarcasms in my day but 1 never
read anything equal to tho sarcasm
herein contained. I suspect tho cxpeN
io ico portrayed is a personal one; in
short, tho author intlinatcB aa "iiiueh on
page 31. Let roo give you a synop
sis :
"Malaria" as it states, is thd cloak
with wbiih superficial physioians cov
er a multiludu of ill feelings which
they do not understand, and do not
much enro to investigate. It Is also a
cover for such diseases as they can not
cure. When they advise their patient
to travel 'or that ho has overworked
and needs rest and is probablysufTcr
ing from malaria, it is a confession t of
ignoranco or of Inability. Tho Jialicnt
goes abroad. Tho change is a tonic,
and for a titno he feels belter. Conies
homo. Ficklo appetiU1, frequent head
aches, severe colds, cramps, sleepless'1
ness, irritability, tired feelings, and
general nnfiluess for business aro suc
ceeded in duo timo by alarming at
tacks of rheumatism which flits about
his body regardless of .all human feel
ings. It is muscular, in his back. Artio
ular, in his joints. Inflammatory,
my 1 how ho fears it will fly to his
heart I Now off ho goes to the springs.
Tho doctor sends him there, of course,
to get well; at tho same timo be docs
not really want him to dio, on his
hands I
That would hurt his business 1
Better for a few days. Returns. Af
ter a while neuralgia transfixes him.
Ho bloats- cannot breathe; has pneu
monia; cannot walk; cannot sleep on
his left side; is fretful; very nervous
and irritable; is palo and flabby; has
frequent chills and fevers; everything
about him seems to go wrong; becomes
suspicious; musters up strength and
demands to know what is killing him !
"Great heaven 1" ho cries, "why
have you kept me so long in ignor
anco V
"Because," said tho doctor, "I read
your fato fivo years ago. I thought
best to keep you corafortablo and ig
norant of the facts.'1
Ho dismisses hia doctor, but too latel
His fortune has all gone to fees.
But him, what becomes of him 1
The other day a well known Wall
Street banker said to roe "it is really
astonishing how general blight's dis
ease is becoming. Two of my person
al friends aro now dying of it. But it
is not incurablo I Jam certain, for my
nephew was recently cured when bis
physicians said recovery was impossi
ble. Tho caso seems to mo to bo a
wonderful one. This gentleman for
merly represented his government in a
foreign country. Ho knows, appreci
ates and declares tho value of thai
preparation, because ,liis nephew, who
is a son of Danish VicfrConsul
Schmidt, was pronounced, incurable
when tho remedy, Warner's safe cure,
was begun. "Yes" said his father, "I
was very skeptical but since taking
that remedy tno boy is well.''
I regret to note that ex-President Ar
thur is said to bo a victim of this terriblo
disease. He ought to live but the prob
abilities aro that siuco authorized rem
edies can not cure him, his physicians
will not advise him to savo bis life, as
so many thousands havo done, by the
uso of Warner's Safe euro which Gen.
Christiansen, at Drexel, Morgan &
Co.'s., told mo he regarded "as a won
derful remedy."
Well. I suspeot tbo hero of the book
cured himself by the same means. Tho
internal evidence points very strongly
to this conclusion.
I cannot close my notico of this book
better than by quoting his advico to
his readers :
"If, my friend,, you have snch an ex
perience as I have portrayed, do not
put your trust iu physicians to the .ex
clusion of other remedial agencies.
