SERRE "Bellefonte, Pa., June 26, 1925. HISTORIC CLARK'S FERRY BRIDGE BEING TORN DOWN. New Structure Will Span Susquehan- na on Williamsport Division—Re- called by Charles Dickens. The State will in a few weeks lose one of the most picturesque pieces of scenery along its right of way, with the replacement of Historic Clark’s Ferry bridge, by a new concrete struc- ture. The old wooden bridge which spans the Susquehanna river at Clark’s Ferry, is said to be the longest covered wooden bridge in the world. However, its days of usefulness are over and the razing of the structure will soon begin. The present wooden bridge is the last of three which have spanned the river at this point. The first being built in 1833, and is mentioned by Charles Dickens in his “American Notes.” The English author, then making a tour of this country, was on his way from Washington to Pitts- burgh, when he saw the structure. He said it was an extraordinary wooden bridge with two galleries, one above the other. Remains of such galleries still are visible on the present bridge which was built in 1850. One gallery was used for eastbound traffic and the other for westbound. It was at this point that the boats crossed the river, being locked out of one canal into another on the opposite side of the channel. The bridge is 2088 feet long and contains more than one million board feet of choice white pine. It is said that to obtain this lumber more than fifty acres of original white pine tim- ber was cut. It is presumed that this timber, was cut in the territory now served by the Williamsport Division, at that time served by the canal. The bridge is divided into ten spans, nine of which are 212 feet long and one 180 feet in length. It was owned until 1915 by the Pennsylvania Canal company. That year it was sold for $4,500 to the pres- ent owners who are erecting the new concrete structure which will cost ap- proximately $700,000. Pass Million in State Auto Tags. Registrations of passenger automo- biles for 1925 in Pennsylvania have passed the million mark. The automobile division of the State Highway Department reported that the registrations for the first five months of this year have been 1,001,- 731 passenger cars and 116,151 trucks. In 1924, the millionth license plate was not issued until August 15, or two and one-half months later than this year. The total number of passenger licenses issued in five months of this year is only 150,000 lower than the to- tal for twelve months last year; for by the end of December approximately 1,150,000 passenger cars had been li- censed. In comparison with the 1,001,731 passenger cars licensed by June 1 this year, only 892,629 passenger cars had been licensed by June 1, 1924. In comparison with the 116,151 motor trucks licensed in five months this year, 151,897 had been licensed in the similar period of last year. .\-Although the number of passenger registrations has run into seven fig- ures, no license plates containing sev- en numerals are being issued. As was the practice last year, “A” repre- sents the first million. The tag issued when the latest of the 1,001,731 cars were registered, was “A 1-731.” ——1If it’s readable, it is here. . eo Mercantile Appraisement.
