On Tuesday afternoon of last week while
Peter Hachman and wife of Hrlar Creek
Township were burning a new ground the
clothes of Mrs. Pitchman caught lire and
before Mr. li , who was some yards dls
taut, could reach her and render nsls.
tiince she was so badly burned that she
died on Tuesday last. Her suffering was
terrible.
Col. A. II. Drown, who has recently been
the traveling agent of Duekwaller & Co., of
lfoyer's Ford, and as such has commanded
a large trade throughout Pennsylvania,
lias just accepted a very complimentary
otter from Tlieo. ICruse, of Lafayette, Indi
ana. Ho has many friends here who, while
they will regret to have him leave tills part
of the. country, wish him prosperity in his
new home.
Tho Public Schools of this place will close
on Wednesday 17th Inst. Tho exercises

The shooting case from Ccntralhl was
tried on Wednesday. The facts ns proven
were that John Lenehan and Pat Murphy,
two young men of Centralla were together
on the night of September 17tli 1881. They
walked home, passing several persons on
the way. When they reached some shanties
Murphy had some conversation with some
one through an open do'rwav, and immed
iately afterward Lenehan who was walking
ahead was shot in the back, the ball com
ing out of the breast. Murphy helped him
homo and called lu a doctor. AH the cir
cumstances seemed to point to an accident
al shooting, and the jury therefore ncipiiited
the defendant.
Through the kindness of W. H. H.
Drown, Col. Freeze has received a still
older copy of a Dlooinsburg paper than
the one In posesslon of Judge Painter. It
is Vol. 1. No. !l;l of the lllonmiburg Hemntcr
dated -May 171827. It is "printed and

I have only to say that a reference to nny
dictionary will show that it was perfectly

phans Schools to the G. A. It. committee
that waited upon him in reference to the de
privation of children of tho privileges of
these- schools s "Your resolution, earnestly
urged upon (lie attention of tho superinten
dent of the public instruction, lins been

you the painful fact that there arc many
destitute children of disabled soldiers,
whoso applications for udinlssion to the
Soldiers' Orphan Schools of the common,
wealth have been received, examined and
approved, who cannot bo ordered Into said
school because the funds appropriated to
this end by tho Legislature have been ex

was held May 3d at the council room,
nil members present. Minutes of last
meeting read and approved. Dr. J. It.
Evans pietented a bill for medical services

from the Winona Fire Co. asked tho conn.
cil to take some steps towards obtaining a
reducer so that all the hosu of the lire de
partment can be connected in case of fire.

inquired what the council proposed to do
with pavements on Catharine street. On

your paper as to the spelling of the word
pan boss," allow mo to say that I have
looked for that word lu the German lexi
con and have not been able to find nny
probable derivation of It, In that language.
I think the word never crossed the ocean
but Is native born, of Indian origin. There
Is a word among the Indians adopted In
our language sometimes spelled "pone"
and sometimes "pauno" in Webster
Dictionary signifying a cako made of corn
meal. I bcllovo tho namo of tho mush of
corn and buckwheat meal In the water in
which tho liver and clippings of pork nro
boiled Is derived from tho same word
'pauno" and thnt Its proper spelling and
prnnunclntlon Is accordingly "pnunoiis,"
