On the night of December Ist, Joseph
Ellictt, it coal miner, committed suicide
at Coalbury, a few miles from Youtupt;
town, by hanging himself to a tree. He
was to I soon after by Lis son, but life
WWI extinct. Ile had been drinking to
excess the 'Week previous, but yesterday
the saloons refused him liquor, which,
it is thought, caused him to do the deed.

.Iluteectstlng Horse Case.—Quite
an interesting horse case was up before
arbitrators in Beaver last weak, and on
the result of which considerable interest
was felt. Tho main facts in the case
were as follows: A horse was sold to
Mr. Richard Walton ofledustry twp.,
by Mr. Jason Richardson of Deaver;
sometime in February 1870, for thesum
Of ono hundred and seventy-five dollars,
for Which a protnisury notowas given by
Mr, Walton, payable on the Ist of April,
same year. This. suit- was breUght to
recover' the amount called for on the note.
The defonsiantellegal fraud in the sale,
to wit: That , td•iierso was unsound,
having been represented as sound. The
matter was left to the following arbitra
tors, viz: John A. Frazier; Robert Ta
lon and Joseph Brittain, who commenc
ed hearing the evidence on Thursday
morning, December Ist, and continued
taking_ testimony In the - case until Also
Friday afternoon following. Some fitly
witnesses were examined. E. P. Kuhn,
(eq., represented the plaintiff and B. D.
Wilson, Frank Wilson and John Wick
ham, cups., represented the dell:lndent.
The attorneys argued tho case on Friday
evening, Vet which the arbitrators re
tired and after a short absence returned
a verdict In favor of the plaintiff for the
amount claimed.

Fatal .Aeeldeut.--0n Wednesday
evening last, Coroner Barker was sum
moned to the home of John •Springer; a
ficorman;_witciieeidad In Shebang° Imp.,
Lawrence county, to hold an inquest. It
seems that on the afternoon of thit day,
Mr. Springer was felling a tree near his
house. Toward evening his wifo went
to whore ho was at work, and he com
plained of feeling tired. She desired blot
to go into the house, and he replied he
would be In In a few minutes. no did
not come, however, and soon after she
went to call him, and !bend him 'dead
under a tree which`had fallen on him.
It seems that the tree had fallen In a dif
ferent direction trout what ho supposed
it Would. It is thought hostarted to run,
but took thci wrong direction. Ho was
about- twenty feet from the butt of the
tree when found. The tree had struck
his head.when falling. crushing him to
ground, and then fell upon his legs, boys
of which were broken. An inquest was
held and a verdict rendered In accord
ance with the above facts. Mr. Springer
was about fifty years old and leaves a
wife but no children. • .
