AGRICULTURAL. _| From the American Jtgriculturist. The Chinese Caue for Sweetening. Tbe present and prospcc'ive Ligli prices of a!] grades of sugar will render it an object for | those who have the Chinese Sugar Caue grow- j ing in quantity, to turn it to accouut in the j manufacture of syrup. Tbe still imperfect de- ; velopment of processes for manufacturing s>u- ! gar froui the juice, will prevent much being dotoe in that line, the present season at least. ; We still hope that eveu during this year the • experiments to be made will go fur lo establish some convenient and profitable mode of obtain- j ing the dry sugar itself. But whether this be the case or not, we have proved by our own ex periments, last year, if he had not had hun dreds of confirmatory evidences, that the juice may he converted into a cheap palatable syrup. As stated in a former number, we obtaiucd , about 100 gallons of syrup from half an acre, • though the imperfection in the manufacture rendered the larger portion of it of poor qual ity. The same processes which made even a small portion of it an excellent syrup, would j have rendered the whole so, if they had been | kn-'wn and adopted in season. The articles we published last Fail and Win- i ter perhaps indicated clearly enough what arc j the main requisites for producing good svvup, | but e will add a hint or two now. I. Some kind of mill or rollers will be need- ' for pressing out the jn'ce thoroughly. Whcth- i er the mill to large or small, of wood or iron, , will depend upon the of material to Le > pressed, and the convenience of obtaining such | a mill as may be desired. We think iron rol- ( Icrs are by f.*r tbe best, unless fur the smallest j experiments, when home-made wooden rollers I may le used 2- The aane should be cut as soon ascouvo nir'. after tire sued pulp enters the ripening or l.urd doughy stale. It ulioulJ be cut no fst;r than pressed or i oiled. The cutting may be i continued until after sufhoieni freezing and thawing takes place to dightly sour the juice. 3. The boiling should be commenced as soon the juice to expressed. 4. Tbe boiling down should he done in shal low vessels, with the Cre touching only tlio bot tom, for in no case, and at no stage of the boil nig, chould the fire on the ou side of tlm ves sel be allowed to come up as i.igb a3 the suf fice of the liquid wit urn. 5. The boiling should be as brisk as possi- Ve, until tbo syrup ir so thick us to be in duD ger of burning, when the heat -hould be re dwood. Thteo or or four hours nt most is all the time that should ordinarily be taken to re duce the juice to a moderate thick ?y rup. 6. In a majority of cases reported, the best results have been obtaiucd by addiug nothing io the juice, but boiling rapidly in vessels of a few iuohes in depth, and simply removing the rising scum entirely from the surface. (The may ha tinned to good account for vinegar, by simply pulling them in bar rels with some water, and leaving them to 60ur.) The exceptions to tLis last rule arc, that when the canes are long ri|>ened, or subject to freezing and thawing, or when the boiling is long continued, it is well to add a little soda or Hme, to neutralize auy acid ioruic l. The same will be the case when the juice has stood long after expressing it, before brisk boiling has been secured. Suocld Droxf.s re Killed? — Mr. J. K., of Bedford Co., Fa., asks : "What tluok you of the practice of killiug the drones in the bee hive? They are very numerous at this time of tbo year, and consume much honey. Will their destruction injure the swarm'" Wc submitted the above questions to Mr. Quinby, lo which be replies as follows. It is now admitted that the drones are the males among bees. Nature has so arranged it, that sexual intercourse takes place iu the air. The excursions made by tbe queen for that pur pose. are attcuJed with much peril. To pre vtni failures as much as possible, a large num ber of ni iles (drones) are provided, and multi tudes of them are on the wing soou after the middle uf each tair day. Nature provided dones enough for is- lated colonies. When sev eral hives, or stocks are brought together, the iostiuet that reared drones enough for one, is retained, and each coloDy provides the usual nuinbet, while one or two stocks might produce nearly enough. When a great number of stocks are in company, toe cbauces of the queen being lost by entering the wrong hive after hor excur sion are greatly multiplied; perhaps a few more drones than one or two colonics would produce nnght bo expedient to make her success as cer tain as possible. \ot when a large number of stocks are together, a majority of the drones may be destroyed to advantage, and thus save a'l tl.e hoi.ry they would consume. Unless the w -iter arr very uiuch redu-ed, the drones can be of I.a US. f.. w wicks after swarming i? over. A bett-r w.,y, where one has tfc moves- W tra iwrs, w iuld U- to remove nearly all of 'he dune cells in the F'princ, and substitute wrikerccTfs insiqgd, fhireby preventing the i .Curing -of tbe -drcue*.— lb.
