John Cessna writes from Chamberaburg. Jan. 17th, that the borough has a credit of ten over its quoa on the five hundred thousand call of last August. If this credit is al lowed on the last call it will leave our quota of men to be raised, at from ten to fifteen. Is it too early to begin a movement to fill this quota ? The men can probably be raised now tor a local bounty of three hundred dollars, and the Government bounty of one hundred dollars. Huntingdon borough pays a boun ty of three hundred dollars, and is rapidly filling up its quota. Who will move in the matter ? MORE OIL DISCOVERIES. —OiI has been found on the "North Fork Branch" of the Red Bank, in Jef ferson county Pa., and the indication are such as to warrant the immediate commencement of boring. These indications have been observed for a number of years, but from some cause no attention was given to the mader until quite recently. The oil is found to ooze out upon the snow in such quantities as to color it, and many other facts it is said, lead to the belief t'aat oil will soon be taken from the ground in large quantities. Goodjudges pronounce it the best 'oil indications" on the surface yet discovered— Tnese indications are found on the property of A. "S. Rhines, who owns about four hundred acres along •the stream. The Rebel General Early having sent the greater part of his force from our front, and the bad condition of the roads which rendered the movement of either army impossible, made it un necessary to keep so large a force with Sheridan. Accordingly under orders from Gen. Grant we were sent here, and now occupy a position near the extreme left of the line on the Weldon R. R. Our Regiment is for tha present detached from the main line, occupying the front works, and are now doing garrison duty at Fort Dushane a very strong earth work surrounded by a wide and deep ditch, and abattis, which it would be almost madness for an enemy to attempt to get over. It has embrasures for the mounting of eight guns but at present only one battery of four field pieces are in it. It is also provided with a bombproof and magazines in which is stored enough ammunition to stand a regular siege. This is only the continuation of a number of strong forts and earthworks which protect the flank and rear, and prevent the possi bility of a flank movement by the enemy. Brig. Gen. Truman Seymour of Florida renown, is in command of our Division (3d Div. 6th A. C.) having been assigned to it in October when Gen. Ilicketts was wounded. THOMAS B. FLORENCE, FROM THE HON. THOMAS B. FLORENCE; Washington, January 1,1864. Gentlemen. —Having stated it verbally to you, I have no hesitation, in writing the fact, that I experienced mark ed benefit from your Hcofiand's German Bitters. During a long and tedious session of Congress, pressing and oner ous duties nearly prostrated me. A kind friend suggest ed the use of the preparation I have named. I took his advice, and the result was improvement of health, renew ed energy, and that particular relief I so much needed and obtained. Others may be similarly advantaged if they desire to be. Truly your friend, Thomas B. Flobkscb. Frym John B. Wickevsham, Esq., firm of Wiekersham A Hutchison, the celebrated Manufacturers of Fancy- Iron Works, 259 Canal St. Lan the recipient from yoa of one of the greatest fa vors that can be conferred upon man, vir: that of health. For many years have I suffered from one of the most an noying and debilitating complaints that the human fami ly ean be afflicted with. Chronic Diarrhea. During the long time I was suffering from this disease, I was attended by regular physicians, giving me but tem porary relief. The cause seemed to remain until I was induced to try Hoofiand's German Bitters. After the use of a few bottles of that valuable medicine, the complaint appeared to be completely eradicated. I often inwardly thank you for such a valuable specific and, whenever I have an opportunity, cheerfully recom mend it, with full confidence in its reliability. Truly yours, Jons B. WICK ERSHAM.. New York, Feb. 2,1864. From Julius Lee, Esq., firm of Lee A Walker, the most extensive Music Publishers in the United States, No. 722 Chestnut Street- Philadelphia. February 8 th, 1864. Messrs. Jones A Evans—Gentleman:—My mother-in law has been so greatly benefitted by yourHoofiand's Ger man Bitters that I concluded to try it myself. I findit to be an invaluable tonia, and unhesitatingly recommend it to all who are suffering from dyspepsia. I have had that disease in its most obstinate form—flatulence—for many years, and your Bitters has given me ease when every thing else had failed. Yours truly, Jcutt LEE. From the Hon. JACOB BROOM, Philadelphia, Oct. 7th, 1863. Gentlemen : In reply to your inquiry as to the effect produced by the use of Hoofiand's German Bitters, in my family, I have no hesitatien in saying that it has been highly beneficial. In one instance, a case of dyspepsia of thirteen years' standing, and which had become very dis tressing, the use of one bottle gave decided relief, the sec ond affecting a cure, and the third, it seems, has confirmed the cure, for there has been no symptoms of its return for the last six years. In my individual use of it 1 find it o be an unequalled tonic, and sircerely recommend its me to the sufferers. Truly yours, JACOB BROOM, 1707 Spruce St. Rev. W. D. Seigfried, Pastor of 12th Baptist Church, Philadelphia, December 26tb, 1863. Messrs. Jones A Evans—Gentlemen: J I have recently been laboring under the distressing effects of indigestion, ! accompanied by a prostration of the nervns system, numerous remedies were recommended by riends, and some of them tested, but without relief. Your Hoofiand's German Bitters were recommended by persons who had tried them, and whose favorable mention of the Bitten induced me also to try them. I must confess that I hail an aversion to Patent Medicines, from the "thousand and one" quack "Bitters" whose only aim seems to be to palm off sweetened and drugged liquor upon the community, in a sly way; and the tendency of whioh, I fear, Is to make many a confirmed drunkard. Upon learning that yours was really a medicine preparation, I took it with happy effect. Its action was not upon only the stomach, but upon the nervous system, was prompt and gratifying. I feel that I have eat and permanent benefitfrom the use of a few bottles. Very respectfully y § t, W.T). SEIGFRIED. No. 254 Shackamaxon St. From the Rev. Thos. Wiute-, D.
