THE IV HEAT CROP. —From every sect;or. of the country we learn that the wheat crop presents a most excellent appearance, the covering of snow which has been upon it for nearly the whole winter, has been a great protecSion. sad cow that the bleak winds of March are over, it is generally supposed that there must necessarily be a very heavy yield. Previous to Tuesday's now. some few of our farmers nai commenced plowing, and bat t few days of warm weather will be necessary to ag&ia put the ground ic tolerable condition. The long and close winter has made our farmer friends anxious to resume operations. Implements art being brought out and re paired. and it will not be long before thev will bury many of their troubles under the farrows of sod which they will turn over. THE REAL ESTATE AOEJK T of Dcrborrow A Lsfz, has effected the saie of a number ol trac-ts of land within the last few weeks. He is able to sit up a portion of each day, and ex pects to leave Wilkesbarre for bis home in a week or two. The Bridgeport Kaitroad. T-j the Editor* of the Bai roaa Iv; IBEB: I observed in your paper of las: week, copied from the Bedford Gazette, a commu nication on the subject of the Railroad from Bedford to Bridgeport in which the proposi tion of a county subscription to the capital stock is elaborately discussed. Besides be ing open to the objection that some of the i townships of the county are only remotely and indirectly interested in this road, and that it would be unfair to compel their citi zens to contribute by taxation, there is a still more serious obstacle in the way of this project, to wit: by the constitutional amend ment of 1857, no county, city, borough or township, can become a stockholder in, or obtain money for. or ioaS its credit to, any company or corporation. We may as well, therefore, dismiss this plan and rely upon individna! effort, remem bering the fable of the countryman whose wagon was stock ic the mud. and who called most lustily upon Hercules to come and help him out of his trouble. But Hercules bade him "ay his shoulder to the wheel, assuring h:tn that Heaven only aided those who en deavored to help themselves. It is not to be doubted that we have been depending too much on other people to raahe a railroad to Bedford. And it looks as if the present generation would die out whilst awaiting the advent of the iron horse into our ancient borough. But it does not seem yet to be the time to make a serious and united effort. That time will come when the ConneHsvi'le road is completed from Cum berland to Bridgeport. Then with a fair , effort we o ."fa: to he able to raise readily an hundred thousand dollars, and —uv, that ißsc-h of a posh on ocr part, it is altogether ikely that we can call upon Hercules with some sort of show that oor prayers will be answered. Mean time, it is very we!! that men's minds be directed to the exceeding desirableness of this Bridgeport connection: the easy grades, acd straight lir.e. acd low cost of construction, the amount of travel aud traffic which would make it a paving road, Ac., and the plain difference betwien this and other railroad projects bereabonts which have heretofore resulted in failures. The route hence to Bridgeport has been several times experimentally surveyed, and information as to what it would coat to do the grading and bridging coo id. doubtless, be obtained. My impression is that there is not twenty-two miles of line so favorable any where in Pennsylvania. It is like a West era Prairie road. Miles of it conld be graded at an expense of five or six thousand dollars per mile: so that if the land owners would re lease the right of way, and the Baltimore A Ohio Railroad would pot on the superstruc ture and stock and operate tbe mad it won'id seem to be possible that tbe road can be made. It is quite certain tbat neither tan selling nor trestleing, nor deep cuts, nor long bridges would be necessary, and ihat the road woe id make a safe and attractive meant of iogre* and egress to and from Bed ford.
