North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Ore go*, California, at tto fairs of the American In stitute, Franklin lisUtutT, Maryland Institute, Massachusetts Mechanics' Association, Penn. Me chanics' Institute. St. Louis Agricultural and Me chauio*' Asooeion. and at nutucrons Institute and County fairs, includidg all the fairs at which t.Yey were exhibited the past thieeyear*. First prizes have also been awarded these Ma chines at the exhibitions of London, Paris, Dub lin, Lint. Pesancon, Bayonne, St. Dizier, Chak ns. And they have been furnished by special com- I uiand to the lißipres* or Frsuce, EmarsMi of Austria. Kwpmsef Russia. Emurewi of Bra ail, fiueen of Rpaln nod fiacen of Bavaria. The Grover and Baker Ela-itic-Stitch serving Machines are superior to all others for the follow, ing reasons : 1. They sew direct frwm the spools, and require no rewinding of thread. 2. They are more easily understood and used, ' aad lesr liable to derangement than other mi j chines. 3. They are capable of executing perfectly, without change of adjustment, a much greater variety of work than other machines. 4. The stitch made by these machines is much more firm, elastic, and durable, especially upon articles which require to be washed and ironed, than any other stitch. 5. This stitch, owing to the manner in which the under thread is inwrought, is much the most plump aad beautiful in us -, and retains this plumpness and beauty even upon articles frequent ly washed and ironed until they are worn out. 6. The structure of the seam is such that, though it be cut or broken at intervals of only a few stitches, it will neither open, run, or ravel, but remains firm and durable. 7. Unlike other machines, these fasten betk ends of the seam by their own operation. 8. With these machines, while silk is used upon the right or face side of the seam, cotton may be used upon the other side without lessening the strength or durability of the seam. This can be dene on other machine, and is a great saving upon all articles stitched or made up with silk. These machines, in addition to their superior merits as instruments for sewing, by a change of adjustment, easily learned and practiced, execute the most beautiful and permanent embroidery and ornamental work. The author says,: "I design in this volume to record what that Army did and suffered in ten campaigns and two score battle*." "I shall have to celebrate the unswerving loy alty of this army, that oft times when the bond of military cohesion failed, held it, unshaken offer* tune, to a duty *elf imposed." "I shall have to follow.it through a checkered experience, in a tale commingled of great misfor tunes, great follies and great glorteqj but from first to last it will appear that, amid many buffets of fortune, throngh "winter and rough weather," the Army of the Potomac never gave up, but made a good fight, and finally reached the goal." The Army and Navy Journal says: "This is the only American critical work on the lute war, and it is thoroughly critical and entirely divfsted of all political hue or tone." This is th only history of the "Grand Army," and no one who has borne a part in its conflicts, or is interested in its grand achievements, should be without it. This work sells itself.
