It is an unusual thing for deer in such numbers to visit this immediate section, but there seems to be any amount of large game extant this season. We noti'e as many as six deer and 1 hear being killed in the northern part f the county. " l niEUAS ST NDAY SCHOOL ANNIVERSARY, >• I LL- -I KG. —We understand that the reg r Christmas anniversary, in connection . the Reformation Jubilee, will be held on -tinnight in the Lutheran Church' • c-llsburg. In universal good cheer of the coming holi - do not forget them, but endeavor to the enjoyment real, by dispensing at which jo have and to -pare, ur.to the tiv dyand helpless." "The Lord lovetbacbeer • I giver." and surely great is the reward of charitable. A load of wood to the freezing • a sack of Hour to the starving may make ■ippy a household, and lay up for the donor, • A HOLIDAY HlST.— Before purchasing arti cles for use aud present during the coming holidays, we would suggest to our readers to consult the advertising columns of this paper. It is due to the dealers who, by their adver tisements, help to sustain a paper which af fords you every week the latest and freshest news, that you should, as much as possible, ! give them the preference in your purchases. SENTENCED. —WiIIiam Gibson, convicted at ■ a late se.-siou of the Court of Oyer and Ter miner, of rape upon the person of his daugh. ter, has been sentenced to undergo an im prisonment of nine years and six months in the Western Penitentiary. Accompanied by the notorious John Brown, in irons and guar ded by .Sheriff Steckmau, he was started on his trip to Alleghany on Monday. THOMPSON, who murdered young McDonald at Johnstown, some time since, must lie a desperate character. He has been lurking through Cambria and Somerset counties ever since the occurrence, has been seen several times but every one appears afraid to attempt to arrest him. He goes heavily armed. Such men, however, though they appear desperate are most generally the greatest cowards. BLACKWOOD'S EDINBURGH MAGAZINE. —The November number of Reprint (by Leonard Scott Publishing Co No. 140 Fulton Street New York J is on our table and contains: Brownlow's, Part XI, At the Alps again. Conversation, Linda Tresael Part 11., Rey nolds and the Portrait-Painters of the Past Century, Cornelius O'Dowd, Women in the Middle Ages and the Impending Crisis in America. Ei'iscot'-U- CHURCH CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION. —There wib be a Sunday School Cclehra'iou at the Court House on Tuesday evening next, (Christmas eve) at which a handsome Christmas Tree will be displayed. Also on Christmas morning there will be Divine service at 10 o'clock and a sermon by the Rev. Mr. Barrow appropriate to the occasion. PRETTY COLD. — On Friday morning last the thermometer stood nine degrees below zero, but as the day advanced the weather moderated, somewhat. A bed of snow some six or eight inches in depth covers the ground and the jingle of the tiny bell, smaii and large as well" betokens that the season for enjoyment is upon us. Rare sport, this sleighing must be, but we are unable to tes tify to the same from practical knowledge. Enjoyment like that is something of which an editor may write and talk but never realize. THE lovers of good literature will find the following leading papers and periodicals on hand at the INQUIRER BOOK STORE as soon as published: New York Ledger. Harpers Wcely Journal of Civilization. Harpers Bazar. Waverly Magazine. Chimney Corner, Leslie's Illustrated News, Round Table, Wilkes' Spirit of the Times, Every Saturday, LiUell's Living Age, Godey's Magazine. Gal axy, Harpers Magazine. Our Young Folks. Atlantic Monthly, Old Guard, Yankee No lions, Ac., Ac. Srrn.EMT.vr WASTED. —The Look.- and ac counts of the lute firms of O. tttyuiycr ft. Hon and IS. M. Blymyer A Co.. are in the hands of .John F. Blymyer, and are open for settle ment. As the junior member of the firm in tends starting in business elsewhere, all ac counts must be settled by" cash or note on or before the 10th of January nex*. after which time all open accounts will be placed in the hands of an officer for collection. 