Allow your flannel? to freeze after washing in winter: it bleaches them.— Country Gentlemen. HOW TO REPAIR A ROAD. The first requisite is to have a dry bed or the road. Without this, the superstructure, of whatever material it may be composed, will soon become rough and uneven. Some i soils are naturally drained, and the gravelly j subsoil thrown upon the surface and rounded i a Utile makes as good a path as need be. | Others need draining, and no amount of grav- j el upon the surface will make a good bed i without it. We frequently find bud places : upon a hi!l--ide where the water is always bursting out in rainy seasons. A three inch tile drain four feet deep just above these wet places would make them dry up pi rnianently. and save a l&nge expenditure every year. If tiles are not available; stones or v uod should be used. There is no help for 'hese mud holes but in draining the bed. A single dol lar spent at the bottom is worth ten at the top in gravel. Roads are so cousin tly in use and the prosperity --f the farmer s > much de pends upon them, that no pain? should be spared to ba* e them of easy g nde and as smooth a- possible. All classes io ihe com munity are benefited by good roads, but the farmer most. All bis surplus crops must go over the road to market, and it makes a great difference with him in the course of the year, whether he be able to take a ton and a half at a load, or only half that quantity. Good roads add to the value of every acre he owns and of every thing that he produces to say nothing .t their influence upon bi manhood. They are a mark of the progress of civiliza tion, and a pret'y good index of the moral culture of a team stuck in the mud. the snapping of whiffle trees and braces, 'he cur?ing and bad temper of the driver tthow that ''there is somethinff rotten in Den mark. ' The mud holes on the highway undo tbe work of the schi 01-house and the church. There is an intimate connexion between the highways and the moral ways of a people. In mending either it is a very safe maxim to "begin at the bottom." —-Inter. Agri. WILD PEPPEKMUTT AS A RAT EXTEHMIVA TO.—AIex. Robertson writes to the Canada Farmer —"l have for the last four year* prov ed to my satisfaction that tbe 'Wjid Pepner minF is a sure and reliable exterminator of rats. In proof of tbe fact, I will state the result it has had with me. Four years ago my barn was regularly infested with rats; they were so numerous that I had great fears of riiY whole grain being destroyed bv theui after ic'waa housed, but having about two acres of Wild Peppermint thut grew in a field of wheat, after the wheat was harvested the mint was cut audbound with it, and drove tbe rats from my premises. I have not been troubled with one since, nor am I at present, while my neighbors have any quantity of them. 1 feel confident that any person who is troubled with these pests, could easily get rid of them by gathering a good supply of the mint and placing it around the walls or bas.; of their barns." RICE. —As an article of food, rice has nev er been as popular in Europe as in Asia, al though large quantities are consumed there among the middling classes. The poor in Europe almost iuv-,.riably reject it whoever they can obtain a sub-titute. and the potato is much preferred among all tbe laboring .'lasses. This is not a little singular, since it is well known that a pound of rice properly cooked will yield more than a pound .of nu tritive food, and i; is at once cheaper and more wholesome than any of tbe roots or grain which may be used in preference.