They havo no monopoly over disease1
and 1 personally know tuat many ot
them are so very 'conscientious' that
they would far prefer their patients
should go to Heaven direct from their
powerless hands man tnat tuey snonia
bo saved to earth by tho uso of any
'unauthorized' means. '
And that tho author's condemnation
is too true, how many thousands dup
ed, and yet rescued, as ho. was, can
personally testify T
Owners of horses in cities have long
learned economy iu the use of hay feed,
which might be profitably imitated by
many farmers. Having to buy every
thing that they feed, city people soon
learn to calculate closely as to compar
ative cost and efficiency of feed. Too
many farmers act as if hay was pro
duccd with little or no expense. Should
tney reckon tho interest on high tiriq
ed land, and the labor in securing the
crop, thoy might easily find their borne
grown hay tho costliest feed their
teaniB could cat. Most farmers arp
averse to selling hay, which is usually
proper enough, as this lias a teudenpy
to exhaust their soils, but they have
no such prejudice against selling the
coarser grains, that tako from the soil
a greater value than tho same weight
of tho best timothy hay. Hence thoy
feed hay and sell grain under tho mis-
laxen notion umi, mis is me uesi wa
to maintain the fertility-of 'their farmi
Thoy should know and consider thai
tho manure from a ton of 'wheat brao
or wheat middlings, contains Inoro o
the valuable elements ot plant foOi
than the manure from a ton of tlmolh
hay. Wo aro not advisiiii; farmers t
soil hay, but a plan of feeding which
substitutes grain or wheat ralddlluci
for less valuable feed will enable them
to get moro work from their' team
mako more' valuable manure from thei
stock, and thus enable them to do bet
ter farming In every respect.

The Wheat Crop.
Tho outlook for wheat this vcar is
not Jiroinlslng. Tho laid sjiring has
greatly injmcd tho prospects in IhU
direction. Winter wlicat has not been
bo poor in years. Careful observers
preillet onlyj about half tho averago
crop of both kinds. Tho Farmtn
Jlevicw gives ii survey of all tho West'
ern nnd bonthcrn wheat-growing Stnles;
Reports havo been received from ovei
Ihrco thousands correspondents cover
ing ovcry wiieat-producing county Hi
Ohio, Miohiiran, Indiana. Illinois Kcn
tucky, Tennessee, Missouri, Knnans,
JNciiraska, lows, wiscousin, ilinnesota
nnd Dakota, which, together with a
very accurate and recent summary from
tho 1'ncilio coast region, made by tho
Associated Press, it is bcliovcd, makes
ono of the most completo reports over
prepared. Tho Jlevicw says: "Tho
gloomiest viuws which havo been ad
vanced concerning tho winter wheat
outlook lor 18So must now bo accepted
ns tho most accurate. Tho promising
couditions of 1881 havo this season been
completely reversed. Tho absolute
uniformity of tho returns indicated that
tlio outlook for the winter sown wheat,
this year, is tho worst in ten years, and
it may bo now set down ns positive
that, under tho most favoriiiL' conditions.
tho total winter and spring wheat yield
is to lall considerably under tho short
crop of 1881, when tho total product
was 380.000.000 bushels. With tho
exception of Michigan, Oregon aud
Washington Territory, on tho far
western slope, tho causes leading to n
decreased output of winter wheat nro
almost identical. In Ohio, Indiana,
Illinois, Kansas and Missouri the
cround.w.13 clear of snow dtiriuc tho
severely cold weather at the close of the
vinter, which was followed by dry,
cold winds later on. Thcro was also
a decreased acreage, owing to tho low
prices wuicn prevailed ior 1110 crop oi
1881'
Another estimate by icliableunthoiily
oc the probable wheat yield of tho Unit
ci States for 188.) places the crop of
winter wheat at 231,000,000 bushels;
of spring wheat, 130,000.000 bushels;
total, 3G1,000,000 bushels. Tho Unit
ed States Department of Agriculture
otiicinily reports tho crop ot 1881:
winter wheat 370,000.000 bushels;
Hpring wheat, H3,000,000; total of
winter and snrinir, 553,000,000 bushels.
From theso figures it will bo seen that
the crop ot 1885 compared with that
of 1881, will show a Bhortago iu wiut
cr wheat of 130,000,000; spring wheat,
13,000,000 bushels; total 152,000,000
bushels. I ho averatro wheat Yield of
tho United States for fivo years past is
101,000,000 bushels. Tho estimate
shows a shortago compared with tho
averago crop tor livo years of 100,000,'
000 bushels.
From a close computation, and tak-
mg tno most cucerlul view ot tlic sit
uation, tho winter wheat yield for tho
present year will not greatly exceed
two hiindrcdjmilliou bushels, and tho
absolute percentages from the inoat
trustworthy sources indicate that tho
yield will fall somewhat under than
over tho figures given.
