THE COLUMBIAN AND DEMOCRAT, BLOOMSBURG, COLUMBIA COUNTY, PA. Summer Work on Trees. TltF.ES IN SUMMKll TlMK. TitUO 19 always precious on n fnnn. All iimnls seem to Imvo work awaiting their nttcn tion. From thin cause, as well as others, work docs not always get pro perly tlnislicd. If it is thought that "it will do," many minor matters aro lot go undone. Thus in planting trees, the tree may ho properly planted) hut tho little matters afterwards, which do so much to make tho planting a success, aiu unthonght of. Unless trees aro ro planted with all tho roots thoy have which thoy seldom arc, they need to ho kept cool and moist for a season at least, A great many trees aro lost every year by not getting roots enough to begin with, and not heading in enough when setting them out j and then prehaps forgetting to place stones around tho trco to keep it in place, and mulch to hold moisture, and then again hilling up around tho tree, when tho ground sliould ho littlo lower near the trco in order to hold tho vain and tnois turo that fall. It is safo to say that thousands of trees nro lost every year for want of care and good judgement in setting. Better take a little moro time and sco that tho earth is well packed under tho "centre of tho tree, and tho timo afterwards to place a mulch or hay or coarso manuro around theni'to pass them safely through tho season, SUMMLIt PltUNlNO TilKES. TllCrO IS a great ndvantago in summer pruning over mat 01 winter or spring, u uus been shown heforo in our columns. In tho spring time, or tho growing season, tho finger and thumb' can do all tho pruning necccssary. It does what tho saw and knifo has to do later on. Tho tree is easily brought into shapo by nipping off a shoot or pulling ouo off hero and there. Fifteen minutes is as good as an hour in tho winter time. It seems that very many fruit growers fail to appreciate tho great advantages of finger pruning. Pinching tho young and growing shoots has long been prac ticed as a moans of promoting growth and shapo of trees. French horticul turists long ago demonstrated its entire practicability in tho formation of beau tiful trees. Barry and others in this country have often called attention to , its great importance, but yet tho pro fessional fruit grower, as well as tho laity, seem to have overlooked its ad vantages to a great extent, it sum mer pruning wero moro general, thoro ' would bo lower halt dead orchards and shade trees than there now are. Annual Chops of fruit. The man who has a largo orchard, in timo finds his trees bearing every other year, It may bo that a cold storm causes the low of all blossoms one year, tints throw ing all the trees into bearing tho next year. Tho fruit trees aro partly ex hausted by their fruiting, and do not bear the season following as a conse quence. If any ono would take tho trouble to tako off all but a moderate lot of the young fruit as soon as set in tho spring, the trees would, no doubt, bear well the following year. By shear ing off all the blossoms, or the young fruit when no larger than cherries, tho bearing year has been changed on young trees. While tho orchard is coining into bearing, the change is easily affected, and the labor is not great. It would bo too expensive and laborious on old trees ; tho change on these is more difficult, and the labor is wasted. Sheep shears aro the most convenient for the work. Kuocking tho young apples off with poles bruises tho trees. It would bo worth while to try tho experiment of removing tho youug crop when in blossom, and also after tho fruit has set, and observe which answers the desired purpose best. One thing must bekept in mind, that a tree loaded down with fruit cannot bo expected to bear a crop tho following year. Tribune Sc Farmer. The Turnip Orop. No crop makes better returns for labor bestowed than turnips. The seed may be sowed any timo from tho first of Juno throughout August, in many localities below tho isothermal, of, sav the north line of Connecticut. It may bo sowed broadcast, in drills or rows, or as a "cattio crop, among corn j or turnips may bo used to seed grass with, sowing both the turnip and gnus about August 1st. For turnip alone the preparation of tho ground is Minnie. It needs good plowing and harrowing if in fair heart; but a dress ing of -100 pounds of bono dust or 250 pounds of superphosphato to tho acre will almost insure a good cron. We rarely haw such dry weather that tur nips will not start in July, and soon as iiiey maKo leat, heavy dews seem to bo enough to keep themgrowing, but fast year was an exception in this part of tho country In manv- fields turnip seed on dry ground did not ger- iiiiuiui-, or .n mast ma not miiKe any iuuw iiuuvu ground. In sowing turnips broadcast the greatest caro must ho taken to have th em thin enough. A pound of seed to tho aero is all that should bo sowed ana tins should be divided, tho whole pioco being sowed twice at right angles. In Europo tho seedsmen uso old seed baked, or baked rape seed, to mix wun turnip sceu as an adnltera tion. If we could buy hero such old baked seed so as