couragement as this. To be sure, Mr. Brown
gets a great many nominations for various
hings; he sometimes runs for Congress, some
times for County Surveyor, sometimes for some
thing else.but he never gets elected to anything

minority county is that the Postmaster's partner
is permitted lo serve his country as chairman of
the county committee, since the Postmaster had
in give up the place at the Invitation of the Pres.

The skating rink in Evans' Hall has been a
source of much pleasure nnd amuseuient for sev
ers! days past. It opened last week Tuesday
evening, and the first performance was highly
entertaining. All hands being green at tbe
huiiness, there were many exhibitions of agility
in sitting down and gelling up again. One
gentleman losing confidence in his feet, tried to
kateon his hands, and Ihe result was a sprain--il
wrist. Another one nearly cracked hia ribs,
while many others displayed much aSectiou f, r
the iron posts in the centre of the hall, which
ihey constantly embraced. Practice has mide
much improvement, and now the floor is filled
with guod skaten. On Saturday evening there
was a contest for a medal, to be awarded to the
most awkward gentleman skater, A Urge au
Hence wis present, and a vote was taken result
ing 128 votes in favor of one of our popular
young men. There miy hive,becn a liltlestuffing
of the ballot box. He bore his honors brave
ly. Ills modesty prevents us from mentioning
mines. On Wednesday evening Mr. Wright
in expert giving an exhibition of verv tine
-kating. Mr. Lee keeps good order and ad
mits no one of questionable character

O SCHOOL DIRECTORS OP COLUMBIA COUNTY.
Tho following extract from the Pennsylva
nia S2I100I Journal of December, 1878, will
no doubt be of interest to the School Directors
of Columbia county!
"The warrants for the payment of the State
appropriation to the school districts through
out the State, have bet n withheld at the re
quest of the State Treasurer, who informed
the department that he has no money to pay
them. Of lhat $1,000,000 appropriated, only
f300,000 have been paid to the present time,
N'ov. 2UL This amount was paid to the dis
tricts that were the first to send in their re'
ports and certificates. This delay is a source
of great regret to Ihe Btato Superintendent,
but the remedy is beyond his power. All he
can do is to promise that the warrants shall be
issued at once us soon as be learns that there
is money in the Treasury to pay them."
The Methodist Episcopal Conference will
meet in this town on the 19th of March next.
About two hundred and fifty ministers will be
in attendance, and Ihe session will continue one
week. Tbo conference is held in the lamer
cities and towns at rigular periods, and it is
custom-try for th? citizens, without denomina
tional distinction, lo entertain the clergy pre
sent. A large number of laymen will be pre
sent, but these are expected to provide for ihem
a -Ives.

TWO MORE MOLLIES IUNQKD.
Jamea McDonnell and Charles Shsrpe were
executed In ihe jail at Mauch Chunk en Tues
day morning, for the murder of George K.
Smith several years ago. The same scaffold
a used on which Hester, Tully and Mi-Hugh
were hung. Only a few moments after the drop
fell, the warden'a bell was rung volnlly, and
on opening the door a telegraph messenger ap
peared with a reprieve from the Governor giv
ing the condemned men until tho 20 inat. But it
came loo late. Both men were beyond human
help. Each one made a few remarks on the
acsffjld, stoutly denying hia guilt, Sharpe had
a written paper which he said he had' in
tended to read, but would not have time. Had
he read this document, which was rather
lengthy, he might have delayed the execution
until the arrival of the reprieve.
