' S\ow STORM. —On Saturday last, a snow

PENSIONS TO SOLDIERS OE Iriu.—The bill
passed by the Legislature of Pennsylvania
i to extend pensions tc the soldiers of ICI2,
j will not be lisely to add as much to the ex
penses of the Slate as was expected wh'-n it
waa presented. As proposed, it offered a j
pension to every soidier of lSlff. whether '
rich or poor, and was a gratuity bill, granting
away the public money to those who might
i not need it. The Senate amended the bill by j
declaring that no one should be entitled to
the pension who is worth SSOO. and that new
i i
aj plications nra.t be made by persons tn
i tereated under the act of 1S0<;, by the judges <
of the various judicial districts, and that as '
soon as the United States shall have passed a
law granting per.rions to the soldiers of 1812,
these drawing money nnder the law of
Pennsylvania shall receive no more. The
bill seem? to be formed upon the principle of
keeping the promise to the ear and breaking
it to the hope. It tenders a chary ungracious
, allow ance, which .will be rejected by all those
bat the truly needy remnants of the last war
with England, who must either receive that
charity or go to the alms house. Jn its present
i shape the law will be no credit to the State.—

—V<"e learn from '.he Bedford Inquirer , that
the citizens of Bedford contemplate erecting
a branch road from that place to connect
with the Pittsburg A Connelhrville Rail road
at Bridg- port, l'a. Bridgeport is situated on
Wills' creek, about fourteen miles from this
city, and the advantages of this connection
', both to Bedford and Cumberland, will be in
estimable. The completion of this branch
. road will give us direct communication wiib
Central Pennsylvania. Cumberland i surely
j destined to become a great city in the way of
railroad communications. The Metropolitan
' Rail Road from Point of Rocks to Washing
ton, when complete, will give us direct eom
l munieation to the National Capital; the Pitts
burg A Connellsrille Railroad, with Pitts
burg, and the extension of the Cumberland
\ alley Railroad with Hirrisbnrg. This in
connection with the proposed manufactories
! and our natural mineral resource#, will un
djuhtedly draw capitalists to our city, and
| Cumberland will, we predict, al no distant
day become a large and flourishing city.—

HOC3E CLEAXISG. —The time for bouse
cleaning is rapidly ushering itself upon all
good house vrivea, and what a din, daub, and
clatter they make of it! Such great tubs full
of soap suds, buckets full of white-wash and
pots of paint and varnish as greet the unhap
py husband ca these occasions are enough to
disturb bis dreams for a mouth of Sun- ■
days. The most considerate, economical and
tasteful of hnsbaods, to avoid the reign of
soap suds, white wash aud paint, go immedi
ately to the INQUIRER Book Store, select and
purchase the neatest, cheapest and best arti
cles of wall paper ever brought to the county.
This is sensible. Ladies, you can't do belter
T you want your houses decently refitted,
than to keep a few tubs of soap suds, a lot of
white wash and a paint pot or two in the way
for a week or so; if you can by any contri
vance, best known to yourselves, sprinkle a
little of the soap suds over your husbands,
splash some of the white wash upon their
polished boots, or hats, or daub their coats or
hands with paint, it will hasten the purchase
of paper. Try it, and don't forget to suggest
the INQUIRER Book Store as THE place.
OCR CONTEMPORARIES. —The Delaware
County Republican, one of the most care
fully conducted and neatly printed journals
in Pennsylvania, has been much enlarged and
fitted out with an entirely new dress.
The old Pittsburgh Daily Gazette has also
been thoroughly rejuvenated with new type
and a handsome new make up. It is now
printed in quarto form, and Is in every re
spect vastly improved, though always a first
class sheet.

and entered upon their editorial duties with
lan week's issue. The gentleman are both
experienced in the "art," and the senior has
a number of year's practice on the editorial
tripod. Under their management we have
no doubt the Register will be made an inter
esting and influential journal. We wish
them success pecuniarily and politically.
The Indiana t Pa., Democrat, published
by J. B. SANSOM, ESQ., of this place,
has been enlarged aud otherwise improved.
It now comes to us in quarto form, handsome
ly printed, and presents altogether, a very
neat appearance. Barring its politics, it is
among our best exchanges.
The Bedford County Press, published by
J. C. LONG A Co.. Bloody Run, Pa., is num
bered among our exchanges. Number 2, of
vol. 1 comes out considerably improved upon i
the first issue, and with time and experience,
the Press may l>e made to come up to the
standard of modern newspapers in appearance '
and neatness. The Press is a neutral paper,
devoted to the interests of Education and
Agriculture to a greater or less extent, but
more particularly to the furtherance of enter
prise in Bloody Run.

Our Railroad Project—Advantages of Build- ;

Iron Ore. Timber, and Bark Market. —The
Springs, Ac.
CUMBERLAND VAU.FT TIN March 21.
Editors Inquirer —By reference to your
paper, I learn that the people of Bedford are
trying to connect Bedford with Cumberland .
byway of Bridgeport. YYhiie I appreciate
every effort to extend Railroad facilities to
our people, I think a much better plan would
be to make a railroad directly to Cumberland
byway of Cumberland Valley. By the
Bridgeport route, it will be some 35 or 36 '
miles to Cumberland, whilst by the Valley
route it w.,uid not Le more than NO miles,
with the best possible grade. Following the
course of Evitt's Creek and Shover's Bun,
with scarcely any bridges, or if any very
short ones, a railroad could easily he con
structed, and by this route a large valuable
vein of iron ore. stretching from Cumberland
■ nearly or quite to Bedford, would Le brought
; into market, and the valuable timber, tan
1 bark, Ac., of this region would be accessible.
! and it would certainly, with your very popu
lar Spring?, make tb a profitable
for the stockholders. Mr. J. YV. Jones is
' now operating a large steam tannery in this
! valley, and with its splendid water power
j manufactories might be established and made
profitable. It is true that by the Bridgeport
I route some expense might be saved at the
pre-ent time, but then you would have to he
! indebted to the ConnelUville Road for the
! privilege of using the same. The people of
j Londonderry will have a railroad through
j much of their township, and of course wiil
, not feel the same interest in your road that
j Cumberland Valley would, which is quite cut
i off from market. O. P. 11.