1 his step is rendered necessary through his requiring money to enable him to begin business at his new location. It Six P"s —Poets—Painters -Preachers— Players—Printers and Politicians—all suffer from Dyspepsia. Nervousness, Loss of Appe tite, Liver Complaints and all diseases which they may cure or prevent by the use of Planta tion Bitters. If those sufferers took these Bitters, the Poetry would lie purer, the Pain tings grander, the Sermons livelier, the Ac ting truer, the Printing neater, and the Poli tics bonester. This splendid tonic invigora tes the system, and enables the brain to work healthily. Perhaps no article was ever so well endor sed by all who have used it. No TnoßoroHi'A RE. — lit/ Charles /Helens and Wilkie Collins. Boston: Tiekuor A Fields. —As an extra holiday number of " Every Saturday." Mers l ieknor A fields have issued the latest Chiistmas story of Charles Dickens, in the writing of which that great author has been assisted by Mr. Wilkie Collins. The s'ory is in admirable blending ->f the mark<-d peculiarities of the two writers. The majority of the charae'ers bear the im press of"Dic-kens' hand, while the leading in cidents of the plot, and the villain of the nar rative, bear umistakable evidences of Mr. Collins* power of depicting crime and crimi nals. "A JOKE." — We are not much given to '• poking fun " at or attempting to criticise the effusions of others. "We are too good natnred for that." and then our own, efforts, at times, are not altogber free from error. But then that poetry (?) over the signature of a no doubt would-be modern Cassius, in the last (lazette deserves a passing notice. In the first place it cannot, with propriety, be ranked as poetry, but merely as a motley jumbling together of bad English, stale sentiment and mis-quoted wit. In reading, it has effect on the car like the " mumbled jargon " of a modern "oyster man." which the three lengthy foot notes fail to make intelligible." On the whole, it is a vain and futile attempt at wit, and we would advise, " Cassius," to better study his role, for a terrible "rent' he hath made in modern poetry. LEAP YEAR. —With the advent, of LKFIS, comes Leap Year, and thus suggests to our minds, whether it would be proper to hap out of the frying pnn into the fire? \\ h thcr it is safe to ' ' leap in the dark? Whether it would 11 >t be well to " look before von leapt Whether it is politic to ""leap at a conclusion?" Whether it is etiquette for a young lady to leap into the arms o( a handsome dry-goods clerk, just because ••the cat scared her s<?" Whether it would be policy lor the said clerk to ''hap to the rear.' and not embrace the — opportunity? Whether it would be more than right if our young men were to—not leap— but just walk into the Ixqi'ißKK BOOK STORK and purchase a nice Christmas present for some "fair friend. ARTHUR'S HOME MAGAZINE. —The January number of "The Home Magazine," opens with the first of a new series of Temperance Stories by the author of "Ten Night* in a Bar Room," entitled '■'■ The Son of My Friend." This story exhibits, in a narrative of deep and painful interest, tbe evil of drinking at fash ionable parties. No one can read it without a profound impression of the social wrongin volved in the custom. Miss 'l'ownsend, al ways a favorite with the reading public, be gins a new serial in this number, entitled "The Holland*," which opens with a splen did promise of good things to come. Besides these, the number is crowded with good read ing for old and young. "The Home Magaziue" claims to be su perior to all its ootemporaries in the excel lence and interest of its reading matter: while in its fashion and household departments, everything iscoutaiued that an American wife and mother could desire in a periodical. Terms—.s2.(lo a year. 11 copies for $5. Tub lished by T. S. Arthur, Philadelphia. PERSONS desiring any of the leading Pcii odicals or Newspapers of the country can be supplied, at city retail prices, by leaving their orders at the INQUIRER BOOK STORE. tf. Thk Dijlmoko Diitiiis, — Little Dork it. —The eighth volume of the dainty little '"Di amond Edition " of Dickens is now out com pleting nearly two-thirds of the whole series. The same merits that we have admitted for the former volumes of this edition mark the present volume, namely, compactness, beau ty of typography, substantial paper, charac teristic illustrations, bandiness of size, ele gance of appearance and. remarkable cheap ness. It slips easily into an ordinary coat pocket, taking up but little space, whilst it is handsome enough, inside and out, for the li brary shelf or the parlor table.— Clcretand Herald. Tiik arrival of Dickens in this country to give readings from Ids works make it desira ble for all who hope to hear and thoroughly appreciate him. to be acquainted with his wonderful writings.
