A Singular Case. A curious cae of tuti recognition occur red In Norrsttiwn recently. On Fridaj, November 23, the dead body of a man was found near a limekiln at Mageetown. The man had placed a large stone on the top of the kiln and sat dowD, apparently to warm himself, and, becoming suffocated by the fumes of the carbonic acid, bad fallen, and by the time the body was found the fire had reached him and burned the features be yond recognition. In the pocket of the dead man's clothing was founda pocketbook containing thirty cents and a tobacco box. An no one identified the remains they were buried in tho Potter's field. Mr. William Swaincott, one of the coroner's jury in the case becoming alarmed at the absence of bis father, Mr. Kichard Swaincott, made inqui ries, and found that tho old gentleman had left Mr. Spencer's house, where he had been calling, on Thursday, November 22, and started tar home accompanied by Mr. Spen cer's sister. They came together as far as his residence, and she parted from him at the gate of the yard. Ho had notsincc been seen. Mr. Swaincott then inspected the tobacco box, purse and a pocket knlte, found on the dead man, which he had seen at the inquest, but hud not then noticed par ticularly. yhenbe came to examine them more carefully they proved to be the prop erty of bis father, and all doubt as to the identity of tho body was removed. The de ceased was a temperate inau, and it is a mystery what could have taken him to the kiln, as it was close to the houe. A Strango Superstition. The Roman superstition that cardinals al ways die by threes a similar belief obtain in Western waters us to steamboat accidents is likely lo be strengthened by the death of Mgn. Capalti, following so closely ou those of Cardinals Putrzi atid liiario-Sforza even as but a few weeks before De Angelis and Darizz- inllmved Antouelli to the grave. The Pope bin disproved the traditional as sertion with regard to the "years of Peter," but there i- another belief connected with the Papal chair that it worth noticing the belief that it on his elevation to the pontifi cate a Pop- j-ius not change his name his death will t'.ilinv witbiu the twelve month. Fattening Fuwls, Com meal, as w all know, contains more fattening properties in proportion to it price, than any other single article ; though change in the manner of giving it will adil to the readlnei-s with which the fowls par take of it. Mix raw meal with water fur one day's feed, aud work it into a stiffdough for the next day, and give, occasionally, a few kernels of whole grain. Once in four noun- is not too often lo feed fowls for fattening beginning early in the morning and feeding just before they go to rot at night ; giving ouly so much of It as will be entirely eaten Up at once. Salt In small' quantities, mixed In cooked ford, gives relish to funis' ra tlons, as well as our own, aud a little cay eune should be added. These condiments not only Improve the appetite of the fowls, but give a better flavor to their flesh for thotabl". Give also for the sake of variety, some raw bits of meat auil boiled potatoes, or other cooked vegetables As the fowls are intended to become fat and heavy, allow no roosts in the pen, A slat' ted floor is cleaner than a solid one, and the coop should be so arranged as to have tin droppings fall Into dry earth, placed beneath tho whole. A dark room I better than light one, as it induces the quiet which con duces to rapid fattening. Of course, at feed ing lime, light must be admitted, and plenty of fmh Rir-t ail .imc.-Wiry Wvrli, Young Folks. Hints to Visitors. Try, without being too familiar, to make yourself so much like one of the family that un one shall feel you to bo In the way J and, at the same time, bo observant oftlu.su small courtesies nnd kindnesses which all together make up what tho world agrees lo call good manners. Ilegulate your hours f rising and retiring by the customs of the hnue. Do not keep your friends silting up until later than usual and do not be roaming about the bouse an houror two before breakfast. If you cIiodsc to rise at an early hour, remain In your own room until near breakfast-time, unless you are very sure that your presence in the par lor will not bo unwelcome Write in large letters, In a prominent place In your mind, "Hi! ruxcTlMt.." A visitor has no exctie for keeping a whole family waiting, and it is unpardouablc negligence not to be prompt nt the table. Here is n'plnco to test cood manners, nnd any manifestation of Ill-breeding here will bo noticed and remembered. Do not bo too ready to express your likes nnd dislikes Tor tho various dish es before you. The wife of a certain United States Senator once visiting acquaintances nt some distance Irom her native niids.made a lasting Impression upon the family by re marking at the break fust-table that "she should starve before she would cat mush," and that she "never heard of cooking mut ton before she came Fast." If you aro tempted to go t. the o.hcr ex treme, and sacrifico truth to politeness, read Mrs. Ople's "Tale of Potted Sprats," and you will