How tho Women Organize. If is n sad thing to see ten or twelve women get together nml attempt to organize. u 'society to aid the poor.' Ihey tried it in Ninth avenue tho other afternoon, after hav ing talked up the matter for three or four weeks. Thirteen or fourteen of them met by appointment, and after some skirmishin ono of the number called tho meeting to or der and said that tho first duty would bo to elect a President. A sharp-faced womnn got up and said that sho didn't want tho position, but if it was tho wish of tho meeting sho would take it, why, sho would. There was a painfnl pause, and a fat woman aroso 'and said that sho had considerable experience with such socio. ties, and that sho thought sho could render greater personal aid if made President. There was another nainful pause, ana a little woman rose up and squeaked : "I move to lay tho subject on tho tabic!" The other women looked at her in a freez. ing way, and it was suggested that a ballot bo taken. All readily agreed to this, and bal lots were prepared and a bonnet passed around. When tho votes were counted it was found that each woman had put in at least one for herself and threo of them had put in two or three. Tho President pro tern, looked very .'gravo as sho stood up and ro marked : "Ladies, I trust that this error may not occur again." It did, however, or at least each one cast a vote for herself, but on tho third ballot a choice was made and the lucky woman took her seat, smoothed out the folds of her dress, and remarked : "Tho next thing in order is the tho next thing 1" A woman with a wart on her nose, then mado a speech, saying that sho had been treasurer of several similar associations, and that if it was tho wish of tho convention she would accept the office. It didn't seem to be the wish however. "I move to adjourn 1" solemnly exclaimed ft woman with a large back-comb. "ine motion is not in order replied a woman across tho room." "Am I in tho chair or you?" demanded tho President. "Imoye to reconsider tho motion," squeak ed the little woman. "I Bupport tho question 1" put in tho fat woman. The President wiped her spectacles, rapped on. the stove pipe, and replied: "Ladies and gentlemen, thero is no mo tion before the house, and tho question to adjourn is out of order." "Not much 1" exclaimed a woman nearly elx feet high, drawing horself up. "I've seen more meetings of this kind than tho Presi dent ever heard of, and I know that an order to adjourn is always in motion 1" "So is your tongue 1" said ono of tho league end the President knocked on the stove-pipe end said : "The chair believes she knows her busi ness as well as any other woman wearing plated jewelry, or as well as if she had a wart on her nose I Wo will now proceed to elect a Secretary and Treasurer. How shall they be elected?" "Vivcr voicer 1" cried one. '.'I motion by ballot 1" added a second. "By exclamation I" shouted a third. "You mean acclamation, explained the President, looking at tho last Bpeaker. "I don't wear an Alaska diamond," was tho reply, "but I know na much as some folks that do!" "Lessjourn!" shouted a femalo who was born in 1810. "I move tho previous motion," put in the fat woman. "Will some one nominate a candiate?" asked the President. A painful silence ensued. Tho fall of a hair pin would havo sounded liko a hair pin falling over onto a stove boiler. Each hoped to havo somo ono elso nominate her, nnd all, therefore, breathed bard and kept silence. "I nominate Mrs, ," finally said tho President, seeing thero was a dead-lock. "You can't nominate and puttho question tool" squeaked an old lady with beau catchers. "I order the previous motion," said a woman with a red shawl, "And I'm going hum !" added tho fat woman, "Soam I !" "SoamI!" And they stalked out, leaving tho Presi dent lying up her left shoo, and her eyes flashing wlld-cats. And all this is why De troit hasn't another "Society to Aid tho Do serving Voor, Detroit Free J'ress. Stand Ur. If your seat is too hard to eet upon, stund up. Poultry at tho Centennial. A slip from tho Agricultural Bureau of the coming InternationalExhibitionatPhil adclphia, has tho following: Tho admirers of fino poultry will no doubt have an opportunity during the Internation al Exhibition to gratify their taste fully, as it is tho design of tho Centennial Commis - sion to provide everything requisite to the proper reception and display of fowls and birds of every class. It is desired by many that there be a permanent a3 well as a tem porary exhibition of poultry, and if applica tions for space for tho exhibition of fowls during tho six months covered by tho exhi bition aro received in sufficient numbers to warrant tho outlay, tho Commission will probably adopt measures to afford tho prop er facilities. If tho design of a permanent exhibition be carried out, the display should bo such as would impress tho character of caoh breed upon the mind of tho observer. This cannot be done when the exhibition is confined to trios in separate coops, but only by the display of as large a number as can be placed in ono enclosure ; thus affording by the multiplication of individual birds, each of the same breed, an opportunity of studying tho characteristics of each particu lar family. Prominent poultry breeders could readily supply tho birds for such an in teresting an instructive exhibit. Tho temporary exhibition will commence on October 25th, 1870, and last till Novem ber 10th, a period of fifteen days. The Com mission will erect shedding, and the birds will bo exhibited in the same boxes or coops in which they wcro transported. For the purpose of preserving uniformity theso box es will all bo made according to specifica tions furnished by the Bureau of Aericulture. Exhibitors will be required to assume all re sponsibility of feeding and general attend ance on their birds. Only such specimens will be received as aro of pure breed, and even these must be highly meritorious. Fur ther information may bo had by addressing tho Chief of the Bureau of Agriculture, In ternational Exhibition at Philadelphia. Cutting Grass Early I have been watching a grass field since last July, says a correspondent of tho Coun try Gentleman, a part of which was cut early with a mower, and tho rest left threo weeks later. The square block of two or threo acres in tho center of tho field, which was cut last, seemed almost killed all tho fall. Tho grass was timothy, and very littlo after math appeared, whilo tho outside of tho field cut first was bright and green. Tho same result appears again this spring, and I judgo the middle of tho fiald will not yield a half ton of hay per ncre, whilo tho outsido may go up to a ton and a half. The meadow is past its best, and if tho owner is wise ho will plow it up and plant it this spring pre paratory to re-seeding. Even hero the lack of growth last fall roust mako this part of the sod less valuable, even for plowing under. Add to this that tho early cut grass was best for hay, and it makes a strong caso for early cutting. It is equally important for clover, and indeed unless clover Is kept very closely cut or pastured tho second sea son, so as to prevent its seeding, it is rarely worth keeping for grass tho third year. Georgo Washington would havo stood no chanco of being nominated as tempcranco candidate had ho lived In this era. On the 4th of July, 1779, in issuing an order for tho proper celebration of that day, by tho firing of thirteen guns, made tho following sugges tion as part of his official order, to wit: "I wish we had It in our power to distrib ute a jwtioii of rum to the soldiers to cxhll arnto their spirits upon tho occason, but un fortunately our stock is too scanty to permit. "I am, dear sir, your most obedient ser vant, Gj:o. Washi.noto.v," A boy recently found a pocket-book, and returned It to its owner, who gavo him a five-ccnt-nlcce.
