attrn j > For the Bedford Inquirer. Farming Hints Tor the Season. Farmers are uow making jveperatinn to put in their crops. The ground should bo well and deeply plowed, to secure a good h--d for the spreading of tho roots of plants. We often see fariuets plow their laud iu such a careless rmnner, not plowing more than three or four inches deep, that vre cannot see how tliey can produce an j thing at ail. "What i* worth do ing at all. is worth doing well" and an addi tional day in doing work well, urny secure an additional wagou load of product. Avoid hasty aud superficial plowing, but cut straight, deep, and narrow furrows. MANURE.—Have you any manure to apply 1 then draw it out and thoroughly mix it with your soil, and this will render it of double value. Coax.—Fit-pare your corn ground well, make it mellow by harrowing end cultivating seve ral limes; do uot Le afraid of losing u few days time at this, it will repay you well; coin spreads its roots very much, if iLu soil is mellow, and this it, ceiiuot do it tie soibis hard. See that your seed corn is good by sprouting soma in a pet in your window or some other warm place. This may save one or two replanting®, aud se cure your corn trow oaily f.ili frosts. Piaut pleuty of seeds, and thin out evenly, and thus avoid the loss cf a third of the crop, missing and uneven hills. THE KITCHEN GAUPEN. — Also will require your attention at this season, and see that it is well cared for; for a good vegetable garden w ill Le the source of many u good dinner. Do not, from a mistaken notion of economy, that it will not pay for you to spend a few hcur3 for seve ral days during the season, iu the garden, com pelj your wife to dig the garden while the work properly belongs to you, 1 ao not say you shon'd do all the work iu the garden. I believe it is quite congenial to the naiure of the ladies to plant and t.-ke care cf ;ceds and plants, but it is your duty to assist ihem at least iu the rougher part of the w rk. While yon are at it do tie work well, specie it Jeep aud make the soil fiuc and mellow break all the iumps with the spade, aud intermix with the soil a full supply of wtl! rotted manure or vegetable compost BKL'iT GARDEN. —Make a fruit garden, and plaut a full supply of strawberries, raspberries blackberries, &3. S. B. K. Near Woodbury, IV POTATOES WITH CORN .—A .. p. ndent of the Ohio Fa?;.i:r gives trie following m his x petience iu phntiag Cora sni l'otitoes in the soma hill. Having never seen an account iu any agri cultural paper, of any one having raised pota toes with com in the same hill, I thought I would try the experiment last spring. 1 had finished the potatoes that 1 iuteuded to plaut but having some small cues left, I concluded to plant tbem iu the samo hills with a patch of corn, and mark tho effect. 1 planted the coin upon the 25:h of May, the season being sc wet 1 could not plaut tbem sooner. 1 dropped the corn aud potatoes together, hoed them at the same time, and dug the potatoes soon after cut ting up the corn. The ground was not first rate, but the corn was an average crop, full as good as some near by where the corn was plant ed alone. The potatoes were first rate—never saw finer. 1 shall try again this spriDg, and if they do as last year, 1 shail contiuue to phut them together. I. the two crops do as well to gether as separate, it nukes a great saving of labor to plaut tbcm together. T WATERMELON CULTURE. —Mr. James U. Hopkins, of Oneida county, X. Y. iu the Coun try Gentleman, mikes the annexed i>uggestioti3 relative to the culture of the wateriuelou, and tbey are worthy of all consideration. Mr Uop kins sayß. There Hre few people that do Dot like water melons: yet we find lew of our farmers who grow them with uny degree of success in their gardens. I started my seeds in a hot-bed; set theui out in a hill dug deep and large, made rich aud mellow with gaud. There aic three (Lings to bo observed and requisite to success iu growing watermelous. Fir*t, early planting—the hot-bed will help us when the season is late. Second, a deep, rich, well prepared soil. Third, it. must Lc sandy, naturally or artificially. Unserve these three icquisites, and, with proper cue, success is al ways sure. lo illustrate the necessity for a deep, mellow, well-prepared soil, 1 will meutiou thai 1 measuied roots from u hill of Watermel ons last autumn which were over niuo feet in length. .brother Jouatuau says, "The English ladies who reeenily lost their lives by their dresses taking fire, were buiul-offertugs to the Moloch of Fashion/' A gentleman who died receutly bequeathed to his wile a handsome sum; providing iu Lis will that iu case she again married the sum was to be doubled !
