General tho Committed on Lunacy is

tions prescribed by this committee for

also bo brought against them. Med
ical rccotds and ''caso books'' nro to bo

standing from going out of sight.
An important section of tho bill U

fact to bo mailed to tho Committee of
Lunacy nnd nnothcr to tho secretary
of tho Board of Visitors for the county
within forty-eight hours after tho ad
mission of n patient into any such es

and with tho sanction of a judge of a
court of record, shall havo access to

each county nro to bo nppointed by the

There is a dreadful ambition abroad
for bciii'r "centcel." Wo keep up np
pcarances too often at the expenso of
honesty; and though wo may not bo
rich, yet wo must seem to bo "respecta-
ble," though only in tho meanest sense
in mero vultrar show. Wo have not
the couratro to tro patiently onward in
the condition of lifo in which it has
pleased God to call us; but must need
iivo in some fashionable state, to which
wo ridiculously please to call out selves,
and all to gratify tho vanity of that
unsubstantial, genteel world, 01 wlncli
we form a part. There is n constant
strugglo and pressure for front seats,
in the social amphitheatre; in the
midst of which all noble self-denying
resolvo is trodden down, and many
lino natures are inovitably crushed to
death. What waste, what misery,
what bankruptcy come from all this
ambition to dazzlo others with thoglaro
of apparent worldly success wo need
not describe. Tlio lnischcvions results
show themselves in a thousand ways
in tlio rank frauds committed by men
who daro to bo dishonest, but do not
care to seem poor; and 111 the desper
ate dashes at lortune, in which the pity
is not so much for those who fail ns
for tho hundreds of innocent families
who nro so often involved in tho ruin.
The Home Journal.
No part of tho farm is better worth
careful attention than tho woodland,
and, ns n rulo none is so much neglect
ed. 1 ear by year lumber ot all kinds
is harder to lind, and higher in price
when found, and fire wood, oxcentuig
in the newor districts, is fast becoming
a luxury, when on the farm. That this
is true is owing largely to tho extrava
gance, wastefulness and carelessness
with which tho woodland is trotted.
Tho farmor who has n hillside or back
lot covered with trees, is to bo envied
his possession, and if ho is wise, will
bestow upon it caro and attention equal,

I havo had an nveratro of sixty Ply

them were set during tho time. They
Havo never been out ot their pens since
I put them In in November, and tliev
never wait until they go to tho block
to havo their heads cut off. They ato
divided into llocks of 20, each flock
having 100 square feet of yard room.
I Havo had llocks ot JJU and iu mat
ad freo yard rantre, but nover could
get so high an nvcrago ns when kept
yarded in llocks ot 'in. 1 ho cost ol
kecnina was less, nnd the number of
eggs much less, when they had their
liberty. I cannot give tho cost of
keeping, ns 185 littlo chickens wero fed
Irom tho samo grain bins. .My Hock
consisted of just fifty hens in July, nnd
they hnvo laid 910 eggs during the
month, which I think is good evidence
that confinement agrees with them.
They nro provided with nil the gieen
food thqy enn oat, and are given n few
ground beef scraps daily, but never
any milk. Tho chickens hatched by
the nineteen hens wero divided among
thirteen hens, tniiu of which begnu lay
when tho chickens wero three weeks
old, and weaned them a few days later,
evidently thinking it was better business

Warm Slops Indispensible.
I liko ground feed for young pigs,
and warm slop in winter I consider in
dispcnsiblo for their growth, but I find
that it is easy to make slop byfermcntn
tion summer or winter, which I believo
to be just as good ns if cooked, lo
tnako this fermented food right, re
quires two barrels, as in tho summer it
is in danger of becoming too sour, nnd
iu the winter fermentation is slow. I
havo often seen pigs fed in summer
from a barrel of slop ns Bourns vinegar,
and which must have been hurtful to
them, and nothing is moro common
to seo them fed icy slop iu winter. In
tho summer ono barrel should bo emp
tied each day; if you havo hogs enough
to eat only a halt barrel mix that
amount to-day for to-morrow's feed,
and so. alternate from day to day and
your slop will never becomo too acid.
At tho beginning of winter, pack two
barrels in sawdust, so as to keep them
from freezing, mix-up slop in them nnd
tnko n kettlo of boiling water, raiso the
temperatitro to 100 degrees, and cover
with an old carpet. In about twenty
four hours a mild fermentation will be
gin, and by filling first 0110 barrel and
then the other you can always havo
warm slop slightly fermented. Farm

In order to have healthy cows it is
essential that wo havo good food, pure

An experienced fnrmer recommends
that oats bo soaked sufficiently to swell
them before feeding to stock.
Ground oats or whole oats, is fairly
good feed for adult fowls, and may be
given as part of the daily rations.
With every care, and buying much

cult to keeping their farms in good
condition.
Fowls that go to roost with full

crops.
Studv tho cow's comfoit, if you want

Charred corn is ono of tho best
things which can be fed to hens to
make them lay, not as a regulnr diet,
but in limited quantities each day.
Don't treat, your fowls as you do
tramps, and limit them to "cold vic
tuals" during tho cold weather. Give
them n hot breakfast every morn
ing. While tho barn should bo well venti
lated, the ventilation should not bo
secured by means of loosely boarded
