Having boon positively assured that deer abounded In tho vicinity of Long Pond, Sullivan County, lu this .State, I determined to bo ono of a parly to go on a hunt. I was strengthened lu this de termination by learning that my friend Major R. had, not long beforo shot it magnificent buck on the mountain ; and tho " Old lngen," Ids father, had shot a bear on tho uno trip. Armed and equipped according to law, as they used to b.iy in militia musters, wo started for tho mountain j after having dis posed of Indefinite quantities of veni son to gormandizing fi lends. Tho road, even tho railroad, was rough, tho Jour ney long, the weather cold, but the Im portance of tho occa-ion and tho object in view, together with tho novelty of tho whole thing, caused us to regard these as small evils. According to previous arrangements, wo were joined on tlto route by "Old Jugen" and "Sam," a veteran hunter, and at Fair Mount Springs, pretty well up among tho highlands, wo walled tho arrival of "Jake," who made tho "drives," and whose a.-,-Jstaueo was con sidered indispensable, lie -lion canu, accompanied by "Cap," a dog famous the country ropud as a deer chaser. Tho foot of the mountain was soon reached, and then began our tribula tions. Our horses were smooth, and tho mountain more so, and the poor brutes were alternately up and down, having no command of their legs, and performing foats upon tlio ice which would havo Ostonl-hed Haines, tho great skater. Finding it useless to at tempt tho ascent thus, we sent the team back, and once moro shouldering tho knapsack and rllle trumped for the biv ouac. If it would not occupy to much space J would give you a description of tho old North Mountain. Its Eides are bar ren and precipitous, giving but littlo promi-o of game. Two or three ledges of rock crop out, and present a singu larly straigbt lino for miles towards tho north. The summit, however, is com paratively level, and on both sides of tho road stretches n fore.-t of beech, hem lock, laurel, Ac., Arc, holding in its 10 eefwos game of all kiiiiN, from bears, deer mid panther:-, down to ground squirrels and hedge hogs. Now, be it remembered that my spe cial party and myself were alone on tho mountain after wo had discharged our team, and very eager for a eha.-o beforo being joined by the "veterans." V,'e had not proceeded far when u came upon unmistakable deer trades cro.-lng tho road, not as "single spies, but in battalions." AVo dashed into the woods with a faint hope of surrounding and capturing tho hoid,ur, to our cha grin, found only a drove of hogs quietly feeding upon tho beech nuts which lay in abundance under tho trees. 1 could not help thinking of one of "Old AhoV Jokes, who, upon an occa sion of being Importuned to have some thing done in the office of the "divine Stanton;" ob.-erved that ho (Lincoln) did not "amount to pig tracks in the War Department." Pork not being considered "game," wo very generously permitted them to enjoy their repast ; and learned, beforo leaving the mountain, that inimen.-e number- of hogs are annually driven to what are known as tho beech woods" to fatten, and hunted by the owners about the first snows, often in a state tit for the Imtcher's knife. Concluding that our Hank movement on tho hogs would'ut "do to tell," wo returned to the road, which is a turn pike, "o called," and pushed on. Pres ently we found tho tracks of a bear in tho snow, ami seeming to us, fre-h. Wo called a halt anil waited for tho "Old lngen" and "Sam" and "Jake." They decided that it was "bar," and a largo one, but it was late, we wero tired, and Long Pond, yet four miles of mountain raod distant. Tho hotel at Long Pond is a magnifi cent stone mansion, would In any local ity strike tho eyo of tho beholder, but here In tho wilderness Is a positive beau ty, and Its sub-tantlal ity a complete lux ury. t was originally intended to makotho place u summer resort; tho puro bracing air, tho nbundanco of game', tho flue spring:! and tho beuull fid lake, all tending to make ita roiuan tleand p!oa-unt retreat.
