PENSIONS TO SOLDIERS OE Iriu.—The bill passed by the Legislature of Pennsylvania i to extend pensions tc the soldiers of ICI2, j will not be lisely to add as much to the ex penses of the Slate as was expected wh'-n it waa presented. As proposed, it offered a j pension to every soidier of lSlff. whether ' rich or poor, and was a gratuity bill, granting away the public money to those who might i not need it. The Senate amended the bill by j declaring that no one should be entitled to the pension who is worth SSOO. and that new i i aj plications nra.t be made by persons tn i tereated under the act of 1S0<;, by the judges < of the various judicial districts, and that as ' soon as the United States shall have passed a law granting per.rions to the soldiers of 1812, these drawing money nnder the law of Pennsylvania shall receive no more. The bill seem? to be formed upon the principle of keeping the promise to the ear and breaking it to the hope. It tenders a chary ungracious , allow ance, which .will be rejected by all those bat the truly needy remnants of the last war with England, who must either receive that charity or go to the alms house. Jn its present i shape the law will be no credit to the State.— . Philadelphia Inquirer. The most considerate, economical and tasteful of hnsbaods, to avoid the reign of soap suds, white wash aud paint, go immedi ately to the INQUIRER Book Store, select and purchase the neatest, cheapest and best arti cles of wall paper ever brought to the county. This is sensible. Ladies, you can't do belter T you want your houses decently refitted, than to keep a few tubs of soap suds, a lot of white wash and a paint pot or two in the way for a week or so; if you can by any contri vance, best known to yourselves, sprinkle a little of the soap suds over your husbands, splash some of the white wash upon their polished boots, or hats, or daub their coats or hands with paint, it will hasten the purchase of paper. CORK KS RON I) I \CK. Our Railroad Project—Advantages of Build- ; ing a road through Cumberland ValUy.— • Iron Ore. Timber, and Bark Market. —The Springs, Ac. CUMBERLAND VAU.FT TIN March 21. Editors Inquirer —By reference to your paper, I learn that the people of Bedford are trying to connect Bedford with Cumberland . byway of Bridgeport. YYhiie I appreciate every effort to extend Railroad facilities to our people, I think a much better plan would be to make a railroad directly to Cumberland byway of Cumberland Valley. By the Bridgeport route, it will be some 35 or 36 ' miles to Cumberland, whilst by the Valley route it w.,uid not Le more than NO miles, with the best possible grade. Following the course of Evitt's Creek and Shover's Bun, with scarcely any bridges, or if any very short ones, a railroad could easily he con structed, and by this route a large valuable vein of iron ore. stretching from Cumberland ■ nearly or quite to Bedford, would Le brought ; into market, and the valuable timber, tan 1 bark, Ac., of this region would be accessible. ! and it would certainly, with your very popu lar Spring?, make tb a profitable for the stockholders. Mr. J. YV. Jones is ' now operating a large steam tannery in this ! valley, and with its splendid water power j manufactories might be established and made profitable. It is true that by the Bridgeport I route some expense might be saved at the pre-ent time, but then you would have to he ! indebted to the ConnelUville Road for the ! privilege of using the same. The people of j Londonderry will have a railroad through j much of their township, and of course wiil , not feel the same interest in your road that j Cumberland Valley would, which is quite cut i off from market.
