"Uimii. hush I" whispered cousin Ketc, holding up her linger, wartilngly, to I btirtotl my tug nine, in my npron i "they'll hear you cIkcIo." Wo were stiuiiiliitfiit thoilnorof Aunt Jnno's fruit ehxet, listening to the voices of Comln Nell anil llechy Wlir tern, who nppcnrcil to bo regaling them rtulvcs with stolen swecti. "O, Reeky," Nell wni Snylng, "you'll ' o Buro to go to tho hail place, for steal in' mother's preserves, unit then not won WHshln' the saucer." That was loo much for ivt tmvliy. "Know I" answered Kate; "any gooso would know you wcro In here, when therownsu pile of dng-earcd spellers ouMd'j of tho door." "(Jlrls I girls 1 Knto I Annie 1" shout ed .Veil mid Harry, from tho' yard, "If you'ru eoinlug, hurry along." "Whoro? where?" asked Null and Ilecky, eagerly, clattering down stairs after us. "C'omo nnd i-ce," said Harry gruflly, us ho strapped two great bags on the hor.ies, that stood at the gate, "(llrls must always stop to nk questions. Say, Dan, how can we lake all theso girls V "Veil, veil," said Dan, with a twin kle In his eye, two can rldu old Hill, and two can rldo Tolly. That'll do fery vlll." "Don't put Xell and Ilecky both on ono horse," said Ned, ns they came, up Iroin tho kitchen, with newly-washed faces; "they're so light headed they'd liu sure to fall off." So Null and I were lifted upon Dolly, Kato and Heck climbed ton scat upon tho back of old 11111, and tho squad of nutters for-wo were really coins nutt ing went forward, Harry and Ned In tho advance, Dan just behind them, with his hands thrust In tho pockets of Jus tow-linon Jacket, whistling as ho went, or now and then singing u snatch of somo song, in Clcrmun. Our horses Jogged on steadily they wero used to carrying double-and wo clung to them, laughing and shouting until tho woods echoed. Presently wo came In sight of n farm house standing by tho roadside, in n blank, staring whiteness, without a tree to shade It, and tho pigpen set beside the front gate. Dan fell back with us. "Anne, did yoir eftr sou Mis' Jtin cr?" "I tell you, she's a steamer I" ex mimed Ned, beforo I had tiino to answer. "Veil," continued Dan, "If you vants to see her, you can stop mlt me. I hung behind, but ho lined tho latch, sud, drawing mo aftor him, stepped in to tho kitchen. "flood inornin," said he, pleasantly. "Moruln'," said tho woman, whoso face and twinkling, black eyes wero as sharp as her voice. Slio wore ucap with a wide frill.aud sat beforo u huge basket of scraps of cloth, cutting them around In long strips. "Take u cheer and set down," sho said, after sho had looked atu, In si lence, for a moment. "No, mti'am, thauk ye," said Dan ; "I shustshloppcd in tosay.lf you vants your cider tills veck, you must send tho apples over on Vrhlay morning." "Yes," sho answered, "if I can get timo to pick'eni, I'll send 'cmover; but Jim, bo's gotten' in his buckwlieat.and everything come onto me. What with milkin' and cliiirnin', and kaggin' but tir, and tendln' seven calves, and ma kfu' my apple and pencil butters, I've much ns I can do. And then I must lln iih euttln' theso rags, so ns I can take my carpet to tho weaver's ; an' I don't know how it'll be. I work wuss 'an any nigger." "Vat's tho use, Mis' Miner?" said Dan, soothingly, "you'vo nobody to keep but you and tho old man, and when you die, you can't tako It vlth you." "Mighty UUIo thcro'll bo to tako; it's us much as wo can do to keep soul and body to''etlicr,"sho answered cros iy. That was all I heard of tho conversa tion, my attention was so much attract od by u pincushion which hung under tho fooklng-glass. It had fingers stick ing ouUn every direction, and each one was a dllferent color. Ileforo I Had quite mado up my mind what it was Intended to represent, Dan hurried mo away ; and tho last I saw of Mrs. Miner, was n glimpse of her skimp, blue-calico dress, ns sho stood In tho door, clipping, clipping, clipping. "Teary mo 1" said Dan, as wo walk d down the road, "vat's tho uso to bo a vantin more, when you'vo got onough V" It was not long, after wo Joined the rent of our party, until wo caino came to tho nut trees. Tho road was rocky and narrow, nut mo lioris carried us carefully, and wo found elves un dor n row of walnut and eh' : nut trees, so well tilled that overy'wlij I -.hook tho nuts down j and Just liyoud a wtdo meadow, ran'thcSparkllug Cattleman's river. Wlmtallmo wo had I Wo gathered wnluuts until wo wero hungry, then wp nto our dinner, and after that thu boys climbed tho trees to shako down the chestnuts j and as tho burrs wcro ready to open, they canto down In showers. We boon had our cups full, and as It was not tlmu to go home, and as Dan and tho boys wero gathering herbs for Aunt Jane, wp girls concluded to down to tho river. Tho water wns clear and glistening, and when wo dipped our heads It lt,tho drops looked like diamonds. AVo dab bled In lt--wo gathered shells and stones for a whllo ami then Nell saw n thorn bush, full of berries, growing on u rock In tho river- As that was something Htrango, sho and Reeky would go to seo ii, stepping from stono tostnno, for tho water wns shallow. "Let in go too," said 1,. pulling off one thoo and stocking. Kato he-llnled. "Mother said wo must not go In tho water." "O well, I'm sure It Isn't going In tho water to step on the stones," said, I so confidently that fIiu yielded tho point, and followed mo to the rock. It was a pleasant place. Wo could see over so far up tho river ; tho waves, that seemed to run lwo ways, tho llttio fish In tho water, the crabs and Hazards und ono snake, that Hunted lazily by us Hut wo wero not In a hurry. Wo pul led tho strings oil' our bo' . jts and aprons, ;tled them logethei, ..stoned bits of cake to thu end of them with crooked pins, hihI tried to catch flsh. Thu fish did not blto well, and wo wait ed for them, not seeing that tho sun got lower and lower. "0, Atitile," mid Kato In distress, we can't get bad: to tho bank! Look 1 thowutcrlsiMiigl Truo enough, It was running at least a foot deep nil nrouud'in. What should wo do? Wo called to tho boys, but tho water mud 3 so much nolso that It drowned our voices ; and Just then an owl began to screech In tho thicket. Wo wcro almost ready to cry. 