W. Ht;pp, ) ) GEO. BLYMYRE, > ALEX KING, )• Secretaries. } President ) THE ELECTION OF TUESDAY. —We give all the elec tion returns of Bedford County received up to Thurs day morning. There is not much doubt, but that the amendments have been carried in this county by a handsome majority. The peace democrats and al lies of the Rebels openly opposed the amendments. Men professing to be honest, and who claim to pos sess average inteligence opposed the amendment on the ground that their passage would confer the right of suffrage on the negro. Many were decieved by such misrepresentations into voting against the amendments. Reckless disregard of truth is the only stock iti trade of modern democrats. It shows their rottenness and want of principle. We think the re sult of the election on Tuesday will everywhere be regarded asa true indication of the downfall and ut ter rout of the spurious de mocraey. Maj'y for the Maj'y against the Amendment. E. Church held their anual Celebration in the grove, belonging to Hon. Job Mann. The school numbers over two hundred scholars. The exercises at the grove were highly entertaining. Speehes'dialogues, music and refresh ments. Among the many interesting exercises on the occasion we notice an address by Master Vinton Shuck on encouragement to S. S. teachers, address by MasterjDaniel Croaso. Speech 'by Master John Jordan. Dialogue on laughing by four serious young ladies! Gov. Curtin was present in company with Ex-Gov. Bareley of Indiana during the festivi ties. and made a few appropriate remarks. He urged the school to the "love of country", Refer red to the "symbols of liberty which floated hill"' twelve large American (lags were planted around it. He spoke of the "Treason that would tare it down and trample it in the dust as being from perdi tion aud that it be driven back to its oyr, native hell to which there were responses of hearty Yiature indi cating the spirit that prevailed. The School gave three cheers for Gov. Curtin and three for the Union. Ex-Gov Bradley of Ind. made a neat and beautiful speech to the children—after the exercises were over at this stand the scholars were to enjoy themselves until dinner was ready— bnt soon the Committee of arrangements loaded the table with the substantials prepared by ibe patrons of the school. The children were first, and then the older folks, there was an abundance, all having satisfied the inner man they dispersed to enjoy them selves, thus the day passed delightfully away and a iaorc lovely day could not hafe desired. A fine breeze from the south west made the grove refrsh ingly pleasant. Ihe martial music from the town and a oornet band from the springs accompanied the procession. Between four and five hundred persons mingled in the festivics * * DURING the past few days, there has been much tiara felt here on account of tjje rumors of the ap proach of armed rebels in our midst. Scouts have wen patroling the country in the direction of Mc 'onnellsburg and south toward the Maryland line.— to rebel troops have been discovered nearer to Bed ord. than those driven through M'Connelleburg by Gerill. A few persons io this place packed up otne ot their goods, in expectation of a visit from be rebels. The fortunafc; appearance of AveriU's fairy on the scene of action at Chambersburg, no iubt saved us from the atrocities committed on that I-fated place. It is now very clear that Bedford >unty was included within the range of their Intend -1 operations. It is now coming out, that there have ■•'n numerous rebel spies in our county within a ■w weeks past. Although we are now saved from horrors of war, we may sooner or later be called upon to meet sin armed enemy in our midst. tjfwould be hut the part of prudence to make timely paratious to withstand the foe, should he make appearance. I?oa THE DEFENCE OF RF.DFORD COC.VTY. —Tjie ca lities of our neighbors caused by the rebel inva ■, and the certainty that the same fate was inten i for us, has opened our eyes to our defenceless lation. A hundred rebel cavalry could sweep ough this county in any direction, burning and troying without meeting the slightest oppositian. is defenceless and exposed condition is leaving effort in organizing for the defence of this county, ready three companies are forming in this Boro. CURTIS left Springs Friday evening 11 o'clock forUprrUqurg. The new raid into Penn lvania was the cause of.hie sudden return to the apitol. The Governor rode on a locomotive over tips Hroad Top R. R. to Huntingdon, where he took a special train for Harrisbarp. He arrived there at ten o'clock Saturday morning, THE SUNDAY SCHOOL PROCESSION passing down Julianna street, suggested beautiful and inspir ing emotions. The little children, the young misses, the martial music, the emblems of Unicn and Liber ty : all was a sight to swell the heart with noble as pirations. CHICKEN THIEVES are about. Ten were stolen a few evenings since from the chicken cot of the Rev. Mr, Kirby. They should be looked after —the chickens and the thieves. THE Government is taking an interest in rebel movements in this county. COL. FRANCIS R. JORDAN has been in town dur ing the week. He arrived Monday evening. James Buchanan left Bedford Springs Thursday the 4th iasL STATEMENT OF COLONEL M'CLCRR CiiAM B ERSBL'UI 1 , August 2. —The malignity of j the New York TrCynte is most amazing to Guy | people, who have ejV-r Bed a rijady to do any possj i ble thing for their own defence.' Geqts. McCausland and Johnson had three thou sand men here; two batteries planted to command the town and protect the five hundred who plun dered and burned Chambersburg.—General Couch had just forty men within reach of Chambersburg subject to his otders, his new traps having been sent to Washington. Averiil was under orders from Hunter, and although urged by Gen. Couch to fall back from Greeucastle to cover Chambers burg; was unable to do so in time. I speak from personal knowledge as to the dis position of our people to defend themselves', had it been possible, and Generel Couch would have called on them could he have hoped to Bave the town. Our loss is over two millions ; nearly three thousand people are homeless, and every way helpless, but we are cheered by generous friends on almost every side. We can dispense with the charity of the Tribune, but it should at least be just. If we had been favored with half the troops sent from the Army of the Potomac to protect the Tribune (a million people from a thousand or so of a mob), Cnambersburg would not be in rains.— Our, people refused tribute, preferring the torch. No sort o + ' effort was made to compromise or raise a dollar for the rebels. A. K. MCCLU&E. A CARD.