not be l.fcely to bo insincere again- It Is well to n-m-mber that somo things which si eni of very little importance to you may mako an unpleasant impression upon others, in consequence of a ditferenco in early training. The other day two young ladles were heard discussing a gentlemnn who hajd a great many pleasant qualities. "Yes," said one, "he t's very handsome, but he dot) eat pie with his knife." Take caro that no trifle of that kind is recalled when people aro speaking of you. Keep your own room in order, and do not scatter your belongings all over the house. If your friends are orderly, it will annoy them too see your things out of place aud if they aro not, their own disorder will be enough without adding yours. Make up your mind to be entertained with what is designed to entertain you. If your friend invito you to join them in an excursion, express yotlr pleasure and readiness to go, aud do not act as though you were conferring a favor Instead of re ceiving one. No visitors are so wearisome as those who do not meet half way what ever proposals are made for their pleasure, lie contented to annuo yourself quietly in the liniisp, or to jnlu in any outside gayeties to which you are invited, and show by your manner that you enjoy both. If games are proposed, do not say that you will not play, or "would rather look on;" but join with the rest, and do tho best you can. Never let a foolish feeling of pride, lest you should not make bo good an appearance as the others, prevent your try ing. If you are not skillful, you will at least show that you are good-natured, and that you do not think yourself modest when you are only proud. Fiom "An Agreeable Quest," St. Mcholas, Jan'y, Pidgin English. Mr. A. A. Hayes, Jr., an American, for merly resideut in China, has an article on "Pidgin English,"in Scbibnep. far January, from which we quote : "Chin chin" is n general salutation, and also means wish, ask, or thank. "Hong kong jicfc ' "dowu tide" "loot see," and malee take care," are exact Chinese expres sions. "Some man talkee," Is just the French on dit. The vocabulary consists of ords from the English, Chinese, Portu guese, Hindostanee, and other languages, aud most of them are altered to suit native disabilities. "B'long" (is or are) is ex actly the Spanish ser, expressing quality or characteristic; while "hab got" is precise ly ettar, denoting position or circumstances. For instance: they say, "You b'lonn welly good man j" "That b'long number ono good tea;" "He b'long Englisheeman, mi b'long Chinaman:" but "Master hab not offieee ide," "That shippo hab got Hong Konp side." A visitor callinz oa a ladv asks. That missisae hab got?" and the reply is Uab got," or "Ao hab got." "What thing?" and "Who man?" are eald for what aud ho. Thus "What is that?" becomes "That b'long what thing?" and "Who is that?" That b'long who raau ?" "Larpr.ce chance (chance)" meaning great success or pood fortune, is very common. In calling on his foreign friends on China New-year's-day, the native merchant always wishes him this for tho year to come. The personal pro noun is always "he," cot "she" or "it.' Muskee" (probably fiom the Spanish por ma3 que) meaning "neyer mind," "no mat ter ahout,"or 'in spite of is very much used. Maskeo sendee that money to-day,' 'Mi go wallee, maskee that colo (cold).' 'Man- man' is 'stop. 'Chit' (from Hindostanee) letter.' 'Fo-langsay is 'French, and lamtiola,' 'German.' 'Subo' of course is know' or 'understand.' The Chinaman who was asked why he had eyes on the bons fins boat, said : 'b'tiouc sot eye, can see. pose can see, can Babe. S'pose no can see, how can sabe?' This language certainty ad- nits of extremely epipnimmatic expression. The beginning of Hamlet's soliloquy "To be orn it tobe'was deliciously translated In- Can? No can?' The well-known version f 'My name is Norval,' is altogether excel lent. That of 'Excelsior," though very fun ny, is not quito so correct, except In the rendering of the title word as 'Topside Oalali I' 'Galah' being an untranslatable expletive, perhaps 'I say,' or 'Mind you.' Pidgin' itself is most useful, and has various hades of meaning. Religion is 'joss pidgin.1 That fecsic (physic),' said a boy to whom his master had given quinine, 'largee sabe that ntkpiugm (thoroughly understands ill ufbs),' A gentleman saw bis boy trying to mount a pony, and several times thrown. Seeing his master looking at him the boy aid,- 'Ml wantchee go topside be; he wantchee go topside ml I' A clerical friend urged Whately much for an opinion as to his readineof tho church crvice, and he said at last, "Well, then, If you really wisli to know what 1 think of your reading, I should say there are only two parts of tho service you read well, and those von read faultlessly," "Which ore they J" They are, "Here endeth the first Ietson,'and Were endeth the second lesson,' for thee ire the only parts which you read In your natural voico and manner, which are very vtood ; the rest is all artificial." Pemmican, the favorite food in the cold est parts of ISrilUh America, is made of buf falo meat and fat.