to mix it oursclyes Bay uvo pounds ot uaKctl with one ot live seed, nnd thus bo nolo to make fair cast, instead of throwing lit- tie pinches of seed as we now do, it would save a good deal ot trouble. Sowed in drills, turnips must bo tliin- ....... ......... ,.,, w LL.two t oviuijl:. bad flavor. Turnips ought never to have tho first chanco at a dressing of yard or stable manure, but to como in ns a second crop. As to varieties, there nre two widely different classes, and intermediate varieties without number which it is haul to classify, Swedish or Russian turnips, generally known as "Buta-bagas" or "Swedes, nro a very distinct, hard-fleshed, glossy.leaved kind, occurring in many varieties, that need bettor sou, earlior sowing nnd bet tor ciilturo than tho soft fleshed or ISu ghsh turnip, which is rough.lenved, grows most rapidly, is a voracious feed er, doing well and making a bulky watery crop whero Swedes would do very littlo, and yet it is a question wnoiner ino small crop ot Swedes would not contain nearly ns much nutriment as tho soft turnips. Between tlieso two extremes of hard-fleshed and soft-fleshed kinds aro many varieties partaking in a measure of tho hard-fleshed charac ter of tho Swedes, but generally regard ed and treated as belonging to the com mon or English species. Such nro tho yellow-globo," Yellow-stone," "Dutch," etc. is a ruio it is best to sow Swedes as early as tho first of July, tho "Globe" and "Stone" turnips ns early as the 25th, and tho soft turnips, "Strap leafed flat," "Cow-horn," etc., by the 10th of August, The last named is the best to seed down to grass with, and on good soil, not clayey, turnips nnd clover seed may bo mixed together, us ing about 15 pounds of clover seed, bo- cnusosomo will winter kill American Agriculturist. Brahma fowls. As n class they are more strictly domestic thail miy i c-tlibr, bing gintlo and quiet in their disposition, easily confined, hardy, doing better In tho Middle and Northern States than at; tho South. Tho Brahtnas aro considered moro hardv than tho Cochins, being closer feathered, and tho cocks, having no single comb, it is not liable to bo trozen, which misfortune ruiii9 their npnoarenco nnd detracts irom tneir vnluo in cold climates, with such no commodattons as nro ordlnnrly provid ed for them. Thoy are good layers, and n flock of a dozen hens, with fair nttentlou, may bo depended upon for eggs every week in tho year. Thoy aro first-rate setters, nnd quiet, gentlo mothers easily handled and oared for. The chicks aro hardy, and grow very fast. A two pound Brahma chick cm bo grown quicker thannuy other i thoy aro good broilers. After this it is bet ter to kcop them until fivo or six months old, when they will weigh fiom fivo to sovcn pounds each. A Brahma chick will rcquiro about one-third moro feed than tho smaller breeds, which is amply repaid in increased size and weight. Country Gentleman The Sunday Law. Tho Supreme Court recently ex pounded what is known ns the Sunday law witli regard to subscriptions. Tho decision arose out of a subscription made at a mooting on a Sabbath day and afterwards repudiated on tho ground that it was not legal, being mado on tho Sabbath day. Suit was brought. Tho doctrine of tho court is, that subscriptions for church purposes made on the Sabbath day, whether to build churches, or pay ministers, or organists, or sextons, or for any other purpose connected with tho benevo lent or religious operations of churches do not come under tho category of "worldly employment or business" in tended to bo forbidden by tho statute, but arc properly included in "works of charity, which aro not prohibited, and hence, that such subscriptions aro icgal obligations that may bo enforced by a court of justice. Not an nlcoholo boverage, but a truo and reliable family medicine is Brown's Iron Bitters. BHTWheii farmers can buy a truo Ammoniated Super -Phosphate, made chiclly irotn Slaughter House JUcat and Bone, for S25 per ton at tho Railroad Depots, in Philadelphia, it is a folly to pay out mouoy for tho old-fashioned High Cost Fertilizers, which other man ufacturers persist in holding at prices varying from Thirty to Forty Dollars per ton. Tho past Boason, everywhere, lias early shown, that tho low cost Anv moniated Svmer-Phostihatepaid tho best on Wheat and Grass. Tho day for high-cost Manures has passed. The ex perience ot good larmcrs, who look closely at First Cost and Results, have proved that thoso costing $25 l'&h TON, OR LESS, with a reasonably good Analysis of frco Phosphoric Acid AND AMMONIA, have paid them by far the best. There is abundant evi dence of this and from farmers who don't simply guess at what they are doing. In tho lour years of tho use of much s 525 i'liosphate, there lias not been a smglo reasonable report of unfavora- bie action on any crop, nnd tins is a testimony in itself moro than volumes of certificates. We do not ask for, or publish certificates ; that custom, has long ago ceased to be of any conse quenco either way. Address, BAUGH & SONS. 20 South. Delaware Ave., Philadelphia. June Noted Men !
