ShlcKshinny is all excitement over a murder. Thedeed was committed on Frl day evening. Friday was pay day at Coalmont, and in the evening a crowd from there went to Shlckshinny and got drunk. They became engaged In a dis pute with JamcB McDanlcls, who finally escaped from them and made his -way to B. Crary's store. The Union Leader says ttiat when McDanlcls went in, a man named John Briggs, who very much re sembled hlm'ln appearance and dress, hap pened to be there. Briggs soon after left tic store and the crowd, who had gathered about the door, mistaking him for Mc Danlcls, assaulted him with a billy. He was struck In the back of the neck with the weapon and felled to the ground, when the murderous gang pitched upon him and kicked him until dead. There have been four nrrcsts, but it is not known whether any of those who actually took part In the assault arc among the number. The authorities arc after more of the gang. Riley & Co., of Centralla, was tried last week in court, Knorr & Winter. stccn for plalntUT, Freeze and Marr for defendants. The following statement of the case Is furnished us by S. N. Walkpr, Court Stenographer . The plaintiff, twelve years old, Juno 18, 1883, was in the employ of tho defendant in October, November and December 1881 i at first as a slatcplcker, then at the pea coal separator, and then at the small-Btove coal chute ; having been hired by William tillver, outside boss, and set nt work by Samuel Smith, since dead, under Silver's direction "to ho careful where lie placed the boys." George had been nt his last JIUht UUUUb tt WL'l'Ih, WUCM, IJCUUlUMi;! 1891, as ho was pushing; coal down the chute with his feet, his foot slipped, lie threw up his left hand, caught a finger In a cogwheel, was drawn up (his arm being mangled to the shoulder), nnd Injured so severely that he has still a running sore at the elbow and will never fully regain tho use of the lacerated limb. The defense was that George had been placed In n safe position on the east side of chute on a plank six feet ono Inch below the cogwheel, where he Iwas to push the coal down with his hands, and that he had left his post for one on the west side of tho shaft and only two or three feet below tho cogs, where ho could sit and sco about him. Plaintiff denied leaving the post assigned him, and also claimed that the cogs should have been so covered that tho accident would have been Impossible, citing tho statute that requires innchlr.ery In coal breakers, where boys aro employed, to bo "fenced. ' Do fendant alleged that plaintiff, being under twelve years of age, anil therefore prohib ited by tho same statute from working in a mine, was himself guilty of a violation of tho law and could not invoke Its pro tcctlon; also averred that all had been done that was practicable or necessary In the way of " fencing." Tho Court charged that the statutory prohibition did not extend to tho breaker (which Is outside tho mine), and on the other hand that tho plalntill could not complain of non-compliance with tho statutu by the defendant If the injury did not directly result from tho non-fenelng, If tho boy left his post, and so got hurt, ho took his own risk and must bear the consequence of disobedience j If ho was placed where lie was hurt, and did no more than a boy of his iigo would natural ly do under all the circumstances, he was not guilty of contributory negligence, and might recover. In a recent isssuc of the Coluuhian, the free bridge question is agitated; claiming it should be built at Bloomsburg, on the ground that they arc paying taxes to build and repair bridges all over the county, Ac. Also nsking for correspondence on both sides. Mow your correspondent does not wish to spend time in discussing this matter but will merely give the opinion of some our people on ths subject. We belleye that the brldgo should be built between Lime ltldgc nnd Willow Springs. For different reasons : it Is by far the best site, having no hill on either side, while at Bloom the hill would bo quite Inconvenient. Also immediately at the south end of the bridge at the latter place would be the railroad, which would certainly make it unsnfo for travel witli horses. And why build bridge so near Catawissa bridge? If the county decides to experiment on the free bridges, why not begin at tho centre ? We venture to say that there Is twlco as much ferrying done at these places as at Bloom, Again it is often impossible to cross the river at theso places and wo are compelled to go by way of Berwick or Catawissa, often making a trip of two miles ten or twelve miles. While it Is different at tho cast or west Bides of tho county, they hav. Ing bridges already. It was stated In tho article mentioned, that "the subject must bo agitated till the people living outside of Bloomsburg come to understand that while wo are paying taxes, &c." Wo claim we do understand where tho taxes of Columbia county come from, and where It goes. We feel that the town of Blooms, burg is Improved more by buildings erect ed by tho county than any other place In tho county. Let us reflect on the Financial Statement of Columbia County for tho year 1882. We sco that Centre, Brlarcreok and Mifflin townships pay a good share of tho taxes. nnd do not cost tho Comity one dollar for bridges or roads while Bloom and the rest of tho County have cost $7201,85. So tee hi e helping to build and repair bridges, and where we havo to cross streams, wo build our own bridges, or pay to bo ferried across Mllllln township has ono County bridge about 30 feet long, and Centre, wo are told has none. Again a brldgo at tills place would bo on a direct route for the farmers on tho north side of tho river, to Hazleton Mahanoy City, Shenandoah, and tho coal region market, also from Catawissa, and Maluvlllo to Berwick, We believe that it Is necessary to mnko improvements in tho County which will benefit ovcry ono. Of courso we do not write this expecting the commendation of all especially tho people of Bloom, Wo expect a retort. nlooiu Poor Dlntrlct. M.OOM. East.