'lucre was nothing for us but to wndo out. 1 went first. Oh I that step in tho water ! My foot slipped, and I would havo fallen, had I not caught at tho rock. Something seemed to clutch my foot. "Asnnko! nsnako!" I screamed. ' Where? whero?" said Kate. "There, on my foot." " No, there Is none." "V ell, then It's a crab orn lizard.nud they'n-Just ns bad. I won't havo a too left. I'll drown!" "Aold on, Anna," ?ald Dan; and in u moment I was before him, on old Dill. Strut), o to say, it was neither snako, crab, no.- lizard, on my foot, but my own fishing string. So ho took us out of tho rlvi r, and in a few moments wo wcro riding homeward on tho great, pouching bags of nuts "for nil tho world," as Nell said, "llko the Queen of Shelu." .garwfv's g)r.iavtmcnt. C.ire In Gathering Apples. In tfiitheriiig apples, caro must bo ex crcl-inl toward two thlngs-tho fruit Itself, and the tree that produces it, There has been n marked improvement in packing apples, during thu past few years; but tho operation is loo often bungliiigly performed, even now. Tho skin of mostapp es .sufficiently strong to protect the fruit it covers, for a con sidtrablo tin e, if it remains uninjured. Hut any iii cturo It receives, or any brtflse, however slight, is certain, to in vito decay, llesldcs this, tho appear unco of tho apples is very much Injured by careless handling, oven when they aro to bo used soon after being picked. Tho red colored apples receive less in jury In this respect than tlioso which aro wliito or yellow ; but even these aro a good deal disfigured. No apples, If wo except thoso Intend ed for elder, should bo nllowed to fall upon tho ground, but should bo picked from tho tree, each specimen separate ly, carefully placed in a boskot, and In that manner taken to tho barrel. Tor somo delicate varieties, llko tho North ern Spy, tho basket should bo lined with llannel, or have a coating of soft moss or wilted grass. Similar earo must bo exercised in packing such deli- eato fruits into tho barrels, and in tak ing them to tho cellar. Apples should never bo picked in other than n dry day, commencln g nf tor the dow has dried off In tho morn ing, and closing before it commences to fall at night. Many orchardlsts prefer to placo their apples. in heaps unprotect ed or covered with straw, to undergo a sort of sweating process for a few days previous to putting into barrels; but uppM aro bound lo Keep equally wen when put Immediately into barrels, though It may bo prcfcrablo In tho easo offrnmo few varieties, to leave them un- headed for a few wcks previous to stor ing ihem away. Placing them In lay ers will savo space, and will prevent their getting bruised by moving about In the barrel. It s a ways best to storo apples In a room i hat Is botli cool and dr ; ii iiulldlmr '.Ijovo ground Is best for tin purpose, till tho weather bo- conifs loo severe lor saieiy. v ncn it iidixlrabloto insuro tho keeping of apples for a considerable tlmo they should be wrapped In soft paper, after tho manner of oranges. I!ut It Is nulto as necessary lo see that the treo receives no injury at tho timo of 'huapple picking, as It is to look out for ihu safety of tho fruit. Many fiuo trees aro annually Injured by wounding the bark by tho heel, or by bracing lad ders against It. Nor is It a rare thing to see a Ireo beaten with clubs, pelted with stones, or lashed with saplings. Anoth er great injury which trees rcccivo is that of breaking off a portion of thu fruit stem with tho apple,, thereby di minishing thu fruit propects for anoth yoar. Tho apple should bo divided from tho twig on which It Is produced, at exactly tho point at which It would separate If It was left to fall from ex- cess of ripeness. If it does not part there readily, tho, thumb and finger should aid the seperatlon at thu proper point ; for If tho stem Is pulled out of tiio apple, it Is almost certain to Imme diately commence ,to decay. I'tatrle Jurmer. Cons UuKAD. Ono quart of corn meal, one pint of wheat Hour, two eggs and a llttio salt, with sour buttermilk sufficient to mako a very stiff batter. Mix thoroughly, and then add onu tea spoonful! of soda, dissolved In a llttio hot wotcr. 8t!r this in and pour into well greased pans, sufficient to bo one and a half Inches tliK when cooked Place In a hotoven amr bake until dono say half an hour. Carry to tho tablo hot. If all should not be used, bako over again, and It Is. about as good as when first baked. Half a pint of flour and ono egg will bo very good, but not qulto as good as uiu nuuvu. - Tho sourer".tho buttermilk tho better, If it Is not bitter. Success depends very much on tho duo proportion ofncld and alkali. Fins meal makes much better bread than coarso. u it noes not Keep ns well, provldo loss at one time. Dont or gourd-seed corn .makes better meal than Hint corn. Somo aro shocked at tho Idea of cat lug drugs with their food, and exclaim against tho uso of alkali in cooking, 1. such consider that acid neutralize tlu c-iustlo property of tho alkali ; mid If they novor eat anything moro un healthy than that, thoy will do well.
